HASH(0x959ece40) étoiles sur 5 Not for hard core fans or those just looking for a cheap overview of Mingus either 4 janvier 2011
Par Shawn K. Smith - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
My local record shop had about 5 copies of this set on the shelf for 6 months or so. I saw it and being a big fan of Mingus I was intrigued. I tried to do some research on the set but was unable to find much useful information online. Well after 6 months they put a discount on the already silly low price ($13 for the whole set) so I decided to buy it just to check it out. I've got a handful of similar box sets from European labels such as History and Past Perfect so I thought I had a decent idea what I was in for. Typically these sort of sets contain little or no documentation outside of song titles and recording dates. They are usually arranged chronologically, and often they use inferior quality (re)mastering compared to their US label counterparts.

After unpackaging the set I set about trying to figure out exactly what all I had. This set contains no information other than song titles and the recordings are not organized in any meaningful manner. They often jump from the 40s to the 60s and the recording quality varies greatly from track to track making it a frustrating and confusing listening experience. After several hours of research and comparing recordings between the box set and domestic cd/lp releases I was able to determine the box set the complete contents of the following albums:
Charles Mingus - Mingus! (1960)
Charles Mingus - Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (1960)
Charles Mingus - The Jazz Experiments of Charles Mingus (1954)
The Quintet - Jazz At Massey Hall (1953)

I was also able to determine that the set contains parts of these albums
Charles Mingus - Reincarnation of a Love Bird (1961)
Charles Mingus - Mysterious Blues (1960)

Note that in every case the content from these original LPs is broken up across multiple discs. As in track 1 from the original LP appears on disc 3, track 2 appears on disc 8, track 3 appears on disc 6, etc. It is literally entirely random. I'd consider the sound quality of everything to be passable even if it is not as good as domestic releases. However the Jazz At Massey Hall release is significantly worse than domestic releases. It has been heavily hiss reduced and the entire recording is not nearly as rich as domestic releases. There are also several more obscure releases taken from 78s issued early in Mingus's career. This set also contains a decent amount of sideman work from early in Mingus's career. I grew weary of trying to track down where the material may have come from. Mingus was a great bass player, but the real value in this set is in his work as a composer and not as a sideman.

Overall I'd give the set a 1 out of 5 star rating. I'm usually not frustrated by a lack of liner notes, or lack of documentation because given a reasonable track ordering and recording dates it can be fairly easy to track down more information if one so chooses. However the complete lack of information and random track ordering make this set very hard to enjoy even for casual fans. The constant change in recording quality, group size, music style., etc results in a total lack of context. One minute you are listening to a quartet recording from 1951 and the next a 10+ person band from 1960. One track your listening to bird and diz blow over bebop changes and the next is a 12 minute intricate Mingus composition. I can't imagine too many people would find this an enjoyable listening experience.

In the end I'm not really sure who this set is aimed at. Hard core fans will be unsatisfied by the fact that some albums are only partially covered, the lack of documentation, and random track ordering. People just wanting to get an overview of Mingus's work will be missing out on nearly every important composition he wrote because that work was all done on larger US labels and has yet to fall into public domain in Europe so it is not contained in this set.

Basically this set is only for people that just want a big random pile of Mingus's music for cheap, and aren't concerned with recording quality, context, or hearing his major compositions. As I said before I have several similar box sets from other European labels and I'd buy more of them, but I'll avoid titles from the membran label from now on.

Before adding my two cents I would like to thank reviewers Shawn K. Smith and David Porta for compiling extremely helpful information regarding the contents of this set. I especially loved Smith's review even though it disagreed with my take because he provided a wealth of helpful information and made valid points.

There appears to be some polarization regarding this box set. On one hand there are reviewers who are displeased by the incoherent track list (not to mention lack of documentation). Then there is the royalty factor in that the publisher is taking advantage of early copyright expiration in Europe. Those are valid points of view.

On the other hand this is the art and work of Charles Mingus, and it is representative of his earlier years and his genius. For the record I have nearly all of his released albums, so I had the tracks in this set already. I purchased this set to loan to friends who wanted to dig deeper into Mingus' music. Also, for my own listening that hodge-podge track sequence is a plus because it's a giant playlist that feeds me Mingus' music almost randomly. Sometimes breaking up the rote, familiar track sequences forces you to listen to the music with a more critical ear.

I'll confess that the sound quality is not going to impress audiophiles, but it's not horrible either. I have some albums that have been remastered to death (the only way I can describe them). Given the choice between that treatment or the quality of this set I'll take the more natural sounding tracks here because they reflect the recordings as they were captured during their era, relatively crude recording technology and all.

Is this set for everyone? That's debatable. I've never hesitated to lend out discs to spark interest in Mingus among my friends. On the other hand it may be a little too obscure for many who want to delve into jazz of late 40s and 1950s. That's why we have Miles, Bird and Dizzy.

If this set does interest you I recommend that you also check out another ten-disc, value priced set titled Kind of Mingus. There is surprisingly little duplication of tracks between the two sets, giving you a lot of Mingus' music at a bargain. I will forewarn that set has the same issues and limitations as this one, but if you see the pluses in this one, you will that one as well.

Definitely heed Paul G. Levesque's recommendations in his April 26, 2011 review because they are on target.

I'll admit that the format for this boxed set makes it difficult to like. The "mix and match" approach, where you have a fiery, Eric Dolphy-driven 1960 outing cheek by jowl with a 1950 session with Mingus, Red Norvo and Tal Farlow can make you want to throw the whole set out the window. But hey, that's what iTunes is for. Go ahead and import all 10 CDs into iTunes, then build the following (fantastic) collection, based on the following CDS:

Red Norvo Trio with Tal Farlow and Charles Mingus: The Savoy Sessions
The Complete 1960 Nat Hentoff Sessions
At Massey Hall 2 ... with the Amazing Bud Powell
Jazz at Massey Hall/the Quintet
Charles "Baron" Mingus: West Coast 1945-1949
The Jazz Experiments of Charlie Mingus
Debut Rarities 4
The Eminent J.J. Johnson Vol 2

With a little effort, you have a great collection of truly memorable Mingus music. And you also get a sense of the range of his musicla genius

Many are extended far beyond 3 minutes. 6,7,8,9,10,11,13,19 minutes.
Comes in at under 14 cents per track, if you shop. Wow!
Jazz!
Thank goodness for different copyright expiration laws in Europe.

If you know Germany's Membran-Documents label and their 10-disc box sets of public domain recordings, this is one of them.

Wondering why you get 10 CDs for 17 bucks? Because this product is pure junk--the kind of rip-off music that reputable vendors should steer clear of.

Despite it's title and the tracks listed on the Amazon page, this boxed set does not contain the album, "Mysterious Blues." This 10-CD set is a monaural hodge-podge of unidentified tracks supposedly recorded by Mingus, though you can't be sure. There is not a single word of text accompanying the CDs. There's no way to tell where these tunes come from, when they were recorded, or who plays them. And it's doubtful that this set was authorized by Sue Mingus.

If you want genuine Mingus, buy a known entity.
