Présentation de l'éditeur

Dead on Ice is the first installment of Lauren Carr’s new series (Lovers in Crime) featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates.

Spunky Cameron Gates is tasked with solving the murder of Cherry Pickens, a legendary star of pornographic films, whose body turns up in an abandoned freezer. The case has a personal connection to her lover, Joshua Thornton, because the freezer was located in his cousin’s basement. It doesn’t take long for their investigation to reveal that the risqué star’s roots were buried in their rural Ohio Valley community, something that Cherry had kept off her show business bio. She should have kept her hometown off her road map, too—because when this starlet came running home from the mob, it proved to be a fatal homecoming.

A new series involving Joshua Thornton and his new love interest, detective Cameron...
Unfortunately it is much the same as his other investigations, cold cases being brought back to life, involving him or his family, with a large number of interrelated characters, twisted plots, somewhat improbable... too bad other characters are not more researched and involved as well, such ad cousin Tad.
Another thing too... Joshua Thornton is much too teenage like in his amorous relationship with Cameron. Her cat is cute but a childish detail...
A bit disappointing, I hope the next installment will be more convincing.

This is the first of what appears to currently be two books in Lauren Carr’s series featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates. Thornton’s cousin, an elderly attorney who has a lot in common with Matlock, is found dead in his home, done in by his own hoarding. Or was he? Gates gets called to investigate when half the town is almost blown up during a cleanup day at the dead man’s house.

I was drawn to this series because of my fondness for the author’s other works, and this one did not disappoint. I like the budding relationship between Thornton and Gates, and I particularly enjoyed Gate’s cat, Irving, a Maine coon cat who people mistake for a skunk. A very large skunk. There’s a lot going on in this story – Cousin Albert’s death, the subsequent finding of the body of a local girl turned porn star in a freezer in Albert’s house, the growing attraction between Thornton and Gates, the blatant hostility between Irving and Thornton.

I enjoyed the plotting, the pacing of the mystery, the locale, the skillful weaving in of secondary characters and bits of information about the central deaths, along with getting to know the main characters. Thornton and Gates also appear in Carr’s other series, and it’s nice to see them get primetime attention in this book. This has been hanging around on my TBR pile for a couple of years, and I’m glad it bubbled to the top. I’ll not take so long to read the second in the series, because reading this reminded me how much I like those characters in their other appearances.

Dead On Ice is the first book in the Lovers In Crime series.

Readers first met Joshua Thornton, prosecuting attorney in Hancock County, WV and Cameron Gates, homicide detective with the Pennsylvania State Police, in Shades Of Murder, a Max Faraday series by Lauren Carr.

This book, set in the present day, centers around the disappearance of 18 year old Angie Sullivan after a skating party in Hookstown, PA. Her body was found seven years later submerged in her car, in a river near Chester, WV. The case has gone cold and the principal suspect, Cheryl Smith, has gone missing.

Moving to the present day, Joshua is concerned for his cousin Albert. He has missed church and nobody has seen him for three or four days. Joshua arrives just as Cameron does. Upon entering the house they find Albert buried under a huge pile of newspapers. Albert has left all his property to his church. Members of the church are at the house trying to clean the house all when Cameron is called to the basement by Doris who has found what appears to be a bomb attached to the floor joists. Just as the last person in the house reaches safety, the house explodes. A clean up crew hired to remove the debris finds a freezer in the basement, undamaged. The police find the body of a young girl in the freezer. The body turns out to be the body of Cheryl Smith. Now Cameron need to investigate why she returned, who killed her and why did the body and freezer end up in Albert's cluttered house.

This book gives the read a very good mystery, a little romance and a little humor. Cameron's "skunk" cat, a black cat with a white stripe down it's back is absolutely hilarious.

A wonderful new series and I am looking forward to the next book.

Dead On Ice is a well-developed story that is full of intrigue, humor, action, interesting characters, varied villains, and plenty of suspense. It's not your typical thriller as you're left wondering - really wondering - who the actual killer or killers are for the 2 unsolved murders in this small rural Ohio Valley community. (The third one occurred due to a combination of the person's medical condition and his accident but there is some disbelief there.) It brings to mind the movie, The Usual Suspects, because there are so many possible suspects for those murders, along with tons of possible motives.

What I really liked best about it is the interesting interaction between Cameron Gates's cat, Irving, and her boyfriend, Joshua Thornton. It makes for a lot of interesting moments in the book and provided sometimes much-needed moments of comic-relief and levity for the characters.

