Présentation de l'éditeur

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Michael Prescott delivers a haunting story of fate, obsession, and murder in COMES THE DARK. Erica Garrison has long suspected her brother Robert of a terrible crime, but she has never sought proof, afraid of what she might find - until today. Now, in the secret underground caverns below the rural town of Barrow, Pennsylvania, she searches for the site of the childhood games she and Robert played - games that may have sparked a homicidal fascination that grips him to this day. And all the while her brother, and her past, are inexorably closing in ...

"A harrowing thriller of the first order. [Prescott's] character are flesh-and-blood real, the atmosphere's intense, and the plot races along unceasingly." - Jeffery Deaver

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly literate tale 1 mai 2014

You can read the plot description in other reviews. In this one I'd like to focus on the theme and background.

The main theme of this book is guilt and its punishments. All three primary characters -- Erica, Robert, and Ben -- hold themselves guilty for past actions and decisions. Their responses differ: one flees, another withdraws, the third suffers unending torments. Are these torments real? Are they psychosis? Can they be assuaged, and, if so, how? In fact, can guilt be assuaged and, if so, how? The three characters must face their guilt before they can move on, and if they cannot face their guilt, they cannot move on.

The book reaches back in a very literate way to the mythologies of the ancient and medieval worlds, contrasting them with current attitudes towards psychoses and mental illness. Anyone versed in ancient Greek and Roman mythologies will catch deep meaning in the apparent ramblings of Robert. Those who are particularly astute might understand clues to the underlying mystery, feel even more compassion for the victims of the story, and come away from the book with a deeper appreciation of the author and his craft in modernizing a very ancient tale.

I really enjoyed this book - I started reading it at the beginning of the weekend and could not put it down. I finished it Sunday night. It has been a long time since a book has held my attention like this one did. I don't want to reveal any of the plot which could spoil it for the next reader, but the only negative I could say is that there was a little TOO MUCH narrative on mythology. I would skim over the mythology stuff because I found it a little boring. There was very little about mythology that was actually relevant to the actual plot, so my skimming the boring stuff didn't hurt my understanding or my enjoyment of the plot. But other than this, the storyline was good and the action was great. I would highly recommend reading this book for enjoyment, if you like thrillers/mysteries. I really couldn't guess the strange twists and turns of the plot, which made this book a fun read over the weekend.

This book seemed to take forever to get to the point. I really like this author and I've read a LOT of his books - almost all of them 5 stars; definitely worth a read. The one complaint I have is about his grammar - he really needs an editor. Way too many contractions, it's distracting - like "she'd had never thought of this" or "they'd had been young when..."

But none of this will stop me from reading Prescott's books. They are almost always super-suspenseful and fun to read. I'm very happy to see another bunch of new books from him. Reading his books will keep me busy in the late evenings before I drift off to sleep!

Thank you Amazon for another really good, and inexpensive book!!!

The Family !! (ha ha) and what a family it is - Loved this story - Michael is such an amazing story teller, I was totally into this book.

Very suspenseful and very human, with human foibles and wickedness. The in depth look into a disturbed, broken mind with mythical reasoning and madness was the hook for me. If you enjoy a good chase, twists and turns and some very tense moments you will enjoy this read.

Something I realized while reading this book was that I no longer have to download samples of Michael Prescott's work - I just buy them. I usually do a sample of each book before I buy it, and had done so with my first few Prescott stories - no longer necessary!

I eagerly await the next story and I wanted to mention I truly appreciate the affordable pricing. When you read several books a week like I do, it adds up quickly! Thank you!!

I just finished Michael Prescott's "Comes the Dark." Once again, he creates an unforgettable female character that is highly intelligent, complicated, flawed and absolutely fascinating!! He excels at quickly pulling you into the center of his characters' lives and doesn't let go until you have read the last page, still wanting more. Between his characters and his plots, I consider him one of the very best writers of this genre and I eagerly await further books. After reading 19 of his novels, his stories and characters are still fresh and his twists and turns keep you glued to the action right up to the end. I loved the Tess/Abby series and would like to see him continue some of his other characters, as well. More, please!!
