Revue de presse

"Gareth James does an amazing job diving deep in to what you truly need to know in order to successfully implement and deploy Citrix XenDesktop.  I highly recommend this book to anyone looking into and/or deploying XenDesktop.  5 Stars!"

- Douglas A. Brown, CEO and Founder DABCC, Inc., Microsoft MVP Windows Server, Citrix Technology Professional

Présentation de l'éditeur

Citrix XenDesktop Implementation explores the implementation of Citrix XenDesktop, a virtual desktop infrastructure solution. After introducing the desktop virtualization, the book discusses the installation of a desktop delivery controller through advanced XenDesktop Client Settings.
This book briefly discusses the work of desktop delivery controller mechanisms followed by its installation process, integration process of XenDesktop with Microsoft Active Directory, and the configuration of the desktop delivery controller. It then examines the process of installing the virtual desktop onto the server infrastructure, and it follows the installation and integration onto Xen Server, Hyper-V, and VMware hypervisors. Furthermore, it discusses the advanced configuration settings.
The book covers the installation of the Citrix Provisioning Server and its fundamental configuration. It also explores the configuration of Citrix XenApp for Application provisioning, the integration of virtual applications, and the implementation of virtual profiles into the virtual desktop. The book concludes by explaining the advanced XenDesktop client settings on audio, video, and peripherals.

    • Ideal one-stop handbook for implementing a Citrix XenDesktop virtual desktop solution
    • Includes all technical details required for you to evaluate how Citrix XenDesktop would integrate into your existing environment
    • Covers integration with VMware ESX/vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V including System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) and Citrix XenServer

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Book is great, but Citrix, Inc. can't sit still. 14 novembre 2011

If you thought your company runs your infrastructure, you could be mistaken if you don't voice your objections to software vendors having ADHD and can't keep their products steady for a year or two. This book is well written (Kudos), but already out-dated. Citrix, Inc. has good products, but IMHO they have lost focus to business production environments as they continually pump out entirely new versions, relabel old products to appear new, change all the furniture around, and threaten to retire entire product lines that businesses have in full production wrapped up in change control processes. The author did a fantastic job, but not even Citrix's internal training team can keep up with their releases. Templeton needs to stop the bus once in a while so people can get on, train, and snap on feature releases....stop with all the marketing and GUI changes! Citrix is showing their Microsoft Platinum colors.

This is a good book to use as an introductory guide to XenDesktop (covers version 4). It is not an in-depth technical treatise on the subject so don't expect that. It will definitely get you started with your XenDesktop implementation. My area of expertise is Citrix technologies so I found this book too basic and general as usual but it is a good resource for those who are just getting started. In all my years of working with Citrix products, there are no better resources than the Citrix guides, their support documents, forums and developer network. I have yet to see one single book on Citrix technologies that even comes close to offering any in-depth treatise except maybe Brian Madden's book on Metaframe XP Technical Design. I have started to write a book on Citrix several times and have been discouraged by the fact that I would have to leave a lot of details out. A great book on Citrix technologies aimed at high level administrators and engineers would have to include a wealth of information on Active Directory, Windows Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services, Windows internals, Citrix internals, etc. It would be a major project to actually come up with such a book. I would strongly recommend that you read all the Citrix guides, documentation, spend time reading the forums, the Citrix developer network, and set up your own test environment to practice and test with. There is no better way.

Disappointing as it is way out dated. The differences in the new releases of Citrix Technology really do make a significant difference to every example in this edition, as Citrix really does overhaul their technology.

    - XenDesktop 4.0, current is 5.6
    - Citrix Provisioning 5.1, current is 6.0
    - XenApp 5.0, current is 6.5

That being said, would love to see a new edition covering the current releases of the technology and a new release annually as the technology is moving awful fast when it comes to VDI. Then this would be a good volume to turn over to a new administrator unfamiliar with VDI implemented on XenDesktop.

The format is simple, quick read and designed to get the novice up to speed rather quickly and an excellent resource for a Project Manager or anyone who wants to understand what this new buzz of VDI is all about.

I did find a few areas where steps were missing that I personally perform in my VDI implementations, but I'm not a novice either. Such as put the paging file and the cache file on the device persistent disk drive.

Out of date it gets only 1 star.

I have done a number of Xendesktop implementations and wish I had this book early on, it would have saved me a lot of time through the trial and error process. Great step by step pictures explaining every process in the setup and implementation down to virtual profiles etc., I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to know more about a Xendesktop deployment.
