Présentation de l'éditeur

<div>

Few American novelists of the twentieth century have stayed as modern as F. Scott Fitzgerald. He gave a name to his age, the Jazz Age , but his reputation has outlived it.

</div> <div>

Gathered here are the five novels he wrote in his relatively short career, together with a number of the many short stories he wrote between 1922 and his death in 1940. This Side of Paradise catapulted him to fame, its exposé of the manners and morals of a post-war generation becoming a cause célèbre. The Beautiful and Damned, a semi autobiographical moral parable of a doomed marriage, affirmed Fitzgerald s status as the spokesman for the generation of the 1920s. His third novel, The Great Gatsby, remains for many readers the definitive American novel of the twentieth century, its eponymous hero a complex fictional portrayal of a romantic imagination at the mercy of a corrupt reality. Tender is the Night is an American Vanity Fair set on the French Riviera in the 1920s. Fitzgerald was working on The Last Tycoon at his death in 1940, and many critics rank his account of Hollywood at the height of the studio system, even in its unfinished state, as comparable to the achievement of The Great Gatsby.

Biographie de l'auteur

Francis Scott (Key) Fitzgerald was born in St Paul, Minnesota in 1896. He was given three names after the writer of The Star Spangled Banner, to whom he was distantly related. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a Southern gentleman and failed businessman. His mother, Mary McQuillan, was the daughter of an Irish furniture wholesaler. In 1913 Fitzgerald went to Princeton University but did not graduate. Instead, he joined the army was discharged in 1919. During that time he met Zelda Sayre, who he married in 1920.

In the same year as his marriage, his first novel, This Side of Paradise, was published and became an instant success, enabling Fitzgerald and Zelda to pursue the decadent lifestyle they craved. In 1922 they moved to the affluent Long Island community of Great Neck, which provided Fitzgerald with the material for his novel, The Great Gatsby (1925). The book was well received by the critics but did not bring the financial rewards he had hoped for and in order to finance his extravagant lifestyle Fitzgerald wrote stories for various magazines. His published works include, Tender Is the Night (1934), The Diamond as Big as The Ritz (1922), The Beautiful and Damned (1922) and The Last Tycoon (1941)

During the next five years the Fitzgeralds travelled back and forth between Europe and America as they found Europe cheaper to live in. In 1930 Zelda suffered the first of many nervous breakdowns, and was hospitalized on a number of occasions both in Europe and America. Fitzgerald, meanwhile was drinking heavily. In 1937 he travelled to Hollywood where he met the gossip columnist, Sheila Graham, with whom he lived for the rest of his life. He died of a heart attack in her apartment on December 21st, 1940. Zelda died in a hospital fire in 1948.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Don't waste even 99 cents! 1 mars 2014

What a disappointment.......and pain in the neck! I did read the reviews, especially Michael Stodghill's. Obviously, he did not have the Kindle version of this book. And then there was the review that said they didn't know what the Kindle owners were complaining about. You can get a table of contents by tapping on the top of the page. Yeah, right. Mr. Stodghill said "the Great Gatsby" is in this collection. Nope. 99 cents isn't much but the aggravation is priceless. Don't buy this. I'm going to have to call Amazon on this and complain.
2.0 étoiles sur 5 KINDLE VERSION - MISSING ALL THE MASTERPIECES?! It DECEIT by seller not to warn us on CRUCIAL difference between printed version 10 février 2016

Woow, dissapointed that all the major novels are missing from the KINDLE edition?! Why not warning us that it radically differs the printed version?! This is very unfair and I'm thinking of canceling the buy.
So, be aware, that you actually miss "This Side of Paradise"(1920), "The Beautiful and Damned"(1922), "The Great Gatsby"(1925), "Tender is the Night"(1932) and the novel he was working on at the time of his death, the unfinished "The Last Tycoon"(1941).

additional regarding complies on missing Table of Content in the Kindle version, this is not true, it is available from Menu/GoTo and very well done

5.0 étoiles sur 5 ALL OF FITZGERALD NOVELS IN ONE BIG VOLUME 1 avril 2013
Par MICHAEL STONEHILL - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
I have been reading the novels and short stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald for many years and have enjoyed them very much, especially his short stories. Although he only wrote five novels and about 120 short stories(not counting the 17 Pat Hobby stories), it has been nearly impossible to find a stand alone hardcover volume that contained all five of those novels over the years and I had almost given up hope. I usually had to buy separate paperbacks of "The Great Gatsby" and other novels which eventually became worn or loaned out to friends never to return. That has all changed now with this beautiful hardcover edition from the Wordsworth Library Collection called "THE COLLECTED WORKS OF F. SCOTT FITZGERALD". Included in this 1455 page massive edition are all four novels that the author completed and published during his lifetime: "This Side of Paradise"(1920), "The Beautiful and Damned"(1922), "The Great Gatsby"(1925), "Tender is the Night"(1932) and the novel he was working on at the time of his death, the unfinished "The Last Tycoon"(1941). In addition to the above mentioned novels, this new Wordsworth Library Collection contains twenty-four of his short stories. Some of these short stories had appeared in the 1989 hardcover "The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald" edited by Matthew Bruccoli which brought together forty-three of his best known short works. This new Wordsworth Library Volume comes in a handsome blue hardcover binding with raised gold lettering on the front(Note: There is no dust jacket so handle with care) and keeps the same design as their previous volumes on such novelists as Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters and Lewis Carroll among others. There is a table of contents that lists the page number that each novel and short story starts. Wordsworth Library Editions is based in Great Britian but this volume is available from Amazon. I paid about $17.00 including shipping, which takes about 10 to 14 days to arrive. If you love F. Scott Fitzgerald and want to have a beautifully bound hardcover for your library then I highly recommend "The Collected Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald". You can check out other Wordsworth Editions on their website [...]
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great collection, but without contents 25 avril 2015

Thanks for posting such a great collection at the very affordable price. The only disadvantage I and many readers come across is the missing table of contents. Yet, it can be solved. To navigate (having the list of the novels and stories in mind, I use the central square button on my kindle (">" Forward or Back "<"), it allows a reader to go to the piece needed.
