Présentation de l'éditeur

Recently serialised at Buddy Guy's Blues and Music

'a touching and soulful story' Jed Tales, Amazon reviewer

'sharply observed, witty, and often hilarious' Jimston, Amazon reviewer

They woke up this morning...

Famous Texas bluesman Coyote Jack has agreed to join The Bluebirds for a one night gig at their UK home venue. Freshly dumped by his fiancee, singer Charlie French hopes that this is the start of bigger and better things for him and his friends. Alas, the band's blues have only just begun. A series of misfortunes threatens to clip the Bluebirds' wings, and as their eccentric guest staggers from one embarrassing calamity to the next Coyote Jack's credibility is called into question.

Have mercy! - it's not the Texan's fault. The airline lost his damn guitar, the Stetson wouldn't fit in his luggage, these middle class white kids don't know diddly about the's no wonder old Coyote's flustered. Right?

There’s another problem. Charlie’s band – and therefore Charlie’s world - is about to fall apart. Guitarist and old friend Rupert Rathwell-Stubbs is secretly plotting his escape from the Bluebirds, his place among top London act The Molten Few assured if he can pull off one final betrayal of his friends. The demands of motherhood have been proving too much for bass player Anne Marie Pinto, and now the discovery of her husband’s infidelity is about to knock her flat. Unaware of his role in Rupert’s devious designs drummer Oz Watkins awakes smitten with his latest conquest, achingly aware that she’s fallen for the Rock God he no longer wants to be.

The blues, the real blues, are about to hit the Bluebirds. Hard.

Spanning a single Saturday afternoon and culminating in a riotous musical climax the novel traces the disintegration of the band and the gradual unmasking - and redemption - of the clownish Coyote Jack. Forced to face their respective truths the Bluebirds find themselves struggling to make sense of their lives, their loyalties and the blues itself as the clock ticks down and a full house gathers…

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice work... 14 avril 2013

This is a warm, witty, engaging read which has kept me company a bit like a group of old friends over the past week, and I'm already missing them! The authors brings to life a diverse range of voices in a narrative which keeps you hooked until the final pages. On the surface, it's about music and performance, but it's also an intelligent and profound reflection on love and resilience and betrayal and and flights of fancy and identity and acceptance. The author's music ear clearly extends to dialogue, which is beautifully rendered, and the female characters were, in my opinion, particularly powerful.

More, please!

This is a warm and engaging read, which is also highly amusing! That's not to say the book is not without it's drama, as the whole piece builds to a wonderful crashing crescendo of stories. A great read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A character-driven snapshot of a blues band, beautifully rendered 4 janvier 2014

This book has no plot. It takes place over about 20 hours, from the arrival on the English channel island of Jersey of the Texan blues singer Coyote Jack to his departure the next day. Jack has contracted to perform with a local blues band, the Bluebirds.
The tale follows each of the Bluebirds (Charlie, Oz,Rupert, and Anne Marie) through the life crises triggered by the imminent performance as well as through the angst of the pub owner where the performance is to take place. And of course, there's Coyote Jack!
Each character is a complete living and breathing entity and their interactions (helpful and hurtful alike) cram the pages of this book till it's impossible to put down.
The spell-check made a few serious mistakes but the yarn is excellent, once you stop looking for some earth-shattering thing to happen!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A paean to live music 28 mai 2013

"It was a full house--it was always going to be--they've done it!" So begins this paean to the art of live blues music, as Coyote Jack and his new band, the Bluebirds whip the crowd into a frenzy. Or at least, in Charlie and his Bluebirds' dreams...

The music business is known for chewing up young artists and spitting them out. Even when they get a contract, it often fails to turn them a profit. So, the ambitious young musician who tries to realise his dream is a great premise for a story, and Paul Bisson's novel delivers on this promise. I recommend it to anyone at all, but especially those who love the blues. If you've ever cranked up a record by BB King, or tried to emulate the great Buddy Guy on drums, you'll find much to love in "Coyote Jack and the Bluebirds".

I guess I have lesbian tastes in music, seeing that Eric Clapton is probably my favorite alltime performer. Have never really been a fan of the true blues, but I absolutely LOVED this book. What a great surprise, and THANK YOU!
