Revue de presse

"This major monument to a groundbreaking curator provides evidence of how Rubin's vision shapes our view of modern art." — Library Journal

"Here we see Rubin as a lustful, vigilant hunter with a keen eye, a diplomat who brokered art deals with Russia during the Cold War, and a consummate businessman who instigated the advantageous though controversial process of taking sealed bids from dealers when selling works of art. Interwoven with detailed stories of how, for how much and from whom Rubin acquired artworks are his personal tastes, honest opinions and passionate descriptions." — Bloomberg News --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Relié .

Présentation de l'éditeur

The landmark memoir of the pioneering curator who built MoMA's world-famous collections of painting and sculpture. A brilliant curator, critic, collector, and teacher, William Rubin was tenacious, energetic, and extraordinarily successful at acquiring masterpieces of modern painting and sculpture and mounting such exhibitions as the fabled Picasso: A Retrospective during his tenure as Head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA. This memoir, magnificently illustrated with colour plates of nearly 250 of Rubin's most famous acquisitions, is a testament to that achievement. From Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse, to Pollock, de Kooning and Rothko, the range and depth of the works made an undeniable impact on the Museum and the world of modern art itself. Alongside the images is Rubin's memoir of his life as a collector and curator, his apprenticeship under Alfred Barr, the organizing of MoMA's groundbreaking exhibitions, the acquisitions of such masterpieces as Picasso's 'Guitar' and Jackson Pollock's 'One' and his relationships with top collectors Sidney Janis and Ronald Lauder. The book concludes with his erudite art history lectures presented at Sotheby's in 1997-8. For anyone interested in the history and world of modern art, in connoisseurship and collecting and in art scholarship, this book is truly an event and utterly indispensable.

A big, heavy volume that should be read by: 1) all interested in The Museum of Modern Art in New York City; 2) all interested in how much of this great museum's collection of paintings was assembled; and 3) all interested in the best of European and American art and artists of the last 125 years.

I especially enjoyed the eight lectures located at the back of this book, which were given by William Rubin in the late 1990s. They provide a clear, interesting, and enduring introductory exploration of the art of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

There are times, early in this book, when the reader may think Mr. Rubin was simply a courtier who knew the right rich people (mostly high-society museum trustees) and who ingratiated himself with them to obtain their treasures. But, after the book has been read in its entirety, no one can contest the value of the cultural treasures Mr. Rubin secured for his museum. And no one, based on his lectures, can challenge his stature as an art expert and educator of the highest order. And, lastly, no one can question the sincerity of the life he led in service to great art and The Museum of Modern Art.

The many art plates displayed within this book are of the best quality.

I purchased this hefty volume with lowish expectations-the concept did not seem wildly appealing. I am pleased to report that this book should thrill any modern art lover interested in the world of collecting and the New York art scene at the time when Rubin was head of MOMA's painting and sculpture collection (1967-88).

The book is divided into 3 sections. Firstly there is a fascinating description of how Rubin cajoled, charmed and manipulated potential donors of great art works to donate them to MOMA. There is a lot of name dropping of many rich and famous Americans-how I envy Rubin's interesting job! The second section consists of large sized and high quality color reproductions of 238 of the major acquisitions Rubin was involved with. These choice works are discussed in the first section and are handy to refer to. The third section of the book consists of the text of eight lectures on the origins of modernism given by Rubin. They cover subjects such as Cezanne and impressionism. Lucid and very informative.

The printing quality of this book is excellent and despite its high price, it comes highly recommended. Given a recent visit to MOMA which was virtually ruined by vast and often unruly crowds (how they allow unrestricted photographing is a mystery to me), it was a pleasure to be able to contemplate good reproductions of some of their treasured possessions in the peace and quiet of my own home!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The quintessential museum curator 25 août 2012

Along with Alfred Barr and Kirk Varnedoe, William Rubin was one of the masterminds of what today is the greatest modern art collection in the world. This book pays homage to his long career at the museum, to his far-sighted acquisitions and to his gift at forging long-standing relationships with artists as well as private collectors. The text is full of little-known anecdotes and stories, many of which ended up with major acquisitions (such as the courting of Picasso which led to his gift of the famous guitar sculpture, a landmark of modern art) and wonderful full-page illustrations. Especially interesting are the little-known photographs of Rubin's Manhattan loft in the 1960's, overflowing with works by the likes of Rothko, Newman, and Pollock.

A major addition tho the literature on the forming of the Moma collection which I highly recommend.

Very interesting review to comprehend the story of how paintings evolve inside a museum. Helped me more to appreciate and understand the journey of art works.

if you are interested in art history - this is your chance for a BFA without going to class! The reprinted lectures at the end of the book are fantastic - its only too bad there weren't more of his lectures reprinted,
