Présentation de l'éditeur

According to the National Cancer Institute, there are an estimated 13.7 million living Americans who are cancer survivors. The institute expects that number to rise to almost 18 million over the next decade. The Institute of Medicine notes that patients diagnosed with cancer have an estimated 64% chance of surviving five years, up from 50% three decades ago. And most of them have lingering symptoms, both physical and emotional.

The Cancer Survivor is a companion and guide for those millions of individuals who are finally done with treatments but are still on the journey to wholeness. Beth Leibson completed her chemotherapy and radiation in 2007. She had beat cancer, but was left with lingering memory issues, exhaustion, depression, pain, and the fear that at any point, the cancer could return. Here she tells the story of how she rebuilt her life, and shares advice from other experts, addressing the emotional, medical, and professional challenges of life after cancer. Here are the questions you’re afraid to ask (“When will my sex drive come back?”), the questions you hadn’t yet considered (“How do I reenter the work force after a ‘break’ of a year or more?”), and those you know you should be thinking about but haven’t had the energy for (“What supplements or alternative therapies should I be taking to regain my strength?”).

Warm, honest, and full of sage advice, this is the book Leibson wishes she had had when the nightmare of cancer treatments drew to a close and the overwhelming reality of starting life over again began.

As a psychotherapist, I found this book most helpful to work with client navigating life post-cancer. Plus it allows me to understand the unique circumstances and dilemmas that cancer survivors face. Beth Leibson wrote a thoughtful, accessible, and well written book that is a must read for anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis. And, for anyone who works with cancer survivors, or who who lives with a cancer survivor, you can't find a better book to live a more satisfying life after the treatment. Ms. Leibson writes with wisdom, some humor, and a great deal of compassion on a much ignored subject.

Having lost 2 loved 1’s to this mostly yet incurable horrible disease this was a great fact filled book to read. I still struggle today to listen to friends who have it or their loved ones. Not like some diseases that the PPL can help prevent, it now still continues to take its toll regardless of treatment. I love the songs (stand up), benefits & as a former athlete the pink the new athletes wear to help find a cure for this horrific disease.

Maybe by the time my 2 granddaughters get my age they will have a cure. And now the global world still has HIV/AIDS, diabetes, & now Ebola is back & running rampant to deal with.

A must read for undergrad/grad college level Health/P.E. or rehabilitation classes or adults in general. Most everyone is prone to cancer.

Awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written informative fact finding question/answer personal as well others bought with cancer book (statements/testimonies). It was very easy to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. No grammar errors, repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could make a great PP presentation. A very easy rating of 5 stars for this short story (book).

Thank you for the free short story (book)

Par Ann Fry - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Beth grabbed me right in the introduction. First she said "many of us have stared death in the face and lived to tell about it." Then she talked about when you hear the words, "you have cancer" and how you can no longer be in denial about living forever. She completes the introduction stating how helpful it would have been when she was journeying through her cancer, if there had been a book like this.

So, she wrote it. She interviewed experts and survivors. She shared stories about emotions, about sex and body image. She talks about the normalcy of fearing recurrence and always being afraid to go to the doctor for regular checkups. Then, there are practical chapters on legal issues, how to return to work and how to handle other people's comments.

She does all this with a wonderful sense of humor.

It's such a handy guide that I wish had been given to me when I had cancer; and that I will now give to friends and loved ones when they have their journey with cancer. Thank you Beth.

Good for helping me empathize with my husband's experience. He was (is) a cancer survivor when we met and I gained some insight into his thoughts and reactions.

Good overall for helping you find a direction. The second half with a breezy review of a laundry list of alternative treatments seemed out of place.
