Danger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific…
Since her rocky childhood and its abrupt, brutal ending, schoolteacher Anna Silver hasn’t given her trust easily. But when her estranged father gets in over his head—again—and winds up dead, his last message to Anna is as clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and with her father’s killer on her trail, Anna flees to what she hopes is safety.
Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent Carver’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her protection…just as he can’t deny his attraction to the independent beauty. As their passion sparks into flame, the perfect storm brews off the coast of his island home, bringing with it a sadistic killer hunting Anna and the secrets she’s come close to uncovering.

When Davis Silver discovered his employer was moving large sums of money out of the charitable foundation where he worked, he moved it and mailed the account information to his daughter, Anna, an elementary school teacher in Chicago. But to which address? Her home, the school, her mother's home in Vancouver, her grandmother's home that was left to Anna? Anna doesn't know, and neither do the merc assassins that are desperately trying to find her and the sixty million dollars her father took from them.
If you've read to young children you're no doubt familiar with the eager voice that asks you to "read that one again, Mommy, puhleeze...!!" And if you're a voracious reader like me, you've run across the odd book over the years that you wish didn't have to end, and you tell yourself "maybe I'll read this one again some day" because you enjoyed it so much the first time.
That's this book for me.
I've fallen big-time for Toni Anderson's storytelling; thoroughly enjoyed every one of her books so far. They capture my attention so well at times I forget I'm reading---I certainly completely lose all awareness of the staging of the characters, the development of the plot or the structure of the story, and that's unusual for me.
When it comes to reading romance, I look for the author who can make me fall in love with the characters, not just have them fall for each other. When it comes to suspense, I want a story that's believable, where the action springs from the development of the characters and where I'm so invested in the outcome I don't want to put the book down, until it's resolved. Toni Anderson does all of that, seamlessly, so that you're unaware of the hard work behind the writing.
I finished the story in one sitting, in the wee hours of the morning two days ago. It didn't finish with me. It's taken on a life of it's own and I keep thinking about what my three year old son used to call "all sorts of wonderful things"---everything from whale sighting, to prison life, to gardening, and "what CAN you tell about a person by their kiss?", to mention just a few--- generated by the telling of this tale. And for the first time in forty eight years, I picked a book back up and started reading it all over again.
If you want a good story, told by a wonderful storyteller, pick this book up, and then, if you haven't read her other books....
Anna has been through so much and still has confidence not only in herself but those around her. Most would have fallen and let the world take over. Anna is a very strong character who grows through out the book to become a women she can be proud of. She refuses to become a victim but take the bull by the horn as she is in a race for not only her life but others she holds dear as she tries to find the clues to who killed her father before they find and kill her.
Brent is pulled into the fast pace suspense when his friend sends his daughter to him for safe keeping as he falls to his death. He works through the clues as he races to keep his best friends daughter alive and prove her father is innocent. Brent is a strong character who would do anything for those he loves as he has done in the past. He is hiding from the world but all that is about to change with one women who rocks his world in more ways than one.
Both Anna and Brent have a very painful past they want to forget but can never forgive themselves or others. They learn to grow into wonderful characters and come to realize that sometimes you have to do what you have to do but this does not make you a bad person. You need to grab life and live it like there is no tomorrow as these who wonderful characters find out.
Toni is one of my favorite authors who grabs you from the first page with thrills and suspense you do not want to put her books down. The things I love about this story is the characters they must forgive themselves, learn to become the people the need to be as well as letting others in their life. We have no control of those around us we can only do as we feel is best and hope for the best. Mistakes might be made but that does not make us bad, we pay the price and learn but in most cases we would do it all the same again because of those we love as Brent found out. I loved watching these character develop as only Toni can do.
Toni always has me so into her writing as her narrators gives me chills with her telling of the story. Emily Beresford is an outstanding narrator who has a smooth voice with such passion. She brings so much to her audio's that you can feel the pain of each character.
Between the two you never know what is coming next and are always surprised at what Toni has in store for you. She gives you a pretty clean read with lots of steamy passion, two characters have a strong pull and attraction which is written in a way that compliments the story. You feel you are part of it as the author gives her characters meaning and makes two worlds right again. I have been hook on Toni as an author since the first audio of hers I listened to. She knows how to keep you on the edge as she pulls you in and keeps you hanging. I know Toni will always give me an outstanding read of suspense, and excitement that will get my heart pumping with thrills as she takes me on a wild ride of who done it and why.
Schoolteacher Anna Silver doesn’t give her trust easily. But when her estranged father uncovers a money laundering scheme and winds up dead, she finds herself on the run, desperate to stay one step ahead of his murderer. His last message to her is as clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and a killer on her trail, Anna flees to the coastal town of Bamfield in search of her father’s ex-cellmate and what she hopes is safety. But when she finds Brent, she discovers he’s not the kind, elderly artist she had pictured but a dangerously hot alpha male with blood on his hands.
Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. But loyal to the core, he would never turn Anna away when she comes seeking his help. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her his protection … just as he can’t deny the attraction he struggles to keep in check. But as their passion blazes out of control, the perfect storm brews off the coast of his island home, bringing with it a sadistic killer hunting Anna and the secrets she’s come close to uncovering.
A truly gifted storyteller, Anderson writes in a thrilling, detailed, gritty style that always leaves me wanting more. Dark Waters is fraught with danger and intrigue, resulting in a suspenseful, action-packed story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Once again, I was somewhat surprised by the number of negative reviews about this book. Specifically, that the author had inserted "romance" into a thriller. I'm not sure what others expect when they read a book clearly categorized as romantic suspense, but I, for one, expect ... well, romance. And though there was plenty of sexual tension between Anna and Brent, I felt the emphasis of the story leaned more towards the mystery and suspense than on the actual romance.
Another well-written story with a diabolical plot, a bit of steamy romance, and an interesting mix of captivating characters, Dark Waters is a well-crafted murder mystery full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.
It is very important to read the Barkley Sound Series in order. Dangerous Waters features Holly and Finn who become secondary characters in Dark Waters. Brent Carver, Finn`s brother, is the ultimate tragic hero. Imprisoned for twenty years for killing his abusive father to protect his younger brother, Brent is still on parole and dealing with his own guilt. He continues to live in the small town where the murder occurred and where he is judged on a daily basis.
Brent is unable to continue to isolate himself from the world when the daughter of a former cell-mate arrives in danger. They are an unlikely couple, given the over ten year age difference and backgrounds, but they have an interesting connection through Holly`s father. Imprisoned in his teens, Brent learns about young adulthood through letters sent by Anna to her father in jail. Unlike Holly in the first book, Anna is damaged and fragile.
Some aspects of the plot are a little over the top, as is Brent`s claim that he learned about kissing through reading many books about the topic on the inside. Not sure exactly which prison has a library like that. Anna`s lucky key which turns up at an opportune time and the fact Anna and Brent are provided police protection to cross the border and then are left on their own to visit her mother in hospital prior to going in protective custody seemed a little bit off.
HOWEVER, this was definitely a gripping story and well worth the read. Just pretend you are watching an action movie where even bigger leaps of faith are required.
"I could cope with a little sullying," he muttered irritably. Ha! Brent is a dark hero, but worth redeeming
