a new author for me to read

Julie O'Hara is a complex, vibrant protagonist whose particular skill (she is a body language expert) is invaluable in helping her `read' her suspects. But it is when the reader learns about her tragic past that Julie really starts to jump off the page.
One of the book's main strengths is that even the supplementary characters feel fully fleshed out - they are dynamic and interesting - which makes it more than just a murder mystery as you are deeply involved with the various family members and friends (from the deceased's relatives to Mafia members).
The author's greatest success is in putting together such a complex plot while retaining the page-turning narrative that keeps the reader hooked. Sometimes when an author adds extra elements to a plot it can detract from the storytelling, but when Castle Cay sees the introduction of the upper echelons of law enforcement, this only serves to deepen the reader's interest in this addictive novel.
This book is well worth reading - I will certainly be looking out for all future Julie O'Hara stories.
This novel centers around Julie O'Hara, a woman in her late 30s who learns that her best friend, Marc Solomon, has suddenly passed away. Although Marc had AIDS, Julie refuses to believe that he committed suicide, and she soon begins to suspect foul play. Traveling from her home in Florida back to Boston, where she and Marc met many years before, stirs up some of the dark memories that she and Marc both shared of Castle Cay, a private island owned by the Solomon family. Did Castle Cay play a role in Marc's murder?
Author Lee Hanson does an excellent job of building suspense in this murder mystery. She writes likeable characters who are well-developed, adding interest to the plot. Although the one "bad guy" in this story was fairly obvious, I personally had no idea how exactly Marc's death occurred until it was revealed in the book. The author description describes this as the "first novel in the Julie O'Hara mystery series," and I see that there is already a second available, Swan Song. I would definitely be interested in reading further books in this series, especially to see whether Hanson uses Julie's occupation as a "body language expert" to greater advantage. But as a start, I would definitely recommend this engaging first book.
This is my 2nd 5 star review for Lee Hanson's Castle Cay and Swan Song. Lee Hanson ranks right up there with the best female mystery writers of our time.
I love Lee Hanson's choice of having a unique main character, Julie O'Hara who is a body language expert and is also a down-to-earth person you'd want for a friend. Julie never gives up on finding who is telling the truth or not by watching for clues that she gets from their body language. She is so casually cool, calm and very relaxed when she asks people simple questions and watch's their movements for clues.
Lee's stories grab me from the beginning and keeps my full attention through out her stories and does not add any gory scenes or bloody scenes or over the top sexual scenes or violence. My type of mystery for sure.
A great read with believable characters and believable stories.
I can hardly wait to see what Lee Hanson plans to do with her fascinating characters in her next book.
I highly recommend Swan Song and Castle Cay
Especially at the beginning, i couldn't keep track of all the different characters but it was well-written, which counts for alot in my book :)
Except for a few missing words here and there, the book was descriptive and intelligently worded
I would try another read from this author in the future.
The beginning of the book flips back and forth from present to past. I dislike books that do that, but at least this didn't continue throughout the book. I felt like the author tried to put a lot of 'must have themes' into the book without really developing any of them (a gay couple, a crime mob family, a dysfunctional family, drug trafficking, sexual deviance, infidelity).
As I said this was a quick read so maybe if you're looking for a light diversion, this book would be okay to read. I honestly don't know if I'd read another book from this author or not.
