This is Deadpool still attempting to be the good guy, in yet his latest team-up with Spider Man. Travelling to NYC to learn from the best how to be `a hero' soon our heroes are on the run from Hit Monkey, the assassin of assassins... and it appears that Deadpool is his next intended target.
Issue #22 is an interlude in which Deadpool is travelling, en route to his next big adventure.
Issue #23 stars our primary villain from issues #19-21. This is his one-shot making; the history of Hit Monkey.
#19 - Whatever a Spider Can (Pt. 1): `Start Spreading The News'
Travelling to NYC, Deadpool is in search of Spider man, essentially with a desire to emulate him. When a multiple murder is discovered, so does Spider Man discover Deadpool. After providing an alibi Deadpool thinks he knows the suspect - Hit Monkey (an assassin of assassins) and Spidey thinks he may have just teamed up with the next target.
#20 - Whatever a Spider Can (Pt. 2)
Having tracked Deadpool by following Spider Man, Hit Monkey and Deadpool along with Spidey do battle. Spider Man hatches a plan to throw Hit Monkey off by hoping Deadpool's healing factor is not on Hit Monkey's radar. A faked death followed by too much haste and want for vainglory gets Deadpool into a second Hit Monkey battle. The episode leaves off with another gunning down of Deadpool.
#21 - Whatever a Spider Can (Pt. 3)
Healed up Deadpool steals Spider Man's costume and fakes Spidey's death to lure Hit Monkey to the funeral. Upon attending the funeral yet another gun fight breaks out and Deadpool is offed yet again. Hit Monkey disappears, presumably out of NYC. Deadpool and Spidey have a heart-to-heart and we realize (again) that Deadpool's motives to be the `good guy' are still a bit on the egotistical side. Instead of wanting to do `good' for the sake of doing `good', he only really wants the recognition.
#22 - Do Idiots Dream of Electric Stupidity?
This one is strictly an interlude issue.
After being victimized on a tour bus heist Deadpool goes after the local police (based on a clue). He soon discovers that the fuzz are all crooked hillbillies and their ring leader (whom he suspects in flash-back clips) is going to set him up. When the Department of Alc / Firearms and Tobacco (ATF) arrives Deadpool is arrested, but soon enough is called a `hero'. In exit is the `Dukes of Hazzard' theme song, a nice touch for our would be hero.
#23 - Hit Monkey #1 (One-shot)
Having his home encroached upon by an assassin, one distrustful monkey tries to convince his clan that he (the assassin) shouldn't be there. After watching the healing assassin train in hand-to-hand the monkey (see & do) picks up the skills but is cast out of the group. Assassins return, kill the man they sought plus the entirety of the monkey clan, save one. In the name of vengeance, Hit Monkey is born.
