Présentation de l'éditeur

Students and practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine must learn hundreds of commonly used herbs as the first step in studying Chinese herbal medicine. Additionally, junior practitioners lack the clinical experience required to ensure that they can skilfully select the appropriate herbs to use in the formulas. This presents them with a major challenge.

Chinese Herbal Medicines: Comparisons and Characteristics presents a method of learning individual herbs through vivid and clear discussion of their characteristics and through a comparison with other herbs of their characteristics and strengths. This clear and logical approach makes it easy for the user to understand and memorize the functions of specific herbs. It also enables experienced practitioners to improve their therapeutic results through the use of better formulas.

HASH(0x8b9bf7e0) étoiles sur 5 Great book if you get the COLOR version 5 octobre 2012

I am in my second year of TCM school and ordered this book at the suggestion of one my classmates. It's a great book, but I had to return it for one strange reason - the copy I received from Amazon, although it was brand new and bound in hardback like the version I had seen in person, appeared to be some kind of bootleg copy where the pages were run off in black and white on poor quality paper. This would have been okay except for the fact that the graphs which appear at the end of each section need to appear in COLOR in order to be read clearly. Having a black and white version rendered this aspect of the book useless. A true printing of this book should have glossy pages and RED ink - not sure what was going on with the version I received. I may try the Kindle version to see if it shows up in color, because I do want this book for my studies - but I'm not willing to pay full price for an inferior copy.

I pre-ordered this book before it was even available. The suspense built, and I am happy to say that it was worth the wait. It cuts right through to the type of comparisons I wish were covered in school more thoroughly. Does it fill in all the blanks? No. But no one book could. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone in the clinical practice. As an example, thea author compares gui zhi with ma huang. Surely we know ma huang is much stronger for releasing the exterior and inducing sweating. But the author goes on to point out that gui zhi is sweet and therefore has a tropism for the spleen and thus the flesh. This makes it a good choice for treating aches and pains in the muscles. She also points out that it is twig, thus looking like limbs, is good for pain in the arm and shoulder relate to bi syndrome. We may have learned all this in school, but its a good refresher. Of course, the author notes that ma huang is more acrid and not sweet, thus more harsh, and......well, just read the book. Its worth the cash.

I have been looking for a way to study herbs so that they come alive. Studying single herbs in TCM school is usually just memorizing a big list. This book actually talks about how to use the herbs, and helps me differentiate very similar herbs. Also, it is conversational in tone and written/formatted in a way that's easy to digest. It is packed with valuable information and clinical insights, some you won't even find in Bensky, yet it is only 200+ pages. Too bad it's out of print. I bought it used--it's the most expensive book I bought but well worth it.

I was so lost in my first year of herbs trying to memorize each one in Bensky until I bought this book. What a life changer! It really helps a new student understand the herbs relationship to its category, meridians and tastes so it makes it VERY easy to understand why an herb does what it does. Wohoooo!! I get it!! FINALLY that aha moment!!

HASH(0x8bac1e1c) étoiles sur 5 great herbal comparisons 30 mars 2010

I found this book to be very useful at differentiating the various herbs within a category. I am a TCM practitioner, but feel that this book would be very valuable for the student as well as the professional. It is clear and concise. The explanations are thoughtful and useful, and the comparisons really help to narrow down exactly which herb would be the best choice when trying to create a formula (strength, taste, temp, etc). I have many herbal books, but I tend to turn to this one most frequently when really trying to understand what makes each herb stand out from the rest.