Overall, the book was better than I expected. It was hard to put it down due to the various twists and turns in the plot. The need to discover the killer(s), and the perpetrators of other crimes in the book made it extremely hard to put down. My eyes were completely glued to the book until I've read the last page. Very highly recommended. I plan to pick up Lauren Carr's other books in her A Lovers In Crime Mystery series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Character Star Irving "Skunked"! 24 octobre 2012

You know me, right? We met first in Shades of Murder. That was when I first got involved with Gnarly and Mac Faraday. They are both cool dudes, but, really, I just needed to have my own book, which is Dead on Ice, the Debut Lovers in Crime Mystery! And, no, I'm not a lover...yet.

I'm the sidekick of Cameron Gates, one kick-ass lady! Of course, I could have no other type of partner since most people also run when they see me... Ha, I'm just teasing you as we cats are prone to do with our...victims... You see, only God knows why I was literally striped with white down my head and back, so that, some, who don't immediately recognize me as the beautiful Maine Coon that I am, immediately scream, "Skunk!" You know, that gets old reallllll quick! But, at least Mom always immediately corrects the mistake and introduces me...

I'm Irving! Yeah, Irving is my moniker--Mom gave me that name--you wanna step outside and make something of that?

But then, she had to go and allow the story of my being "skunked" to be included... It'll be awhile before I forgive her for that!

So, just let me go ahead and tell you a little about our great story!

Cherry Pickens was her name...

Yes, she was a well-known porn star at one time, but had at some point come back to her home town. Some didn't even know she had been there, or at least that's what they said when my Mom started asking...

Hey, I haven't told you yet that Mom is a state Police homicide detective. She works a lot with Joshua Thornton who is the Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney. This time, Joshua was personally involved because his cousin owned the house...

Where the well-preserved body of Cherry Pickens was found.

But that wasn't the first body...

Albert Gordon was a local lawyer and the cousin of Joshua, but had been noticed to be missing for a few days.

Cameron and Joshua had both showed up to a house that they had not been inside since before Albert's wife had died. Since then he had become a hoarder and there was just a small path through which they began to search. Soon, though, Mom noticed a familiar smell beyond the mustiness of all that was stored there...

They saw his hand first; piles of newspapers had fallen on him and apparently smothered him before he could get out. They soon learned that Albert's estate was left to the church and included a million dollars! That's when people started coming from all over to see what was in the house, to help clean, and to consider what would happen in the future...

And someone spotted the bomb...

There were certainly many trails down which Mom and others went, to try to find out who would have killed a porn star. Could it have been as simple as the mob finding her and taking their revenge out? But then, how did they get the body into a freezer and into the basement of a house so full that humans had to follow the paths that had been left by the owner. You may be stumped by this complex mystery--cause my Mom sure spent a lot of time investigating, not even taking me out as usual! That was NOT good! And I often let her know my feelings, even though she was so busy she couldn't listen to me much!

I've been told this book will be lots of fun for you humans, and Dead on Ice is BRH Highly Recommended! As for me, I hope I am invited back once I'm totally smell-free from the spray from you-know-who! And, if you don't mind, could you keep this little part of the book to yourself...and I'll owe you one!

Enjoy this one, especially my parts in our Debut...I just know it's going to be me that you'll want to follow, but I'm sure you'll also like getting to know my Mom and the others in our little town! Thanks for reading about me!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not Bad New Series by a Good Author 11 novembre 2013

Not bad, but not particularly to my taste. I have liked better the Mac Faraday series by this author. This initial book in a new series featuring two lovers, a widowed and childless female police officer and a county attorney, widowed but father of five children, only one of whom, at 16, still lives at home. One clear strike with me was the former's cat Irving (it sounds like on the audio). The cat is clearly a pain in the neck to the male partner, an annoyance to everyone else, and the Beloved of the pistol packing Mama. Never mind that she occasionally (or frequently-it is difficult to tell) takes him in her patrol car when on duty, she also, apparently, has made it a condition of their affair that he be allowed the run of her lover's house when she is visiting or driving them or doing many other things with him. Bizarre. Quite noticeable also was the apparent lack of television viewing by key witnesses she grills. Only one witness has seemed to have learned from television that he or she (not to reveal plot) had a right to an attorney before being questioned. The rest, including wealthy and successful business people, have not minded being intimidated without a lawyer to protect them or because they would be interviewed "downtown" at police headquarters. Downtown appears to be five minutes away. Finally, and irretrievably, she violates various precepts of a professional police officer with only the mildest rebuke from her "Boss". The most serious would have led to suspension and demotion in every police force in the country, save for Monongolapland,Alaska ( population 5 people and 2 polar bears). Oh, did I say, I couldn't stand her cat.
A number of other characters show promise, her lover and his son seem to be appealing characters around whom future books could be built. This story twists around through time and incongruities keeping me sufficiently interested to read to the end. I did not find it up to the standard of her other series, but she is talented and there is no reason to believe that future volumes will be not be improved to the level we expect from her.
Oh, yes, did I say that I can't stand the cat?
