3.0 étoiles sur 5 Comments on Brandenburg Concerti only – they are mired in mediocrity 19 novembre 2015
Par jt52 - Publié sur Amazon.com
I only have the Brandenburg Concerti from this Andrew Parrott set and normally wouldn’t review a re-released set that includes the Suites which I haven’t heard. But I wanted to add a few comments because Amazon shoppers are faced with two wildly divergent evaluations so far, the negative one with the usual bunch of down-votes for critical opinions.

Well, I agree with the negative review. This is a mechanical and thoroughly mediocre version of JS Bach’s six famous Brandenburg Concerti from Parrott and the Taverner Players. The recording is not helped by a shallow sound engineering job with no trace of richness or depth.

The performance flaws involve Parrott’s typewriter-like presentation of Bach’s meter and rhythm as well as flawed playing by many of the individual Taverner Players. The orchestra’s technical weaknesses are exposed in the finale of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto, where the sections put the spotlight on the isolated groupings. There are ensemble problems, sloppy cut-offs and, over and above these problems, a general lack of finesse. The inexpressive and metronomic rhythmic aspect of the performance can be heard in the very beautiful opening movement of the 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. The rhythm punches along, nary a sign of expression anywhere. For example, the Vivaldi-like section (at 3’45”) is rushed through, the warm sound of the massed strings intended to provide a climax. In Parrott’s hands, it is done at mezzo forte with clinical metronomic precision.

These flaws all seem to exacerbate each other. The orchestral playing can be ragged and lacking in richness – this is compounded by the poor sonics. The Brandenburg Concerti, as fine as they are, can sound machine-lie – this is compounded by Parrott’s metric insensitivity. You can tell I didn’t like this recoding one bit. Not recommended. The Suites may be better but they’d need to be a whole lot superior to the Brandenburg Concerti to make this set worthwhile.

This is a great recording - especially the Brandenburg #2 with its incorrigibly insouciant trumpeter. If you're looking for a technically correct version, this isn't it. The Trumpter hits a few sharp notes, but the sheer exuberance of his performance earns your forgiveness forthwith. Lovely lovely version of some of Bach's most beautiful music.

I originally planned on giving this boxed set '2-stars', but decided to rate it with only 1 to offset any unrealistically high ratings. I was not pleased with these interpretations of both Bach's Brandenburgs and his Orchestral Suites. I am usually quite pleased with the work of Andrew Parrott, but not at all in this case. The Brandenburgs are played with too, too much zeal, almost with the same effect as with turning a music box's crank too quickly. The whole 4 CD set has a "squeeeky" quality to it. I think that the quality of Andrew Parrott ends with the works of J.S. Bach. He is excellent "from Monteverdi to Vivaldi" (The title of an exceptional boxed set of his), but not beyond. For both the Brandenburgs and the Orchestral Suites I give my highest recommendation to Christopher Hogwood.
