Description du produit

Revue de presse

This comprehensive guide to understanding Asperger's Syndrome is easy to read. It has a very practical approach and will appeal to young people with Asperger's Syndrome, parents, carers and professionals alike. Understanding is helped by personal insights and practical strategies for those with AS and for carers too. For readers who do not have a lot of time there is a quick reference index to go straight to the aspect you want to know about first. Newcomers to the subject will find the glossary invaluable. If it whets your appetite there are 22 pages of references for further study and a section on further resources. --CaN! Wales Carers Network and Autism Academy Bulletin

This book really is a must-have resource for all academic libraries, college psychology classes, parents and relatives of those with AS, clinicians and medical professionals, teachers, and of course, those of us who have AS. --Autism Spectrum Quarterly

This is a very informative read which is aimed at not only the professionals, but also the parents, teachers and family members of those people suffering from Aspergers Sundrome. It will also serve as a comfort for those people who have either been diagnosed with AS or have an inkling that they might be on the spectrum as it details not only the symptoms but also coping mechanisms. Personally speaking, this was a comfort to me because I fell that I am on the spectrum somewhere and it's enough for me, now, to understand that...The language is never too technical, and has quotations from Hans Asperger (who first diagnosed the condition) as well as excerpts from Aspies themselves - which add another dimension to the book. As a first step into the world of Aspergers Sundrome this is a perfect start. It has a whole list of resources at the back for people, should they wish to take their reading further, including a list of websites as well. An informative read, I can not recommend this book highly enough.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). Now including a new introduction explaining the impact of DSM-5 on the diagnosis and approach to AS, it brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.

Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine:
* causes and indications of the syndrome
* the diagnosis and its effect on the individual
* theory of mind * the perception of emotions in self and others
* social interaction, including friendships
* long-term relationships
* teasing, bullying and mental health issues
* the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills
* career development.
There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.

Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.

'I usually say to the child, "Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome", and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking.' - from The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome

Dr. Attwood is the leading expert on Asperger's Syndrome (AS) which is the spectrum partner to autism. This book is, at the time of this review his most current work. It is a shining gem and one of the standouts in autism/Asperger's (a/A) literature. If you are on the a/A continuum or know somebody who is, this book is your best friend. You will refer to it many times.

What makes this book all the more excellent and distinct is that Dr. Attwood discusses adults on the a/A spectrum as well. Autism in its myriad forms including AS does not clear up once a person hits adulthood. If you have it, it is with you for the long haul. Dr. Attwood's book and words of wisdom help lighten the load.

I have bought several copies of this book and have kept one for myself and gave the others to professionals in dire need of it. This book deserves a place of high honor and no parent; professional; person on the spectrum; anybody involved with a person/people on the spectrum should go without this book.

I was delighted to see a section devoted to intersensory marriage, that is of a neurotypical (NT) person to somebody on the a/A continuum. I would like to see more coverage of this much needed topic as AS presents a wide array of social challenges. Still, it is heartwarming; uplifting and encouraging to see more information devoted to intersensory marriages.

I agree with other reviewers who say Dr. Attwood is the best - I think we should propose a toast and raise our glasses to Dr. Attwood!

I don't think you'll find a better book on Asperger's Syndrome available. However, I did give this to a "layperson" who was my friend without any background in this kind of stuff and they found it too complicated or in depth. Personally I thought it was great and accessible but if you're just starting out researching this stuff, DEFINITELY buy this book and then another introductory book as well.

I've read a lot of books since our diagnosis for our son, and this one did the best job. He can write for a parent to understand the syndrome, and most importantly to understand how your kid THINKS. Because they don't think like you do. That doesn't make them bad, or wrong, just different enough to need a translator. If your kid is lucky you'll stumble upon this book and learn about how your kid sees the world: what they notice, what they don't, what makes sense to them, and what doesn't.
It's a guidebook for those who love Aspies and want to help navigate them through life without shaming them, or making them feel bad about how they were born. My kid is much happier with a family who understands him and can help him make connections and who can intelligently explain how he's different to other people who haven't read this book. God bless Tony Attwood.
I buy this again and again to give away. It's that important.

I have read almost every book written by Tony Attwood and others throughout my seventeen years dealing with my Asperger's son. This book is the most comprehensive although it is a more difficult book to read. It does refer to study after study done since the early nighties. Legally, he must do this but foot notes would make it easier and less tedious to read. I have three college degrees and I found it a little frustrating to read. Now, I started reading around page 272 because I had already lived through the previous pages. He spends most of the chapters explaining what is happening to the Asperger's person than what to do to help them. You are left with deciding the ways to help them. If you are dealing with an Asperger's child, I suggest you read his earlier books, as well as other authors, along with this book. Tony is a wonderful speaker and if given the opportunity, attend one of his conferences. Now that I have read the book, I will pass it to his former school for Asperger's students only.

I have been fence sitting for over a decade as to whether my son might have Asperger's Syndrome. A good friend who had a son diagnosed with Asperger's suggested I read this book. She referred to it as the definitive resource on the subject. The book is a very good resource for parents of Asperger's children. It brings things into focus and can help educators also in helping these young people navigate not only their school years, but the world from their perspective.
