HASH(0x98a3f3e4) étoiles sur 5 So Young, so bad to really appreciate this... 3 mars 2005
Par Jesmorh - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
It was 1978 when I first heard the album: Coliseum Rock. At the time I was amazed with groups like Yes, U.K., Queen, Styx and other bands to really appreciate the musical treasure that Starz was offering here. Now I can tell that this is a GEM, for long time, a hard to find GEM.

All the songs are really atractive and delightfull: the hypnotic opener So Young, So bad and songs like Take me, Where will It End or Outfit, shows the Hard/Pop side of the band with great musical hooks, hypnotic choruses with a sweet melodic treatment that make us feel joyfullness in more than a sense; like the first two albums of Boston, but with their own style.

It's A Riot, No Regrets, Last Night I Wrote A letter or the instrumental Coliseum Rock brings the Heavy side with strong vocals and powerfull riff guitars with solos that were the a distinctive landmark in the Starz Sound in seventies. This recording is a MUST for the Rock listeners! and I also recomend "Live At The El Mocambo", where you'll find the some of the better tracks of the Coliseum Rock album played live with great feel & emotion... Good Luck!

Starz were a way fun, cutting-edge hard rock band with balls and excellent musical chops, that should have been as big as KISS or Aerosmith. Growing up in North Jersey back in the 70's, I recall hearing Starz albums at many a high school parties nonetheless. Their popularity seemed regional in certain 'pockets' around the U.S. and they always seemed on the verge of 'making it big'. 'Coliseum Rock' was my first exposure to their hooky hard rock which influenced many 'platinum' hard rock musicians, Rikki Rockett and Nikki Sixx being just two of them admittedly who have mentioned being
Starz fans (and i'm sure many more)! Even as a then young, aspiring hard rock guitar player myself, I was greatly moved by Richie Ranno's awesome axework, along with other greats like Joe Perry/Brad Whitford, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Tony Iommi, Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth, Ace Frehley, JJ French, Mick Box, Matthias Jabs, 'Buck Dharma' Roeser, Robin Trower, Pat Travers, etc. etc. etc. I am ecstatic that this is finally out on CD, and the remastering quality sounds great to boot. If you like classic, influential hard rock, Starz belongs in your collection!

HASH(0x98a3f4a4) étoiles sur 5 Starz - An obscure rock band if ever there was one 15 juin 2005

Starz had 4 studio albums back in the late 1970's and then one rehashed release ("Requiem") of some live and unreleased tunes in 1995. Their debut "Starz" (1976) started off great with songs like "Detroit Girls", "Live Wire", and "Fallen Angel". They continued their brilliance with "Violator (1977). "Coliseum Rock" (1978) was the band's 3rd and last great release ("Attention Shoppers" was just plain bad). Michael Lee Smith's vocals never sounded better than here. Ritchie Ranno simply shredded on guitar. And, Joe X Dube was amazing on drums. This album rocks steady for the most part with a few rock ballads thrown in for good measure. This is easily my favorite Starz album... with great rock songs like "Take Me", "No Regrets", "It's A Riot", "Where Will It End", and the instrumental guitar (and feedback) song "Coliseum Rock". Perhaps their biggest hit here was "So Young, So Bad" - more of a pop song, though still a good tune, probably my least favorite on the album. Bad management or producer? No promotion? No idea why Starz didn't fare better... they deserved it. The 2 bonus tracks are taken from "Requiem" ("Vidi OD" and the ballad "You Called His Name") are absolutely worthless and deemed skippable. Starz peaked with "Coliseum Rock"... if you had to buy one of theirs - this is it - it still rocks 25+ years later! The album cover artwork is the best of their 4 original releases. Thank you Ryko for re-releasing these lost albums with remastered sound. Classic 70's rock & roll... great album.

HASH(0x98a3f39c) étoiles sur 5 Hands down, one of the best bands of the 70s 17 décembre 2008

The true un-sung two guitar band of the 70s. It can be debated, but Starz will always be, one of the best pomp, hard rocking acts of the 1970s. Ritchie Ranno and Brendon Harken to this day are two of my favorite guitarists. Michael Lee Smith, and amazing vocalist. Just great well writtne material, funny, satirical and in your face. Some songs even had a deep message for this time period. Coliseum Rock, is my favorite out of the 4. From beginning to end, every song is excellent. After you pick this up, go backwards in time and you will fall in love with the rest of their music. Violation should be next on your list, then Shoppers then Starz. And they were phenominal live. So, I know they are still touring here and there, when they come to your town, GO SEE THEM!
