Présentation de l'éditeur

First performed at Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre, the first stage play from the SUNDAY TIMES No.1 bestselling author of SAINTS OF THE SHADOW BIBLE.

It's been 25 years since Alfred Chalmers was convicted of the gruesome murder of four young women in Edinburgh. Isobel McArthur, Scotland's first Chief Constable, was the woman responsible for putting him behind bars, but the case has haunted her ever since.

Now, with her retirement approaching, McArthur decides the time has come for answers. To uncover the truth, she revisits the case and interviews Chalmers for the first time in decades. But her decision rips opens old wounds and McArthur is soon caught up in a web of corruption, psychological mind-games and deceit that threatens not only her own life, but those of her fellow officers and even her own daughter.

Tense, gritty and hard-hitting, DARK ROAD is the first ever stage play from bestselling crime writer Ian Rankin, co-written by the Royal Lyceum's Artistic Director Mark Thomson.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 This play script doesn't even feel much like Rankin 28 juillet 2014

Like others who've posted, I blithely pre-ordered the ebook on the basis it was Rankin and without noticing I was buying a play, not a novel. I blamed myself when I opened the thing and started to read.

Having said that, the afterword "Ian Rankin and Mark Thomson in Conversation with..." a theatre spokesperson details why the play didn't even much feel like Rankin: he "...storyboarded the play and delineated the main characters, I left it to Mark to write the dialogue." I think that explains why this play, on paper, doesn't give me a sense of Rankin's touch with character. The play is mostly dialogue and the dialogue isn't his.

The script may have been brilliantly staged--I wasn't there to see--but it is a middling read, at best.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Very disappointed 29 juillet 2014

Very disappointing, a lot of waffle, may be ok if you are interested in how plays are written, but a waste of time if you just want to enjoy a good book like I do. I've read & enjoyed just about all of Ian Rankin's books, but this one is not worth the paper it's printed on, and certainly not what I paid for as a Kindle edition. Whilst the play might be good, the book is a huge let down and definitely not recommended.

Whether this product will be enjoyed depends strongly on the rationale of purchase. If you're a fan of the play and simply wish to own a copy of the script, then obviously this is all for you.

If like me you have not nor are likely to see the play, the script itself is passable, although one spends the entire time wondering how well the characters would be acted as opposed to truly enjoying the story. Luckily the 'book' comes with an intro from the writers, a pair of interviews, and a behind the scenes journal which will satisfy fans of the play, and readers who want some form of material from Rankin to immerse themselves within.

In total, Dark Road is a welcome brief diversion - an intriguing insight into the creation of a crime-thriller stage-play, and recommended for fans of the author.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A warning-- not a review! 25 juillet 2014

I saw that there was a new Rankin book on Amazon UK site, and I bought one assuming it was a novel. Shame on me-- it's a play. I really want to read a novel, not a play. I'm taking a huge loss to resell it just to move it on. Maybe it's a great play, maybe not-- but again-- I just don't want to read a play. Giving it three stars, because I haven't read it and can't blame Rankin for my stupidity (and have to give it *some* stars ;-)

Written as a play with dialogue direction. Very off- putting. Not the way I want to read a story. Didn't find much depth to the characters . Love Ian Rankin's books but not this. For me it didn't work and if I had realized it was presented like this wouldn't have bought it.
