Présentation de l'éditeur

With amazing low-light capabilities, incredible definition, intelligent autofocus and a host of other features, digital cameras have now become so powerful that they have left their users behind. Most photographers can take competent shots in a range of conditions, or fix imperfect exposures in Photoshop or Lightroom, but very few have the skill to push their cameras to the limit and capture the perfect shot, under all conditions, with no post-processing required.

In Camera is the perfect way to take your photography to that level; to master your camera, understand light, exposure and composition, and make amazing photographs, whatever your camera, without cheating after
the event. One hundred of Gordon's beautiful photos are given his own expert commentary; full settings and camera details are included, and a host of tips and tricks let photographers of any level learn something from every example. The shots are taken with a wide range of cameras, and the emphasis is on getting results by improving your own skills, not wasting money on expensive equipment.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Features like in-camera raw processing 13 avril 2017
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
Mr. Laing shows how you can make use of the advanced features of recent enthusiast cameras to do what use to require a computer. Features like in-camera raw processing, HDR, and shooting B&W with a filter effect while retaining the ability to have a color version, long exposure times using your cell phone, etc. This book could be subtitled long exposure photography. Mr. Laing favors shots with the sky and a body of water (even a puddle can help a picture) but he likes to smooth both out for an ethereal effect. Long exposures accomplish that in camera. All the details you need to know are provided in the discussion of each photo. It is also a travel photography and you will see a large sample of interesting places in Europe and major US cities (I forgot the Slot Canyon in Arizona).
The EXIF data for each picture is the upper left. Up front, there is a thumbnail picture index.
Most pictures were shot with a wide-angle lens. I guess it helps to get in close in front of tourists and passing vehicles and other unwanted details.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 There are lots of good technical resources available for photographers and plenty of books ... 13 avril 2017

There are lots of good technical resources available for photographers and plenty of books filled with pretty pictures meant to inspire us, but until Gordon's "In Camera" book, I hadn't found one that appeals to both my technical and my artistic side.

The presentation here is simple yet brilliant: The technical data, the how-to info, and the story behind the photos are laid out on one page while the photo itself lives on the opposite page. Left brain, right brain. Perfect.

The message about getting things right in camera really resonates with me. My work requires me to stare at a computer monitor most of the day, and the last thing I want to do after venturing out to make pictures is to come back home and spend even more time editing. Gordon's assertion that it is often possible to avoid that extensive post-processing workflow is affirming and liberating.

One thing that always bothers me about gear reviewers is that they are full of opinions (which we are expected to accept as credible) but we rarely get to see their work as photographers, or their reviews are accompanied by ho-hum, lackluster, gratuitous images (often with an apology for the mediocre quality of the shots!). In contrast, the pictures in this book are truly lovely and very inspiring. It's a treat to see Gordon's artistic vision presented after enjoying and relying upon his technical reviews for so long.

One last thing: This is a really high quality book, so if like me you're the sort who appreciates heavy paper, good binding, and well executed layout and presentation, you'll appreciate that aspect of it as well.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent set of stories and photographs from around the world, with a little instruction too! 29 mai 2017
Par Mark Wyman - Publié sur
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
This is a fantastic book about a very important topic: Allowing ourselves to get back to the basics with photography so that we can get back to the _enjoyment_ of photography! 20-25 years ago, Photo editing software was expensive that people actually took college classes to master. Now that the software is so accessible, it has become almost expected that we are to edit our photographs after the fact. An unintended result of that, in my opinion, is that we have allowed ourselves to take mediocre photographs with the camera with the expectation that we can fix everything later on the computer.

But you know what? That gets very tiring, especially if photography is a hobby and a way of making wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. And to that end, Gordon Laing has done a wonderful job demonstrating that we have excellent tools at our disposal that have the complete capability to capture these images, in camera, without having to spen the time later working them up. They are immediate, available for sharing, and very fulfilling when we can snap a shot and know it is excellent. Right away.

But all that aside, what I really enjoyed about the book is that it is full of great stories along with great photos. It is not snapshots from around his house or neighborhood, but instead it is windows to the beauty that exists from around the globe! From wild bears in the beginning to NYC and Paris.... it is a fantastic read as a result of the stories and images, with some good instruction built in that, page by page, supports his hypothesis completely.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Tasty Cookbook of modern photography techniques, without the snobbery 6 avril 2017
Par Dennis H Linden - Publié sur

It's a perfect cookbook for modern photographers more interested in getting good, memorable photos of their lives and travels. It demonstrates that smaller sensor cameras are also perfectly capable of producing images that make it in print, including some double paged spreads. If Gordon has any spare time, I see a "field notes" companion for this book as a good thing to have with you on your next vacation.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Book if you want to get a better understanding of how to adjust your camera's setting to get the pictures you want. 7 mai 2017

This is probably the best book I have purchased to give me a better understanding of how to use the settings on my camera. I like the single image format. You look at the picture and and reference the settings Gordon gives you. You start to get a much better understanding of how the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect your shot. Gordon's short stories about each picture adds to your understanding, besides being entertaining. I spend time looking at each picture and looking at the setting and it starts to sink in what I need to do to my photographs to get the image I want to achieve. It is very easy to go back and take a quick look to refresh your memory. I like that each picture is independent of each other. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
