Revue de presse

"Well-written (nothing is redundant), well-researched, and extremely readable, Robert Mullen has a rare gift for . . . conveying essential information about foreign terms and concepts without being either pedantic or condescending." --Alison Raju, author, The Way of St. James: Pyrenees-Santiago-Finistere

"Mullen brings a lovely blend of humour that always feels relevant and authentic . . . the Call of the Camino . . . might be the most important wake-up call of your life." --John Brierley, author, The Camino Guides

Présentation de l'éditeur

Call of the Camino commences as an account of a walk along the Camino Frances from the French town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, at the foot of the Pyrenees, to the shrine of Saint James at Santiago de Compostela and then on to Finisterre, the westernmost point of Spain. Something of the history of the Camino is recounted, as well as various of the myths, legends, and miracle stories which have over time become attached to the Camino and which have since the Middle Ages given special meaning to this itinerary. The creation of Camino lore, however, is by no means at an end. The next strand to be woven into this work is an examination of the personal myths - the stories which we tell ourselves about ourselves - and the processes through which present-day pilgrims on the Camino may come to rewriteA" those stories. All manner of pilgrims, from all corners of the world, and for a great diversity of reasons, continue to be drawn to the Camino. The miracleA" associated with today's Camino, for the author of this book, is how many of today's post-modern pilgrims, whatever their backgrounds or expectations, will come to consider the pilgrimage afterwards as having been one of the defining experiences of their lives.

If you are looking for a spiritual and inspiring book on the Camino de Santiago, avoid this book like the plague.

The author's primary purpose seems to be to belittle every legend and traditional he encounters along the way, while simultaneously dishing the dirt on the people he meets. Did they sign up to have their souls exposed to the world, or did "Bob" just feel entitled to do so because he's a writer?

There is nothing about the Camino as a faith journey for this writer, he appears to take great pleasure in putting down the faith of others yet never has the courage to state in clear language what his own beliefs might be.

The subtitle of the book is "Myths and Legends and Pilgrim Stories on the Way to Santiago de Campostela." The author tries to show why every myth is a lie, and goes on and on at the start of every chapter babbling about what is myth and why they exist. Why do the "myths" of the Camino exist? Well, for Bob to rip them apart, of course!

I am sorry I wasted my time and money on this book, as it is one of the most mean-spirited things I've come across in a long time.

The author did a good job when he wrote about the journey and the people that he met on the way, but his attempts to be philosophical and interpret the experience in a spiritual sense fell woefully short. I also thought politics aside that it was strange that when he was asked where he was from he said Scotland. My father is Basque, I lived in Scotland and Panama for years but I am from the USA and I would tell anyone that I live in ........................ but I am from or was born in the USA. It was almost like he is ashamed to be born in American.
I would not recommend this book to anyone. My wife and I plan to walk the Camino and I read this book first hoping for much more based on the other reviews. I won't recommend my wife waste her time on it. I plan to buy the book written by the man who walked the Camino without people knowing he was a Catholic priest. Hopefully the reviews will be correct on this one.

HASH(0x91a37390) étoiles sur 5 There are much better books about the Camino out there 26 mai 2012

I just finished this book, or should I say I just finished reading the book. Blah blah blah blah blah.......When I say finished reading it, I mean I gave it back. The writing seems to lose the reader? Yes there are decent parts, but it doesn't seem to come together for my liking. I have read about 6 books on the Camino as I hope to make that quest this year and I just could not follow this book. Maybe there is a cultual difference in how it was written, but I found myself trying to understand what points the author was trying to make. His writing is ambigous. I would pass on this book or should I say I did pass on this book after reading 1/2 of it.

The book was great for me having done "the way" myself.

A good read for both the "thinking about it" and the "done it" pilgrim.

Thank you!!!

For travelers, armchair adventurers, and anyone who enjoys a good old-fashioned quest, this is a terrific read about hiking an ancient pilgrimage trail through the Pyrenees. Like Thoreau and Bruce Chatwin, Mullen is the kind of traveler who is intrigued by the transformation that overtakes anyone who sets out on a deliberate spiritual journey. And, like these writers, he has the skill to take us with him, knowing where we need to rest and where we need to pick up the trail again.
