HASH(0x9d615090) étoiles sur 5 A must have for anyone interested in or serious about color grading. 12 décembre 2013

As a professional colorist myself, working on well over a hundred hours of content a year, I'm just floored by the breadth and depth of this book. I have the first edition of Alexis' book and didn't hesitate to get the second edition. If you're looking to get familiar with world of color grading, this book is a must have.

The Color Correction Handbook 2nd Edition provides several things:

1. Provides the essential background theory you'll need to be knowledgable about color – physiological, psychological and technical information that's essential.

2. Gives you practical techniques across multiple platforms so you don't feel tied to just one application, but more so, nearly all of the techniques presented are portable to any application that you may work in where you need to adjust color and contrast.

3. It's so well organized! You'll read this book from beginning to end and then keep it on your desk as a reference manual. Need a tip about applying a window for localized contrast? Yep, those tips are easy to find and have real world practical applications.

4.Get your hands dirty with high quality footage available with the purchase of the book.

5. The Sidebars are awesome for those looking for sage advice from professional colorists or those looking to dive into technical aspects a bit further. In my opinion, the sidebars in each chapter are worth the price alone.

I've ordered but haven't received the companion to this book - The "Look Book" but I'm looking forward to that as well!

In summary, if you're interested in grading do yourself a favor and order this book! You'll discover something new each and every time you pick it up.

HASH(0x9d64dba0) étoiles sur 5 A good overall introduction 5 février 2014

After years of photography (including the "good old days" in the darkroom processing film and making prints), the fact that cameras come with good quality video options has led me to be more serious about video making. The inclusion of SpeedGrade in Adobe's CC subscription provided me with a tool to actually do some serious grading of that video... but how? I've dug into several resources, such as Adobe's Classroom in a Book for SpeedGrade, and now this book. As someone who is a novice to video grading, but experienced with photo "grading" this book did an excellent job covering all the basics from the point of view of digital video/film grading. It did a nice job of being application-agnostic, focusing on the fundamentals that all of these programs work on. I would strongly recommend it as a starting point for anyone interested in beginning grading or moving from rudimentary work to actually understanding what they are doing. The inclusion of SpeedGrade for Adobe subscribers and the availability of the powerful "Lite" version of DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic means that the tools to improve your video are easily available, and this book will get you from zero to having a good shot at turning basically good footage into fairly stunning images.

That said, I wish that the content from the author's companion "Look Book" was included with this one. I gladly would have paid more for one complete volume. This book covers the fundamentals, but the companion book covers how to turn base footage into more stylized imagery, such as various "film looks".

Whether new to color correction, or a pro - this book has so many nuggets of essential information that even with a strong working knowledge, it will be a fantastic asset when you need to reference something. It looks at different applications from FCPX to Davinci Resolve as well as a plethora of capture situations from DSLR and film cameras, as well as new cameras such as the Black Magic Cinema cameras.
It has links to work files and is seriously well crafted. Thank you Alexis. I'm a University film and video instructor and indie filmmaker, and I definitely endorse it.

HASH(0x9d655e40) étoiles sur 5 Amazing resource for those getting started 27 janvier 2014

As a new initiate to the world of video production, this book has been an invaluable resource. I've done cinematography and editing for a while but could never fully grasp what I needed to do to make my footage look that extra bit more special.

This book covers so much, from looking at the technical aspects of different codecs with regards to color and light information to the human eye and how we perceive scenes.

This is a must read if you want to take your quality to the next level. Easy to understand for a noob like me, yet plenty of advanced topics that really challenge you no matter what your level of expertise. This will be a permanent fixture in my color suite from now on!

Conversationally written, this is a colorist sharing his knowledge about everything in the production process. It tells what codecs allow how much color correction, what to consider in your editing suite, monitor selection, and the details about getting the desired results from your system. This book helps the shooter, editor, and the colorist at all levels from the beginner to the experienced.
