Présentation de l'éditeur

Thirty-nine year old CC is living the urban dream: a high-powered job in advertising, a beautiful flat, and a wild bunch of gay friends to spend the weekends with. And yet she feels like the Titanic - slowly, inexorably, and against all expectation, sinking.

The truth is, CC would rather be digging turnips on a remote farm than convincing the masses to buy a life-changing pair of double-zippered jeans - rather be snuggling at home with the Missing Boyfriend than playing star fag-hag in London's latest coke-spots. But sightings of men without weird fetishes or secret wives are rarer than an original metaphor, and CC fears that pursuing the Good Life alone will just leave her feeling even more isolated.

Just wanted to add that this is such a funny, engaging and well written book full of warmth, and bittersweet, not to mention tragic comedy that it stands out from the pack in such a popular hot topic amongst chick lit novels. Intelligently written, I really enjoyed this novel and couldn't put it down.

CC is main character and is a somewhat smart woman nearing 40 with lots of friends but still looking for the missing boyfriend that will complete her life, and worried her biological clock is ticking away. Stuck in a bit of a rut and used to dating disasters, she can't see that the one person who could make her happy is right there. It's a sort of modern day Bridget Jones, but with more twists, turns and explores more relationships. And will a woman consider anything to have a child? You will have to read this to find out!

I really liked the cover, the title and the plot of the book and was very happy when I got it during the promotion period for free.

The plot was interesting: 39 year old CC has everything - great job, nice London apartment and a cat, a bunch of gay friends for support and fabulous nights out. She just terribly misses a boyfriend.

When I started to read it, I enjoyed it and wanted to see what comes next. But as I progressed I realized I wasn't enjoying it anymore.

It became like a collection of too many everyday life happenings, details, events, characters, and I had to force myself to continue reading. I caught myself looking at my Kindle at 10% and then again on 20% thinking how I actually knew more about her friends and their social life than about the main character herself.

I didn't really feel CC's feminine side. I didn't really feel for her for the majority of the book. It is only in the second part that we get to know her better and that is a bit late. I missed more of her interaction with men. And I missed more of the story development between CC and her at the end found boyfriend.

The end is somewhat better, but did not make up for the rest of the book.

Even though I like to read both chick lit and romance, this book didn't do it for me.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 unsatisfying 10 mars 2013

This starts out well and goes along well, but in the end it’s unsatisfying.

There’s a huge amount of time spent on the mother’s love life, but no thought given by the narrator to what mother’s life is like and why she would take up with an inappropriate, to CC, man. There’s tons of time spent on CC’s real name, and no explanation as to why she and her brother had such oddly spelled names. The boyfriend and the deceased friend are revealed, at the end, to be life-long best friends, but again, no mention of how that friendship worked for them. To get where he was, the boyfriend must have been a driven student and worker, the friend seems like a flake drifting through life. How did that work for them? The ex-boyfriend plays heavily on CC’s mind. She describes him as a jerk and worse. Yet there’s no indication that CC ever did anything in that relationship, right or wrong. She was just there and expected the boyfriend to stay. There is absolutely no thought given to the lives of the people around the narrator and so all of their actions seem to come out of thin air.

I thought everything would be tied up at the end, but no.

Although the writing is good and it is well edited, I cannot recommend this to anyone.
