Présentation de l'éditeur

Because disagreements are common in our work and personal life, conflict is inevitable. The problem arises when this conflict escalates and people get hurt, either emotionally or physically.

When this occurs, unfortunately many of us break down and buckle under … or put up our dukes and prepare to fight. None of these gut-level reactions will solve the problem. What we need is an effective plan for transforming our approach to conflict.

This book reveals the time-tested strategies for managing conflict that have been taught within law enforcement agencies, hospitals, prisons, schools and businesses for more than three decades.

Here is just some of what you’ll learn:
- How to prevent disagreements from escalating to conflict
- The Five Maxims of human interaction
- How to effectively respond to pushback and verbal resistance
- Vistelar’s proven methodology for de-escalating conflict

I had the chance to read an advance copy of this excellent book on dealing with conflict. It really takes the teachings of Verbal Defense & Influence into the realm of day to day living. Ms. Mangold does this in an easy to read and informative manner. I would recommend this book to everyone who has to deal with conflict (and that is just about everyone on this planet) during their day. Road rage, rude people at the store, unruly kids, you name it and this book can help you deal with it.

HASH(0x9d184a2c) étoiles sur 5 Two thumbs up! 21 avril 2014

Confidence in Conflict earns "two thumbs up"! This book outlines tried and true ways of maintaining composure when under verbal stress or even verbal assault. The book provides reliable and repeatable ways of responding to verbal conflict--whether it be at home, in the workplace, or in the community.

As a community college professor with a PhD in Rhetoric, I'm particularly interested in this book from an instructor point of view. I know my students would benefit by including a book like this in my Communications classes. It would also be useful for any major at the college since no matter what field our students go into, they will experience some form of interpersonal conflict.

This book also has merit from a self-help perspective. Have you ever frozen up in a situation of verbal conflict and hours later realize what you could have said--but didn't because you froze up during the encounter? This book provides standard approaches of what you can say, particularly in difficult situations.

An example of a stressful situation in which a parent would benefit by using the techniques in this book would be how to approach your child's teacher about bullying taking place at school. Or, from the other side of things, what if you're the teacher being confronted by the parent of one of your students? How do you respond when the parent enters your office all worked up about what happened to her son or daughter in your class?

There are better and worse ways of responding to verbal conflict. The book outlines techniques I would have never thought of as persuasion techniques, such as active listening, including showing empathy by paraphrasing and asking questions.

The key component to the persuasion strategy described in the book is respect. Respect for the other is leveraged into compliance from the other. The book explains how maintaining an attitude of respect, even under duress, can lead you into a more healthful and rewarding life.

The "Showtime" mindset, a term actors are familiar with, can be an asset to your daily verbal performance as well. Check this book out. I particularly recommend it for parents. I wish I had it when my daughter was still in her teens. I could have used a handbook on how better to treat my family members, particularly when my buttons were being pushed. I would have been better off responding using the techniques outlined in this book and not reacting.

I believe we all experience conflict in our daily lives. A book like this is already making a positive difference in my outlook on life as well as in my ability to manage the inevitable daily conflicts. Maybe it can do the same for you.

HASH(0x9d185750) étoiles sur 5 Confidence in Conflict 16 avril 2014

As a professional who develops strategies and responses for conflict who deals with all ranges of from verbal exchange to physical life threatening situations. Kathy Mangold did an outstanding job in articulating the commutations sequence and breakdowns that occur between people you know, or from people you have never met before.
Confidence in Conflict presented a good understanding and outlining the framework and strategies of Verbal Defense and Influence developed by Gary T. Klugiewicz. Everything from the initial contact with a person explaining Showtime, to choosing your words wisely; to examples of how to deliver the words in the best representation possible. To include how important it is to read what is not said and the various non-verbal indicators that occur between two people.
Confidence in Conflict also highlighted the roles of bystanders in the immediate area who may take witness of a situation occurring and a critical understanding of a social contract that is made aware of prior to any incident occurring could alter the outcome.
The best thing I enjoyed about reading the book was the clear explaining of the simple sequence to follow during any given situation and identifying the responsibilities people have by providing those options and understanding others and how respond to them. I will make this a mandatory reading for several classes I teach to help them improve their future performance. “Outstanding Job!

HASH(0x9d185450) étoiles sur 5 A Must Read & Apply! 26 avril 2014

This book begins with the message that interpersonal conflict is inevitable. Disagreements, refusals, being told no, bullying, disrespect and other forms of conflict have been going on since the cave man and will continue. We can't end conflict so we need to know how to manage it.

The rest of the book shares the conflict-management tactics that have been taught to and used by professionals (e.g., police officers, health care workers, corporations, small businesses) for over three decades and explains how to apply them to everyday life.

It's a quick read and, surprisingly, loaded with new ideas. For example, in the chapter on listening, I assumed I'd get the same advice I've heard hundreds of times before - make eye contact, nod, take notes. Instead, the author explains how it’s important to go Beyond Active Listening and presents four tactics for doing so.

Other new ideas included the universal greeting, persuasion sequence and bystander mobilization tactics. I especially liked the chapter on how to treat people with dignity by showing them respect. Just yesterday, I applied one of the book's conflict-management tactics during a stressful interaction with a colleague that proved to be almost magical in its effectiveness.

Although conflict has been around since the beginning of the human race, it seems that it’s becoming more prevalent. This book fills a huge void by presenting practical advice on how to manage the conflict that will inevitably occur in everyone’s daily lives.

The message and methods are clear and each person can apply them to their own situations in the workplace, home or for random situations. We have! The method works extraordinary well in a personal, training and/or work situation.

Kathy Mangold provides straight forward strategies that I was able to immediately implement in my work, social and family life. As a school administrator, this book put into perspective the consequences of my actions and reactions and how easily I can control the outcomes of my relationships with co-workers, parents and students.
