Revue de presse

Katharine Stewart's narrative style... is delightfully engaging, her prose almost conversational. The reader, like a house guest, has little chance but to become wholeheartedly involved. --Topical Books

Présentation de l'éditeur

A real classic among Highland books, "A Croft in the Hills" captures, in simple, moving descriptions, what it was really like trying to make a living out of a hill croft fifty years ago. A couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, immerse themselves in the practicalities of looking after sheep, cattle and hens, mending fences, baking bread and surviving the worst that Scottish winters can throw at them.

I really enjoyed the story of a couple who left the city to run a croft in the north of Scotland. The good times and the hardships were really interesting.

When you read this story you almost feel like you are right there in the garden with her. She lives alone now as her husband has passed away and her daughter is married. Scotland must be an enchanting place to visit and it sounds like a lovely slice of heaven with all the way of life. I suspect that much of the grand old traditions are slowly dying out but she manages to give you some idea about that life. You can hear the rain, walk across the hills, sit by the fire and be right in her world. It is written over a year's time and gives you a clear idea of the weather, what grows and sometimes doesn't. I found it a thoroughly delightful read and I recommend it to you - it lets you get away from the every day hubbub and slow down right in your own chair.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a great read. I envied her taking the chance to live the dream. I actually live in the countryside myself here in Ireland and grow my own veg and so forth. But it's nothing on the scale of this woman and at a time when life was total hardship. The descriptions of countryside and life and the people was fantastic. I was totally absorbed and read it in two days.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful memoir 8 février 2016

It was a humbling experience reading this memoir. I love reading about peoples passions. Reading about Katharine Stewarts passion and plunge into trying to make a living out of a hill croft (near Loch Ness) was wonderful. The joys, but also the hardships that she, her husband and their daughter went through.

Katharine Stewart writes beautifully. I often went back to passages so that I could absorb them. What shines throughout the whole book is the joy in living even when things were not working out the way they planned.

In a world where we all seem to have too much, the author could make me feel the happiness at coming home to a warm house on a freezing day and eating a scrumptious dinner of scrambled eggs. She also showed the comfort of knowing that ones neighbor will be there to help--not that she expected it, but that it was the way things were done.

Very much recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Excellent Katherine Stewart book. 11 octobre 2005

A Croft in the Hills is a must read book for anyone interested in the highland crofting way of life. Writing with vivid memory and great skill, Katherine Stewart draws on her many many years working a croft, and infuses the text with a passion and interest which keeps you turning the pages, something which is a rare commodity in many books these days. An incredible woman, now at the age of 92, she is still writing and publishing books full of life and much gathered wisdom. Top class.
