2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not a good source for cookie recipes 24 février 2011

I bought this book after reading a previous reviewer rave about it being filled with cookies from their youth. I did not find any cookies in this book that was made by my mom or grandma growing up. It was filled with pretentious cookies and lengthy descriptions of proper baking and decorating. The only way I can guess there are 300 cookie recipes in this book are with the recommendations at the end of each recipe suggesting what other ingredients you could use (such as pecans instead of walnuts or different cereals to use in the cereal cookies). To me it is still one single recipe. Also, I don't consider cheesecake bites to be cookies, which there are at least three recipes for in the book. If you are looking for a book with with a variety of cookie recipes, look elsewhere!

I originally got this book so I could try the recipe for Oatmeal Raisin cookies on page 82. I have never been able to find a good recipe for oatmeal raisin, but now I have. I love these cookies and they were super easy to make. In all, I have made three recipes from this book:
The Cinnamon swirls on page 51 are to die for. They are so delicious and not to difficult to make. My frosting didn't turn on as smooth as in the picture, but the cream cheese frosting on page 275 is really good.
The Mint Chocolate Creams on page 71 were also very good, but not minty enough for me. I also made the Mint Cream into frosting by adding more liquid so I could pipe it on top of the cookies. I can't wait to try out more recipes from this book. I do agree that the type face could have been chosen a bit more wisely. Those fours sure are hard to read.

Since last year I have made multiple recipes from this book. In general, I have found it easiest to follow the recipe exactly and trust that it will work. There is only one cookie this didn't work for: the Pecan Molasses Spice Cookies on p 223. I needed to add about 2.5 cups more flour, but once I did, they were divine. I have also successfully made Maple Walnut Cookies (p. 220), Sunflower Carrot Cookies (p. 205), Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies (p. 72), Toffee Chip Cookies (p. 75), Brownie Cookies (p. 78), Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Cookies (p. 79), Sugar-Free Carob Oatmeal Clusters (p. 83), and Butterscotch Icebox Cookies (p. 92).

The main typos in this recipe book have to do with the approximation of how many cookies would make one batch. For example, The Peanut Butter cookies claim to make 18 2-inch cookies. I made 1-inch cookies and came out with about 70 cookies instead of the 36 I assumed I would make. It's still an awesome book with great recipes. I changed my star value to five stars because all the recipes I've made have turned out and tasted great. Yum!

This book seems to be very organized and beautifully executed. It has pictures for almost every cookie that you are making the exceptions probably are the variations.
There are 6 chapters in this book.

Chapter 1: Cookies in the Know~ basically equipment and tricks for all cookies in the book.
Chapter 2: Everyday cookies~ cookies and bars that are fairly easy to bake.
Chapter 3: Party cookies~ gourmet and tea cookies that look like great eye candies.
Chapter 4: Occasion cookies~ meaning like for specific events like weddings and showers or birthdays. I think that this are was my favorite!
Chapter 5: Holiday cookies~ just what it says. There are roll outs and pinwheels and nicely decorated (not with just icing) cookies.
Chapter 6: Christmas~ includes gingerbread houses and international cookies. great photos!
Then at the end of the book are a couple of pages of basics and templates.

To me this is the best cookie book buy for me of the year and I don't think that I will be buying another one for several years unless I buy it from this author. Great looking cookies and seemly easy directions. This is my kind of book, because it has all the resources in one book. I would definitely recommend this to my friends! By the way if you didn't know in this review after every chapter it was my synopsis of the chapter not the author's. I hope you find this book as good as I did!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Many good recipes but confusing layout 18 mars 2011

This book has a lot of worthwhile, unique recipes and for that, it is worth getting. That said, the organization of the book is not at all intuitive to me, and with 300 recipes, they should be easier to find. It's difficult to know what the difference is between "dinner party cookies" and "cocktail party cookies" and the recipes all run together in the pages, making it even more confusing.
