I got this book on sale but even at full price it is a great value. Quick, easy read but very through. I particularly like the sections on how to choose quality children's literature, in-depth explanations of teaching phonics and how to find learning opportunities in everyday activities. It is so true that the best academy is a mother's knee. On a personal note- we've found in our house that we get a LOT more story time in (especially with multiple children and a super active 2 year old) when we read at breakfast, snacks, and lunch. Chewing mouths make for an excellent, captive audience.

I have started teaching my child to read. While I understand what components are needed I still needed some guidance. I am very pleased to have found this book. I really enjoy that the author has broken down an explanation sounds for us along with all of her advice. blends, phonemes, rimes, etc. I love that the author has experience as a teacher but understands as a parent that we as parents are where education begins. She hits the nail on the head giving parent's practical advice on teaching children a love for and the ability of reading. This book covers topics such as read alouds, story comprehension, letter sounds, syllables, initial sounds, blending, word families and sight words. She also includes easy suggestions that can be done driving in the car or in your home, and they are super simple ideas. Great read for parents of children birth to age 6 or so.

General advice on encouraging kids to be interested in reading and developing those skills once they are reading but I was looking for a step by step guide to teach my kid how to read ... lots of cool tips but already knew it all and heard it before.

I'd give 3 stars because it is cool but it's not worth $10 so 2 stars
