5.0 étoiles sur 5 Christmas Threads...Heartwarming Christmas Romances! 13 septembre 2000

CHRISTMAS THREADS - The Christmas Cake.
I just bought the Inspirational Anthology CHRISTMAS THREADS, and decided to read the last novella in the anthology from Barbour, first. I was touched by the sweet story of newlyweds, Elizabeth and Joel Evans, who spend their first Christmas together in the small house they call home on the Nebraska prairie. Our heroine, Elizabeth, tries desperately to overcome the harsh winter and many other obstacles in order to bake a traditional holiday dessert for her husband. Will she be able to bring a little bit of a Boston Christmas to the Nebraska prairie? Will she find the ingredients to bake the holiday cake his family had been eating for years? Talented author, Janet Spaeth shows us her wonderful sense of humor throughout this loving Christmas novella. Along with a happy ending, she has included a wonderful recipe that I'm going to bake for my husband, even though it's not Christmas yet. Thank you, Janet for your emotional and humorous story...and for including the recipe! I can't wait to read the other three novellas in the anthology.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Everlasting Light by Andrea Boeshaar 9 août 2013

I had the pleasure of reading this charming novella today, all in one sitting. I love all things Civil War, which led me to this author. This is the first time I have read anything by Ms. Boeshaar, and I was pleasantly surprised by her attention to and accuracy with historical detail. She creates a wonderful heroine Alaina McKenna, the sweet, unspoiled daughter of a Columbia, SC farmer. The love of her life, her husband Braeden, has gone off to war and even months after Appomattox, she has heard nothing from him. Everyone assumes he has died, but her heart refuses to give up hope.

In a series of memories, the reader relives her past courtship before the war, her friendship with the sophisticated and yet sincere planter's daughter Jennifer Marie, and another suitor whose flame for her gets rekindled in her husband's absence. Set in the backdrop of the devastation of Columbia and the entire South, each character must face the despair and struggle with their faith to believe for hope again. Alaina must decide whether to wait against all common sense, or take the offer of marriage at hand. I found the theme of hope particularly spoke to my heart, as our family faces unemployment like so many others in this difficult economy. The angst was depicted in a very realistic way that frankly many happily ever after books lack. So the redemptive ending was that much more poignant for me.

"Everlasting Light" offers real hope in the face of disparaging circumstances, and comes highly recommended by this Civil War buff.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Not the best collection but good stories. 14 décembre 2012

My only complaint is that it is in that darned bigger size they are using so much now. So it is HEAVY -- way too heavy to carry in my purse. That's not the author's fault - that's the publisher and I just have a personal problem with these larger-sized books (thicker paper? and usually more expensive). Stories are good -- not spectacular but good stories.
