The text is very clearly written and reads quickly, and provides a good foundation for understanding and application of the concepts and techniques. I found this to be very useful in helping evaluate DV platforms and determine selection criteria, as well as to plan my target architecture for implementation this year.
BTW, as the text itself notes, data virtualization includes and subsumed a number of other technologies and techniques, and is still growing and maturing. I expect that his book will be good for another year or so and sufficient for a couple more years but will age quickly, e.g. the fast movement in the big data arena and many new technologies coming available for Business Intellignce, data mining, and more.
If you are getting started with or exploring DV this book is recommended reading.
Rick covers data virtualization from multiple directions. From the highest level he provides a rationale for data virtualization, especially in historical terms relative to technology in general and data integration solutions in particular. Rick also provides a deep dive examination of how data virtualization works, including screen shots from popular products.
Rick also projects the future of data virtualzation, including not only his prognostications, but also those of three data virtualization software company CTOs.
This book complements Data Virtualization: Going Beyond Traditional Data Integration to Achieve Business Agility, which provides ten in-depth data virtualization case studies from a range of organizations.
