2.0 étoiles sur 5 A long, long, long book 21 avril 2017

This book was exceedingly tedious in its minute details. It had more detail than I needed or wanted to be able to understand the story. For example: one guy comes to tell the Count that his fiance is dying. Eight pages of conversation later, he finally managed to get to the point. The story isn't bad and I would have enjoyed the "Readers Digest" version much better. If it weren't for the ending, I would have considered it a complete waste of my time. I will never read anything by Dumas again.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Annotated? Where? 11 mai 2014

Understand first that these two stars are not for the story. You already know it's a great story. Why else would we still be reading it over 150 years later? The stars are for this so-called "annotated edition." Great idea to add notes for modern readers! However, after having read about a third of the story, I've only seen three notes translating some French. Left untouched are obscure historical names, Latin phrases, or archaic words. Perhaps I was expecting too much? Indeed I can look these things up and have done so, but to call this an annotated edition requires the "willing suspension of disbelief."

Update: by text search I found 30 annotations.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Monte Cristo - It's good but... 3 octobre 2014

The Count of Monte Cristo is a fine book and this version is more than adequate. I paid 99 cents and that was worth it to me for the version. As for the story, Dumas's works are often lumped in with Hugo's (Les Mis, etc) since they cover a similar time period in French history (turn of century 1800's, post Revolution, etc). This review is mostly on the story.
1) Writing - if you like Hugo, you will appreciate that Dumas's style is a bit 'tighter' in that he doesn't go off on the tangents that Hugo does, however I found Hugo's plots and characters better.
2) Story - Monte Cristo is a tragic hero who was wronged in his youth and lost his liberty and love. The book follows him through his tragedy and trials in the first part of the book and then through his revenge. The beginning of the book through his escape from prison is very compelling. The book (for me) gets very boring in the middle. And the ending section (where he gets his revenge) is interesting again but pretty easy to figure out. It is no where near as good of a story as Hugo's Les Mis.
Overall I am glad I read it but do not think it is one of the best books of all time.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 This may be my favorite book of all time 6 octobre 2016

I read lots of contemporary novels and once in awhile I will take on a classic in order to change things up. This may be my favorite book of all time. The complexity of the book is amazing as Dumas takes the story from character to character. The book is not an easy undertaking as it takes some work to get through it but I don't regret the hours spent reading it. Probably won't revisit it for a few years as it isn't the type of novel you can pick up and read over a weekend, or at least I couldn't. However, I will read it again at a later date.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Worth classic status-absolutely loved it 18 septembre 2013

I read this on a Kindle and would highly recommend others to do so. The built in dictionary on the kindle helps to navigate through some of the words that are out of current language usage. I wish the translate feature worked, but maybe I just haven't figured it out yet. The plot is extremely well thought out. The book is a little wordy and conversational (not a distraction), but the author was paid per line.
