HASH(0x92331198) étoiles sur 5 The Man with the Horn 8 mai 2005
Par J. Hughes - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Candy was recorded at the Sonet library in Lidngo, Sweden, on June 30, 1985. The session comprises seven tracks: Love for Sale; Nardis; Candy; Bye Bye Blackburd; Sad Walk; Tempus Fugit; and Red's Blues. Together these performance come in at just under 42 minutes total playing time. The only vocal performance is on the title track, Candy.

This is a superb jazz trio ensemble: Chet Baker (trumpet), Michel Grailler (piano), and Jean Louis Rassinfosse (bass), and it is one of my very favorite Chet Baker CDs. In fact, I believe it is Chet Baker's finest recording and performance in a jazz trio setting. These musicians find the same wave-length and attack this repertoire with poignant spontaniety and amazing improvisation. Each performance is remarkable, if not stunning.

Alone, this CD is worth it for the best version of Love for Sale ever laid down on disc. Simply put, this rendition of Love for Sale may be the best jazz trio performance I have ever heard - bar none. Each musician finds a perfect groove and the interplay is totally engaging, if not hypnotic. This track is an out-and-out demonstration of magnificent musicianship. Chet's playing is as good as it gets on this track - a stellar, moving, memorable performance, and Michel Grailler's pulsating piano riffs along with Jean Louis Rassinfosse's punctuating pin-point bass line make for a listening experience that will leave you breathless. Quintessential, amazing jazz!

I have listened to many great trumpet players over the years, such as Miles Davis, Clark Terry, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Donald Byrd, and Wallace Roney, etc. But without any doubt in my mind, Chet Baker, all said and done, was the best man with a horn - the greatest jazz trumpeter of all time. Along with The Last Great Concert, which features Chet in many venues, including large band, Candy is perhaps his finest jazz trio performance. Find this CD if you can -- and pay the price. It is a rare jewel among jazz treasures.

Chet Baker blew from the the sublime to the lazy and here he is in 1985 at the top of his form with a duo that doesn't miss a nuance. This session is perfect- Baker plays the heads with absolute clarity and his variations never leave the organic flow. Rassinfosse and Graillier are not quite up to Bakers emotional level but more than make up for it with absolute white on rice togetherness in there interactions with Baker.

Those of you are Chet lover's (and there are haters not much in between) one could pick a few great sessions in his carreer like the early Mulligan work, the Dick Twardzick Quartets in Paris,a few dates on Prestige like "Smoki" (a real East Coast sounding date with George Coleman) I would admit many of his late recordings were poor and just quickies done for dope money. But their are exceptions when he was clean like "She Was Too Good To Me" (and I don't like Don Sebesky's fusion style on A&M but it's great) and later 80's recordings such as "Live In Sweden" with Ake Johnasson Trio which has nicest version of Sam Rivers "Beatrice" you'll ever hear, his "Last Great Concert" and this gem.

Done in a stone library the recording is great and you hear the setting which I think inspired Chet Rassinfosse and Grallier. The playing is as J.Hughes noted with and incredible "Nardis" and beautiful "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Love For Sale".Even the title vocal track is clear though of course the voice Chet has was not the same as the 50's.But as in the film soundtrack to "Let's Get Lost" (Called "Bread,Butter, and Champagne" - the film title will get you a Pacific collection of his vocal tracks from the 50's which is essential) when Chet was clean or knew that conditions were auspicious and demanded it, he could rise to the occasion.A great VHS and DVD also were made of this concert.Yes a lot of those commercial LP's in the 60's sucked as did many Steeplechase dates of the 80's.False choppers and lot's of self abuse that prematurely changed his voice and embouchure and not for the better.Yet this CD shows right up till the end Chet had a "feeling" if not loads of technique with his playing and singing. He we find he could summon that greatness right up to the end if one chooses carefully and get's a gem like this CD.
Cheers
Chazz

HASH(0x92352ee8) étoiles sur 5 Great soundtrack from a great video 10 février 2014
Par Mike Tarrani - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is the sound track from the fifty-five minute video titled Baker, Chet - Candy. I own both: this CD has been ripped to my phone so I can play it anywhere, and the video for when I want to enjoy Chet on an entirely different level.

Unfortunately there are no sound samples on this page. The only vocal is on the first track, Candy, followed by some excellent instrumental performances. Chet is ably backed by Michel Graillier on piano and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on bass. The overall mood is informal, but the musicianship is not compromised in any way. Each musician pours his heart and soul into each selection.

I love the laid back feeling that the music imparts, and if you are fortunate enough to watch the video the visual will show why. Baker and his trio are relaxed and enjoying what they are doing.

The music is late life Chet, and his playing is both pensive and full of vitality. I am sure the setting helped (this was recorded in the Sonet Record library in Lindingo, Sweden on June 30th, 1985.) If you are a fan of Chet's mainly instrumental work you will love this. If you are a die hard fan you may want to consider getting this album and the video.

I have always been impressed by the cool jazz sound so admirably exemplified by the artistry of Chet Baker, and I would consider this underrated recording to be one of the winners of a career that was unfortunately seriously hampered by drug addiction. Recorded not in a studio but rather the casual ambience of the library of Sonet Records in Stockholm in 1985, about the same time as another excellent session called 'Chet's Choice' with some overlap of the setlist. This time around Michel Graillier on piano replaced Philip Catherine on guitar, and along with bassist Jean Louis Rassinfosse, create an equally unique atmosphere. The emotional interplay and compatibility of this drumless trio is nothing short of astounding, to the point that the absence of a drummer is hardly noticeable. This is undoubtedly among his finest trio recordings, and the rendition of 'Love For Sale' may be the best performance of this song by anyone ever. The title track is the sole vocal performance of an old pop tune that I find to be quite appealing. All in all not a weak track here. The sound quality is spectacular, and similar to what one might expect from an ECM recording, however, I should mention the fact that I have the Gazell Productions GJCD-1001 version and can't vouch for any others. Highly recommended.
