Présentation de l'éditeur

The ChessCafe Puzzle Books! We are pleased to offer excerpts from three of the most popular chess books available today. They are The ChessCafe Puzzle Books 1 and 2 by German grandmaster Karsten Müller and Book 3, also by Müller, and in cooperation with Dutch international master Merijn van Delft. All three books are available in both traditional, hard copy and electronic editions. The original books are published in figurine algebraic notation, with Informant-style evaluation symbols. For this Puzzle Sampler, we have converted the notation to simple English algebraic and replaced the Informant-style evaluation symbols with text. The ChessCafe Puzzle Book 1 combines clear discussions of tactical themes with over 600 well-chosen positions to test, challenge and teach. Although the classic combinations are not ignored, the great emphasis is on positions from modern tournament practice of the last decade. From CCPB1, four puzzles with different tactical themes (please note that the actual numbering of the puzzles has been changed for this Kindle edition). It is Black to move in Puzzles 1 and 2, White to move and Puzzles 3 and 4. Solutions are immediately after the four puzzles. The ChessCafe Puzzle Book 2 takes on the more difficult and less tangible aspect of positional play. As most chess instructors and players know, it is much more difficult to teach and learn strategic concepts than tactics. The author not only presents puzzles to solve, but also presents examples of different strategic ideas. Here is an excerpt from the section about Outposts. One of the most important skills a chessplayer needs is the ability to defend a position that is under siege. In the third volume in the highly acclaimed, best-selling ChessCafe Puzzle Book series, international grandmaster Karsten Müller, along with international master Merijn van Delft, examines and expounds upon the vital defensive concepts and techniques used to repulse enemy attacks. From CCPB3, three puzzles with different themes (please note that the actual numbering of the puzzles has been changed for this Kindle edition). It is Black to move in all three puzzles. Solutions are immediately after the three puzzles.

This offers samples from three of Chess Cafe's puzzle books. The first is on tactics, the second on positional play, and the last one is about defense. (They did interest me in the actual books!)

The puzzles are not easy nor are they difficult. This is not something for a beginner. In other words, you will already have to be fairly proficient in chess to get anything useful from them. The puzzles are "best move" and not "mate in..." The only thing you get is the position on the board (looks good in Kindle) with a brief note to clue you into the challenge. (Something that doesn't happen over the board, but for training purposes it's fine.)

The puzzles are NOT the bulk of the book (thus the three stars) with most of the book being advertisement (not samples) of other books (such as Lasker's Manuel of chess).

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Really fails to take advantage of Kindle format 11 octobre 2012
Par Gregory Kennedy - Publié sur
Don't get the Kindle edition of these books. The format is reproduced straight from printed puzzle books - in other words, "problem A, problem B, problem C, problem D, for all solutions turn to page 186." With a printed book this works fine: you can rapidly flip back and forth between pages.

I was expecting much more on the Kindle though - say, display the problem on one page, and play out the annotated solution move-by-move simply by tapping Next Page. There's ample disk space to store little chessboard images, why not take advantage of that to make a much better interactive experience? Instead you must cycle between NextNextNext... PrevPrevPrev... as you try to follow along. The solution formatting needs work too: the "correct" path is printed in Bold, which on a Kindle is nearly indistinguishable from a regular font. All the more confusing.

Overall the series on Kindle is a really lackluster effort.

Been playing 60 yars now. Seldom see chess problems where the position pictured had nothing to do with the solution presented -- several pages later, forcing reader to go back and forth to discover that to move as presented requires putting your moving piece upon the square occupied by your other piece: for instance. .

2 stars only because this is just a review of other books to read, in short, basically an advertisement disguised as something it is not. It does give some interesting information about other books that are available and so the two stars. Overall I was looking for some good puzzles. It is free, so no strong complaints, just disappointed in the title that makes one think that it is something that it is not.
