5.0 étoiles sur 5 I like it for several reasons 3 juillet 2016

This is the book my instructor uses as part of my classical guitar training. I like it for several reasons. First, as a slovenly rock freak, the Hal Leonard Classical Guitar (HLCG) has provided a painless was to learn to read musical notation. I know what you're thinking. "What? Me reading music? Ain't no way, dude!" Well, it works...I'm reading music for classical guitar. (!?) Next, the graduated exercises lead you through the essential (physical) skills you must master. Make no mistake: classical guitar is not a cake-walk. Important things are simple, but simple things are hard. There's a lot of repetitive practice to ingrain crucial muscle memory....but the goal is worth it and HLCG helps you get there. Finally, there are plenty of good songs for repertoire. As I heard somewhere, the whole point of playing a musical instrument is to *play songs*. Right now I'm learning Greensleeves and Malaguena...this is why we pay the price to learn guitar. Get the book. Read it. Work with it. Write notes in the margins. Get an instructor. Learn the art of classical guitar.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent book/method 1 mai 2013

I am four months into a decision to take up guitar as an adult. I had a musical background from previous work with the saxophone, which included some music theory and sight reading ability. My goal for the first year is to pick up through self-teaching some fluency in modern guitar rhythm and melody and some acquaintance with classical guitar. Accordingly I am working through two books - the Hal Leonard guitar method volume one, and the classical guitar method.

The classical guitar volume is more difficult, though it could serve as an introduction to the guitar for a dedicated individual. The strength of the book is graduated exercises that teach important skills and at the same time sound pleasant and musical and are interesting to play. I can play these exercises in the evening after the rest of the house has gone to sleep and receive only compliments the next morning.

I don't understand some peoples criticism in review about the lack of tablature - surely learning sight reading goes hand in hand with any form of classical study?

I purchased both the hardcopy and the kindle version. Initially I was enthralled by the kindle version - with embedded music, I travel a lot and the ability to be portable with both written music and audio tracks is very helpful to me. However, after some practice, I decided that the small font made site reading and playing the exercises too difficult. I now use the hard copy for practice, and the kindle version to play the accompanying tunes. In my opinion, care is needed in the way you approach the backing music. To me, the best way is to work through the pieces unaccompanied until a degree of fluency is established, then use the backing tracks. Even better is to practice the exercises with a metronome extensively first.

A very handy method for an adult playing interested in exploring classical guitar method, but there is plenty of work to do in this book. The great strength is that working through it will be rewarding and sound pleasant from the earliest pages.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good book for not-quite beginners. 22 décembre 2015

Again, a book I bought based on good reviews. And it is a very good book, with a nice CD to hear how even simple tunes can sound good when an expert plays them. Thing is, its really for beginners. I'm no maestro, but even after ten years without picking up a guitar I can sight read most of the pieces here. That said, some of them are lovely and, even being simple, its great to be able to play them along with Henry. Recommended for anyone just getting started with classical guitar or, like myself, getting back into it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Really like this. Written and laid out extremely well. better than most other guitar instructional books i've gone through 26 janvier 2017

Really liking this so far. I'm halfway through the book. I've been playing guitar for 2 years now. Gone through several books, written many songs, done many recordings. Classical guitar is teaching me new things that i haven't learned elsewhere...I really like what its doing to my guitar playing.

Paul Henry lays the course out in a nearly IMPECCABLE way. The instruction progresses so smoothly...its actually fun! Again, I really like this book and I highly recommend it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid book for beginners 14 novembre 2016

I'm half way through this beginner's book and I have found it to be quite helpful in my quest to learn to play classical guitar. I'm not a newcomer to guitar, but I am new to playing it in a classical style. This book presents a logical approach that has been quite manageable for me, practicing about 20 minutes per day. I recommend it. I would have given it 5 stars, but so many of the exercises sound alike, though they do teach you the material.
