Thomas DePrima's writing reminds me of SciFi stories written back in the 1950's by the likes of Robert Heinlein, pure adventure and human experience. I highly recommend this novel.
P.S. and No you don't have to have read the Jenetta Carver AGU series in order to follow the story, but I think once you're done you'll want to get those too!
The character development and creative world building were continually engrossing, I just could not put this book down. I greedily gobbled up every morsel of the story but was disappointed once I reached the last page, solely because the story was so enjoyable, I wished this book would never end!
There was a perfect symmetry between action and adventure, moreover the battle tactics were interesting and clever. The protagonist was very likeable and all around brilliant.
I highly recommend this book and the Jenetta Carver series to fellow SF readers and I can't for the next book in this series; in addition, I also look forward to the next Jenetta Carver book due out December 2012.
To fellow dark urban fantasy readers who are looking for a good space opera but do not want to end up with a space romance, I also recommend these books to you.
I also recommend:
On Silver Wings (Warrior's Wings Book One)
The Hour of Dust and Ashes
Mutineer (Kris Longknife)
Mech 1: The Parent (Imperium Series)
Peacekeeper: A Major Ariane Kedros Novel
Along with our introduction to Sydnee, we are given a puzzle that adds to the main story.
It's a great guessing game that follows us along, never taking away from the story, just adding to her mystery.
A mystery that she herself has trouble wrapping her hands around.
It was pleasing to read about other species and worlds in DePrima's universe.
In one of his earlier books a situation was described where older ships were being brought back into service.
This book shows us the results of that effort.
I really like it when the events from one adventure affect the events from another adventure.
I it adds an element of progression that I like seeing from a series.
The ending of the book is very well done.
As the curtain closes on Sydnee's first story, I find myself standing up, clapping with all my heart, shouting "ENCORE! ENCORE! WHOOO!!!"
This is the first book in a series that occurs in "Galactic Alliance" universe. Lt(jg) Sydnee Marcola is ordered to the Galactic Alliance destroyer, Perry. It is a ship stationed in a supposed backwater border area of the Alliance. It is an older ship, brought out mothballs and manned by "losers". Needless to say, things quickly heat up, and the Perry finds itself in the middle of a revolution happening in an alien empire. Our young Lt(Jg) finds herself commanding a unit of Marines and has to step up to save her command. Great Space Opera and Military SciFi
