Présentation de l'éditeur

MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO, ANOTHER RACE OF HUMANS LIVED HERE ON EARTH, LEAVING BEHIND POWERFUL ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY THAT COULD CAUSE OUR EXTINCTION.

Sudden freezing temperatures cause weather patterns to change for the worse and threaten a catastrophe that will affect the entire world.

Geologist Alex Cave leads a small band of volunteers on the high-tech research vessel named the Mystic in a desperate attempt to remedy the situation before civilization faces ecological disaster, but members of the group have their own agenda, seeking wealth and fame through murder and seduction.

Captain John Dieter’s greed blinds him to the suffering caused by the disastrous weather conditions, and he enlists the help of modern day pirates to capture the Mystic and take it to an unknown island in the Bering Sea, the supposed location of a vast horde of stolen treasure.

Alex begins a desperate race to find the Mystic, the only ship capable of finding the powerful alien artifact causing the sudden freezing temperatures. If he fails, the world will enter a new ice age that could last thousands of years.

How can Alex stop the world from entering a new Ice age?

Sometimes a book series leans heavily on prior books and subsequent books. In this series, book one is standalone, but book two leaves you with a cliff hanger, and you'll just have to wait for book three to get the entire epic adventure. Such is life, I totally enjoyed Dead Energy, and I totally enjoyed Cold Energy, regardless of the cliff hanger. At least with this one, we are likely to get book three within a year, which is a helluva lot better than the wait I've had with a number of other books in series.

It's a shame that some great stories like this go unnoticed while just about any subsequent books written by someone like Tom Clancy (may he rest in peace) get sold by the millions, even though the life is completely out of them. I would far rather read fresh material from a completely new author than read a rehash of the same theme, same thoughts, same materials we so often get from "famous" authors. Give James Corkill a try. His stories are fresh and original, and full of life. You won't regret it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "Adventure Doesn't Get Any Bigger Than This Novel" 5 janvier 2014

This is an amazing thriller which resembles a high-action, popular film. It's intense, suspenseful, and apocalyptic as the ocean becomes destined to destroy life on the surface of the world. A major seismic event has just been reported on Vancouver Island in Canada and also the San Juan Islands has been impacted.

Sharon Aniston of the U.S. Geological Service (USGS) refutes Charles Simons saying that what actually happened is not a major earthquake. The city of Victoria has almost all it's structures totally destroyed. Yachts in the harbor are smashed, tangled in rigging and masts. Bodies were being stacked in long rows upon crumbled streets. How could so much damage be done without even the event registering as an earthquake?

Sonja Hanspevin checks her computer map of the polar ice sheet, the warning light flashing that the ice layer has risen 200 meters in only 30 minutes. Sonja is flown over the tall clear ice sheet and is shocked to see dozens of pilot whales frozen inside. How could the water freeze so quickly? Sonja steps out of the helicopter to exchange the GPS device, her shoes become glued to the ice. The same thing happens to the helicopter runners ... they are trapped on the ice.

Mike Tanner, aboard his research vessel is testing a new ultrasound system capable of finding methane hydride, a compressed gas, only found in water molecules in deep water. It may be a new clean energy source. Lisa Harding is aboard the surfaced small submarine and confirms their projections, but advises the team of her surprising findings. The layer of methane below the sea has turned green and expanded in size, growing upward from a large crack in the ocean floor. Mike Tanner and Okana will take down the deep rover to investigate the bubbles rising into the methane. An explosive-like force slams into the rover and it tumbles end over end and settles into the muddy ocean floor.

Wesley Patterson gets another sizable disturbance on his seismic detector deep below the sleeping volcano, Mount Baker. He lives in a cabin below the mountain, studying the volcano for ten years. But this activity is coming from thousands of feet beneath the surface which could mean the awakening of the volcano to violent eruptions.

And now we have Alex Cave at Montana University in Bozeman being called in to assist and help the agencies discover the cause of the erratic seismic actions below the earth's surface which may result in extreme freezing temperatures on the surface -- events which mankind has never endured before.

This certainly is a fast-paced, high action novel of apocalyptic events, piracy, hidden treasure, discovery and surprises. Light your fire ... read this book!

First, I don't pretend to understand all the technical aspects of Mr. Corkill's books so I just go along for the ride and hope for a good story. In many ways this is better than the first one but it is very helpful to read Dead Energy (the first book in the series) before you get to this one. In fact, if you can stand it, buy the first one and this one and wait for the third before you start on them, because the story will flow smoother and you'll have the added benefit of not having to wait to find out "the rest of the story".
A couple of minor details - some of the dialog is a bit jerky and doesn't sound right, and for the second time Mr. Corkill introduces a female character who appears to be a bit flighty with her affections.
Do give this series a try. Unless Mr. Corkill suddenly tanks with his writing, his books will be on my "must read" list as he continues to bring us adventures.

I really enjoyed this book. It does fine as a stand alone book, though there are a few references to Dead Energy but you don't need to read it to enjoy the book.

Pros

Action
Suspense
intrigue
Adventure
Alien Technology

This really is not a science fiction book so much as it is a mystery thriller with advanced technology as a key plot item. I enjoyed it. Might just get the first one and the next one when it comes out. The book does set you up for the next mysterious part about this alien technology.
