The story isn't without substance: The reader is a witness to a main character's (the widow, Ms. Thompson's) struggle to decide whether she should or should receive favorably the romantic approach of a friendly Frenchman (M. Lacordaire). The reader will have a point of view, so will Mrs. Thompson, and so will Trollope. A good story indeed. Not a life changer, but worthy, I think, of four stars.
It seemed clear to the woman and most of the people at the hotel that the man was in love with the woman and wanted to marry her. He was a very kind man and very courteous to her and her two daughters who were with her. But she knew nothing more about him. She felt she could not marry a man unless she knew his profession and income. She felt he would be proposing shortly, and felt she had to find a way to enquire about his profession and income.
The story is told in a warm manner and we become fond of all the characters in the tale and we, like the patrons in the hotel, wonder if the man will propose, and if he does will he be disappointed.
