High points: Good paper stock, fair price, a simple and clean design, Bolland's comments for the spolighted covers are great, the Sgt. Rock art under the Dust Cover is Very Powerful (I didn't know this one before).
Low points: Does not have all Bolland's covers (the New Titans and Secret Origins ones are out), some covers are blurred without explanation, most of the covers are presented in thumbnails, these thumbnails does not present good resolution for the colors, some covers does not present the clean art (are only reproduction of the cover that you already have in your comic collection).
The dust cover tells that it contains "over 200 works". So with a book with over 200 pages, I think it would be manageble that more cover were presented full size.
So, the low points are related to the editorial side. But Bolland's comments redeem the book.
If you're a Brian Bolland fan and purchased Image's THE ART OF BRIAN BOLLAND several years ago,
you already have the "best" of Mr. B. Thick at a plus-300 pages, it treated us to an overview of
the man's career from his Titan days to his DC paydays. Wonderful examples of his art (lotsa Judge Dredd, lotsa fine line work), along with
inciteful comments about where he was, what he was thinking about and esp. how he viewed
his developing style. This was the "primo" Bolland art volume; it remains the Grail for Bolland devotees.
DC's THE ART OF BRIAN BOLLAND is an ancillary volume: nice to have, but... We're presented with his
ANIMAL MAN covers (not all), along with a lot of other stuff of varying interest. Mr. Bolland's comments
- particularly his thoughts about DC - round out our picture of the artist.
Volumes like the DC book are nice additions to the bookshelf, to be savored on a rainy night
(what? it no longer rains regularly in the United States? or snows??? ah well, nothing is perfect).
This book is for the Bolland completist only - like me, I guess.
Hey, guys: why not give us a thick, weighty tome: THE COMPLETE ART OF BRIAN BOLLAND?
Now that would be worth its weight in PayPal.
