Présentation de l'éditeur

It's no easy tour of duty for Lt. Nova Whiteside when her interstellar transport is taken by pirates and she is then tagged for termination. Could it have something to do with the mysterious alien they were transporting? Having gone from merely MIA to technically AWOL, any chance of escape leaves her no choice but to rely on Sethran Kada, a former lover, for help.

Unfortunately, she realizes that they are now on opposite sides of an escalating war between the Commonwealth Union of Planets and an increasingly dangerous rebel organization.

In trying to find who is threatening her life, they discover a plot to destroy a distant planet - a world inhabited by creatures that are the key to Nova's survival - and a conspiracy that threatens the stability of the Union Commonwealth.

Can Nova go beyond her strict military training to cooperate with people whom she is sworn to destroy?

"The characterizations are solid, the writing is crisp and fluid, and all of the questions posed within the story are answered. Reher is a great storyteller, and you know they know this from the confidence exhibited in the book."

"What a fascinating imagination Chris Reher has! ... descriptions of all the other worldly beings was a fun mind exercise along with rather exciting adventures. Read it! It is worth the time!"

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Chris Reher - a great storyteller 25 décembre 2012

Though The Catalyst's timeline precedes that of 'Only Human,' I read the latter first. Even so, it was not hard for me to follow the story. In The Catalyst, we see Nova, wet behind the ears from her birth into the military scene. She's as inflexible, stubborn, and by-the-book as a true 'greenie,' and it takes a rough patch in her career, and the handsome Seth (an old flame of Nova's) to show her that the occasional bending of the rules isn't so bad after all.

Reher does not waste time or drag their feet. From the beginning, we're thrown into action and adventure, watching as Nova battles with doubts concerning those she cares about, and also those she should trust within her work organization. The story moves along fast, but there are times when it slows and we get to enjoy and appreciate the fascinating world and its people Reher has created. The underlying cause for which Nova, Seth, and their comrades fight is very positive, and I greatly enjoyed that Reher pushes their characters to make certain sacrifices to attempt to achieve this goal.

My only gripe:
I loved reading Seth and Nova's relationship, and I felt that the author could have expanded a bit more on them at the end of the book. Of course, not everyone will agree with me on this one.

The characterizations are solid, the writing is crisp and fluid, and all of the questions posed within the story are answered. Reher is a great storyteller, and you know they know this from the confidence exhibited in the book. I enjoyed reading this immensely and fully believe that others will, too.

I thought this and the other two in the Nova Whiteside series, Only Human and Rebel Alliances, were a lot of fun. Although our female protagonist is a relatively high ranking and experience military officer, she does spend quite a bit of time being rescued and oggled by brawny, gorgeous men, and having good sex too, which I appreciate :) But while the relationship between her and her male costars is central to the story, it doesn't completely sidetrack it, which I also appreciate. The story itself is frontier politics - big and powerful alliances verses terrorist separatists - and there's plenty of playing around in space ships and on strange planets with stranger scenery to keep things interesting and moving outside of the romance department. This is the Star Wars school of character development - good guys tend to be good, bad guys tend to be bad, but here and there Reher did play with these expectations in her supporting cast, which made them more interesting. Enjoyable, and I will read the next one.

Well written and edited. Catalyst takes off in the vein of Dune. An essential element is the life blood of the Combined Union of Planets. And as is the usual case, corruption permeates a new discovery of a source. Lt Nora Whiteside, daughter of one a well known Colonel of Air Command and Section Leader of the elite Vanguard force finds herself in the unenviable position of guarding a tank full of some liquid with a strange creature in it and running through the cargo ship that has just been boarded by pirates. All her colleagues and fellow Air Command pilots are dead and she is about to be when an old lover from her academy days, shows up and rescues her. And that is just the first Chapter!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable Space Adventure Story with a bit of Romance 6 janvier 2013

This is a science fiction story where the Heroine, Nova, is a pilot in the military. She is on assignment when the ship she is on is boarded by pirates. An old friend of hers from her academy days (Seth) is there and helps her get away from the pirates. Seth works with the rebels (against the government she is a military officer for) and Nova finds herself involved in the conflict. I'm being very vague here as I don't want to give any spoilers.

The writing is well done without grammar, spelling or other issues. There was a good amount of action in the book. Not too much that it was overwhelming. The pacing was good in that the action sometimes slowed down to allow you to see the characters interact and talk with each other. I did like the mystery that surrounded Seth. There was a bit of romance between the two lead characters. It was done in a believeable way as they had been involved in their academy days (several years earlier). Thus, the sense of history they had made it believeable that they would banter back and forth right away and get re-involved.

One drawback is that I did feel a bit thrown into this new world. I struggled for the first 15% or so to make sense of what was going on. I didn't understand the government or the structure of the Union. There were so many worlds and terms thrown around that I felt very lost at times (Targon Magra, Peilion, Feyd, etc)... the names are all so different that it was hard sometimes to keep things straight. The same thing with the beings (I picked up on the humans and centurians right away but others were introduced) and the names (there were so many different people and names thrown at the reader in the first 10% of the book that it was a bit hard to keep them straight as well). The end of the book on my kindle mentions that there is another book with Nova called "Only Human". Even though Only Human takes place after the events of this book, I believe that Only Human was published first. Perhaps more of the world, background, government structure, etc., was explained more in this other book. However, I was able to understand the story without reading this other book (I just struggled some of the time).

The book came to a nice conclusion without any type of cliffhanger. Overall, it was a good book that I finished without skipping around. If you are expecting "insta-love" and "soul mate" type of stuff, then this isn't your book. Instead, it is a good space adventure novel with a bit of romance mixed in.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Military Scifi 31 juillet 2016

A nice balance of action, romance and military scifi.

While guarding an assigned package, Lieutenant Whiteside and team are attacked by rebel forces. The package breaks open to reveal an alien squid-like creature that bites Nova, implanting a "catalyst" into her blood.

Under rebel attack, she is saved by Seth Kadan, ex-boyfriend, and now rebel. Or is he? Threading a dangerous path of spies, high-level traitors, double agents and aliens, Nova and Seth try to stay alive while revisiting the passions of their past and ferreting out traitors so they can save a helpless alien world from destruction.

Interesting aliens and believable characters.
