Again, I’ve run out of new science fiction so I decided to try one of my wife’s favourite detective thriller authors. This is the first book in the James’ Roy Grace series and it is brilliant! The plot twists & turns all over the place and it piles along at a breakneck pace before coming to a most satisfactory conclusion. It is evident that the author takes his craft very seriously; the characters are well drawn and plausible, the police procedural stuff seems very well observed and his knowledge of Brighton and its surroundings gives the novel atmosphere and a real sense of place. The only very slight criticism is the occasional American’ism (e.g. flashlight) grates a bit but this by no means detracts from the quality of the writing. Cracking stuff – I’ll definitely be reading another once I’ve gobbled up the next consignment of sci-fi.
