part of a trilogy, but each book can stand on its own.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Really enjoyed this one, and I can be hard to please! 2 mai 2015

OK, I'm a big reader and I enjoy all kinds of literature. (Threw that in for any "historical-romance shamers/literary snobs" that might be reading these reviews for some reason.) I've probably read 1000 historical romance novels over the last 30 years and this one was really great! Can't count how many books I have purchased, only to throw them away 20-30 pages in. Reasons vary from:
Just plain stupid.
No romance, just porn. (Big difference, for me anyway, between hot and porn.)

This is the first book of its kind in a long time I really enjoyed from start to finish. I happened on it, and just now ordered the other 2 in this series.
Now that I know this author, I can look forward to more books that I don't throw away shortly after starting!

I would like to say to Ms. Thacker: Well done!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a historical that takes place in Europe at a time when a horse and buggy was a limo ride.

When the novel opens, the heroine is a young widow with a toddler age daughter. She visits Amsterdam and is part of a group of young women abducted to be brides for a lost colony of Vikings. The Vikings have some cool supernatural (and very interesting!) stuff going on, and they need wives. So...... they have a time honored tradition of stealing women - married, single, any color any size - doesn't matter. The guys come off a boat, find a gal, stalk her, then snag her and meet back at the boat at sunset.

Most of the novel is how a hero, who is the head Marshal of his people, who doesn't want a wife, becomes the husband/captor of the heroine.... and eventually (it is a romance after all!) a man in love. This isn't a Stockholm Syndrome novel. The heroine bites, scratches, and fights with every fiber of her being to escape and return to her child. It does have a very nice ending.

The writing! The Story! This was such a fun book! It was fun getting a glimpse of Viking life, and a paradise society, and I loved the characters! The Cover!!! Whew.... fans self.....

Now I have to locate the other books in the series. This author was so good and kept my attention - actually I bypassed 6 other books I was reading to let this one take the lead, so my other poor novels are languishing unread.

This is the first novel by this authors that I have read, but I intend to put her on the upper tier of my to be read list.

This was a beautiful read, and while I don't normally read much about Vikings in the 1300's, I was very happy that I decided to download this book to read. Avril, our girl, is a widow with a 3 year old child. Her husband died before even knowing he was going to be a father. Avril, and her friend Josette, are to attend a wedding in a nearby town, and the day they arrive there is a festival and Josette and her decide to attend. While on the island of Asgard, there is a group of Viking men that are getting ready to come ashore to claim wives. Hauk, is sent with the men to make sure they don't break any rules, and they have but 2 days once they land to find a woman and bring her back by any means. The last day comes, and they are at the festival as well, and there is a Viking that breaks the rules, and Hauk in trying to save a woman's life has to say he claims her, and ends up bringing Avril back to the island with him. There is a marriage ceremony shortly after they return, and Avril learns that there are mysteries on the island that are hard to explain, and also that it is impossible to leave. It seems while Avril still wants to try and find a way off of the island, the other women have fallen in love with the men that have captured them, so that leaves her to escape on her own. In her efforts of trying to leave Hauk becomes surprised with her bravery, courage, and skills. Can she escape? Will she also fall in love with Hauk? Does she make it back to her little girl? Will Hauk let her go so she can be with her little girl, since he knows how it feels to be raised as an orphan? I don't think you will be disappointed with this story, so I definitely encourage you to read this one. I also know this is book 3 of a series, and since I didn't read book 1 or 2 I was afraid I missed the beginning of the story, however this book easily stands on it's own and I did not feel that I was missing information or other parts of the story.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 having been through this process twice at great personal cost 30 octobre 2014

Hauk Valbrand is the peacekeeper of Asgard, a timeless island paradise shrouded in fog and hidden far from the machinations of warring kings and violence of man. The people of Asgard have lived in this paradise for hundreds of years. But while the island provides everything the inhabitants require, the native women cannot bear children. So every three decades or so, some of the men choose to venture out and capture brides to bring back to the island to woo their hearts and start another generation of islanders. Hauk, having been through this process twice at great personal cost, has no intention of ever taking a bride again, but as peacekeeper must travel with the men and protect the group. The widowed Lady Avril de Varennes is visiting Antwerp with her friend Josette. Quite suddenly, Josette is snatched from Avril’s side and hauled off by a hulking madman. In a quick turn of events, Hauk must step in and save Avril from another member of the group by claiming her for himself. Avril and Josette are taken back to Asgard and married to their captors. But Avril has a three year old daughter left orphaned at home and vows to escape the island and her captor at any cost.

Avril is a headstrong and independent woman who is used to relying on no one but herself. She stubbornly refuses to accept Hauk’s insistence that she is unable to leave the island, but quickly begins to catch on to the fact that something is not quite right with the island’s inhabitants either. She is resourceful and intelligent, organizes reconnaissance missions with the other captive brides in order to gather information that may prove useful to their escape.

Hauk is a lonely, but honorable man with a strict set of ethical codes. He is torn over his growing desire for Avril and the knowledge that he will eventually be devastated when she dies. He’s buried two wives already and has no desire to bury a third, so he builds walls around his heart to protect it from being damaged further. A little broody in the beginning, eventually he opens up to Avril and we see the poet inside — the passionate, devoted protector who yearns for a family of his own.

The love between Hauk and Avril is a slow burn, building gradually and blocked by natural obstacles such as Avril’s daughter to whom Avril is desperate to return and the fact that Avril is, for a while, in a forced captor/captured relationship with this unknown man. Thankfully, Hauk respects Avril’s boundaries and does not press his suit where it is not wanted. The relationship develops gradually as the couple spend time together and get to know one another. Though they both recognize that they are perfect mates, Avril’s daughter and Avril’s captured status continue to press on their relationship; together they must come to terms with these complications and decide what is most important.

Overall, I’m glad I pushed past the initial balking at the Asgard fantasy element, as I usually don’t like romantic fantasy. His Captive Bride, however, was thoroughly enjoyable with a rounded cast of characters, subtle, well-paced character development, and a plot that had me turning pages for hours waiting to find out what happened next. I particularly appreciated the twist at the end (which did NOT go as I expected) and the satisfying conclusion of a mystery subplot.

Avril's new husband is Hauk Valbrand and he’s not happy about the situation either. Hauk didn't want another bride and while he was attracted to Avril he would have left it at, but circumstances intervened and they are forced to wed. Lady Avril is still loyal to her deceased husband and has no need of a new husband, all she wants to do is go home to her daughter. Being the strong, intelligent, independent women she is Lady Avril soon realizes something is different about Hauk and his island Asgard and is determined to find answers and escape. Hauk’s heart begins to soften as he begins to care for Lady Avril and fall in love with her. Lady Avril maybe falling for Hauk but she’s still trying to escape and return to her daughter. The character were well developed and had good chemistry. Both Hauk and Avril know they must choose between their love and desire, and honor and duty. A great book and one I’m sure you will enjoy too!!!
