Présentation de l'éditeur

Chess Developments is a brand new series providing state-of-the-art coverage of chess openings.

Chess Developments focuses on the current trends – concentrating on critical lines, theoretical novelties and powerful new ideas. It offers players of all levels the opportunity to keep up-to-date with current opening theory whilst also expanding and improving their repertoires.

The Sicilian Dragon is undeniably one of the most popular and eagerly discussed chess openings. The main lines lead to tremendously complex positions in which both sides attack freely. Vigorito provides a good survey of current theory. My experience with the Dragon started many years ago in a local club in Evanston IL where I played the Yugoslav Attack against a skilled opponent. I burned the midnight oil trying to crack the secrets of the Dragon. When I returned to active play more than 20 years later, I decided, hey if you can't beat 'em, join 'em and settled on the Dragon as my defense to 1 e4.
But, the landscape had changed. It's not quite as easy as Fischer's famous saying "sac sac and mate" for White, but preponderance of games still favor White; former main line with ...Rc8 and ...Nc4 is considered slow.

The book is organized to bold-face the major variations. It's not an ECO-style arrangement where the reader must wend his way through a myriad of minor variations first. I like it. Not too wordy but he provides ample description of why certain moves work out well or poorly, which makes the going easier than ECO's tree style. And it insures that newcomers will get their feet wet on the theory without so much struggling. If nothing else, the line 9 0-0-0 d5 10 Kb1!? is worth being aware of -- otherwise it will come as a major shock.
It's hard for me to believe that major advances in Dragon theory will continue to be found, the opening has been picked over for quite some time. But you never know.
The Dragon provides players a chance for exciting mutual kamikaze attacks -- real chess fun. But it's better to go in prepared, and Vigorito's book will definitely help you to do just that. I'd rate this book appropriate for tournament players of Expert (or aspiring expert) level or higher.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An incredible lesson for Black on the Yugoslav attack! 18 mars 2013

I had previously adopted the Accelerated Dragon and played it in USCF tournaments for a year back to I was rated between USCF 1600+ to 1700+. However, I figured out that I didn't actually enjoy the Accelerated Dragon and except I could push the d pawn to d5 in a move (d7-d5, instead of d7-d6-d5) from time to time, I didn't find any other part of the opening that is attractive to me. Most importantly, as an ambitious 1800+ player who is seeking to adjust the opening repertoire into a sharper style, I determined to dump the Accelerated Dragon and pick up its aggressive cousin: the pure Dragon. As an universal well-known truth, there are no that many White's systems have specific threats to the Dragon but only the Yugoslav Attack, which is featured by White's general set-up based on Be3-f3-Qe2-0-0-0, and later on a g4 and h4. Hence, without a doubt, general knowledge and skills to against the Yugoslav has mainly determined how well can a Dragon player score, since whether on the internet or over the board tournament the Yugoslav Attack is the most frequent seem response.

This Dragon book provides a complete repertoire for Black to against the Yugoslav attack. The author gives entire 45 annotated games, hundreds of other complete/incomplete example games in annotated variations and important principle/tips in each variation. For instance, the author shows that Black should always answer an early h4 (without playing g4 first) with h5, and if White completes his Yugoslav set-up without playing Bc4(which is always played to stop ...d5) then Black can play d5 to sac a pawn and gain compensation based on attacking White's long-castled king.

So far I had studied this book for 3 months (finished studied 2/3 of the variations and 1/3 of the example games) but haven't had a chance to try the Dragon over the real board yet as I am on a break from tournaments. However, I had tried my Dragon out on ICC 15-min and standard games (my ICC 15-min and standard ratings are around 1950) during last 2 month, and I had scored an overall around 60~70% against the Yugoslav attack. Indeed! As I study step by step throughout this Dragon book that specifically aims on teaching Black how to play against the Yugoslav Attack in different variations, I had quickly archived the Dragon general ideas and some "secret Dragon skills" into my head. Thus, I strongly recommend any player rated between 1400-2200 who wants to starting out to play the Dragon(especially the Yugoslav Attack) or learn more about it to buy this book, and take your time to study it! Especially for players like me, who are ready to starting out their journey along the Dragon, you'll find out that with sufficient study on this book, you won't be afraid of the Yugoslav Attack at all since you had in mind how to defend accurately and you'll get plenty of attacking ideas in your head with weapons like attacking along the half-opened c file, pushing the a and b pawn or sac the rook on c3.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 By far the best and most comprehensive coverage of the Sicilian dragon 10 octobre 2015

By far the best and most comprehensive coverage of the Sicilian dragon. Since black faces no problems except against white's Yugoslav attack, this book only covers the Yugoslav. It covers the Soltis, Modern, Topolov, and Chinese variations starting from 9. Bc4 and 5 lines starting from 9.o-o-o. This book has great game choice and great explanation behind theory as well as many long alternate variations. If you want to play the dragon this book is a must read and the theory is very recent.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Not a Comprehensive Dragon Repetoire Book, But Excellent Coverage of 9. Bc4 & 9. 0-0-0 & g4 24 juin 2015

I am USCF 2000+, and I have been playing the dragon for approximately 15 years. This is an excellent book, but is not a comprehensive Dragon Repertoire book. It covers 9. Bc4 and 9. 0-0-0 & g4 very thoroughly, but you will need additional resources for white's other tries. I get the Soltis Variation all the time both online and over the board, and I find this book to be an excellent reference.

Vigorito is an excellent chess player and scout within the opening scene of the game. The only problem with this kind of book's is that they are quite soon outdated. So use it, together with a subscription to chessplublishing.com on the internet, an excellent source for novelties within the openings. The author Vigorito (mist well known I think because of his two splendid books on the King's Indian) is a contributor on that website as well.
As far is the dragon is concerned I would say: buy this book as an enhancement on the one written by Edward Dearing, which is a comprehensive one about this exciting opening complex.
