KICKS YOUR HIPPY A$$!!! 4 novembre 2002
Par hyena206 - Publié sur Amazon.com

Better than Time Travelling Blues (which was also rad.) The guitars and bass are a bit more fuzzed out, drums a little faster, and vocals more aggro thanks to the production of ex-Kyuss/Obsessed bassist Scott Reeder. Hey, even John Garcia sings on two of these songs (another star.) A nice cover of We Bite by the Misfits is near the end of the album. Basically, combines all the goods of Kyuss's Wretch (fast rocking and heavy jams) with the refined sound of And the Circus Leaves Town (perfect bass and guitar tones.) ...

Orange Goblin's first 3 albums revived my faith in modern bands to produce good stuff. As an old timer who still has the Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper LPs that first appeared when I was a teenager, OG was a welcome discovery after a decade or three of whiny, self-absorbed [junk].
However, Coup de Grace just doesn't grab me the way the first three albums did. I like every song on every other album, but for some reason I just haven't been able to get into this one. The rhythms seem more frantic yet less powerful, and the vocals step out in front of the music rather than blending in with it. IMO 'Red Web', and to some extent 'Stinkin O Gin' would be the only exceptions.
I know bands evolve, its a fact of life, but since there aren't any other reviews of this album, I thought I'd toss this out here and hope for a return to roots that aren't that old for these guys yet!

After Orange Goblin's first three stoner metal albums they decided to punk things up a bit, according to their liner notes. Boy, did they. "Coup De Grace" is just that: a real winner of a revved up rock and roll attitude without losing those gigantic single note riffs that are their trademark. Joe Hoare is an unsung guitar master, channeling Iommi and the best of all the classic heavy rockers into their own unique stew. Frankly, in this genre of what some call melodic metal, or retro, nobody else comes close. That Goblin finished first as Britain's favorite metal band of 2012 in "Terrorizer" magazine speaks volumes.
This album is a bit of a bridge between the heavy stoner leanings and the more super hard rock latter releases like "Healing Through Fire" and the latest "Eulogy For The Damned". It slams, moves faster than anything in their catalogue, and even includes a grungy nasty cover of Motorhead's "No Class".
Why these guys aren't world famous and giants in the touring arena is a mystery to me. For my money, they are simply the best of damn near everybody out there when it comes down to knowing how to be heavy and play real rock at the same time. Get every album they've done. Their stuff is that good.

HASH(0x9a8f9864) étoiles sur 5 Orange Goblin has changed...and it is good 17 septembre 2002
Par Patrick Kurz - Publié sur Amazon.com

This CD is definately of a more hardcore slant v.s. the old style, slower sludge metal. I'll admit that it was the psychedelic tracks of previous albums (particularly "Frequences..") that turned me onto this band in the first place. But I love this new CD..much better than the last one, Big Black. The John Garcia (of Kyuss) tracks are just icing on the cake. This is a fantastic CD, but dont be looking for the psycho-stoner rock of before..this is a much more aggresive sound for them...and it is good. Enjoy!

I've never really gotten into this album, despite coming back to it many times trying to do so. I loved the groove of Time Travelling Blues, the spacey jams on Frequencies and The Big Black, and Thieving is simply the greatest hard rock album since the turn of the new millenium. This one however... not so much.

It has it's moments, noticeably the monumental riff on 'Getting High on the Bad Times' and 'Stinkin O' Gin' is a terffic closer but besides that, the album doesn't have the variety of some of their others and many songs seem to remind you of the ones you heard a moment ago. The playing is tight, the production is good (hat-tip to Scott Reeder) and the artwork is something else but on the whole, nowhere near their best effort. Punk fans may even find something for them. If you're new to the Goblins, get 'The Big Black' or 'Thieving From the House of God' as both are stunning. Make this one your last purchase from their catalogue.
