5.0 étoiles sur 5 The Deaf Gods Are Back 1 juin 2005
Par John Chivian - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Deaf Gods of Babylon is the first of what is now four Lord Tracy albums (or CD's as they're called these days) and contains an assortment of songs ranging in style from arena power ballads (Chosen Ones, Foolish Love) to speed metal and thrash (Pirahna) to rap (3HC) to straight ahead, in your face rock and roll (Out With the Boys, East Coast Rose, and Submission). Produced expertly by Mark Dodson, Deaf Gods of Babylon accurately captures the energy and attitude of the band without the added layers of slick manufactured gloss that made so many of the 80's "hair band" releases sound so formula and predictable. In fact, the album is anything but predictable and will catch you off guard with humor and excitement as you move your way through it. Sadly however, following its 1989 release on the MCA label "UNI Records" it never got the promo and support it needed (UNI folded shortly thereafter) and the stress of trying to carry the entire weight themselves led to the band fracturing apart while touring in early 1991.

Fast forward to 2004. After burying all the old hatchets (and much to the delight of an extremely dedicated fan base) Lord Tracy reforms with all four original members and over the course of the next year releases three new CD's.

The first, "LIVE", was recorded at The Basement in Dallas, Texas in December of 1989 and contains most of the songs from the Deaf Gods of Babylon album. Fans of the old Z-Rock radio network may remember this as it was broadcast nationwide as part of the Coast to Coast Concert Series.

The second of the new releases, "Cull None", contains a mix of songs ranging from stuff on their 1986 demo "Moo Over" to oddities, outtakes and outright derangements captured during the Deaf Gods recording sessions. Cull None would have been a fan club only release in the middle of 1990 had UNI Records survived.

The third and finest of the new releases is simply entitled "Lord Tracy 4" and contains much of what would have been on their formal second album. Like Deaf Gods of Babylon, Lord Tracy 4 shows an incredible range of musical abilities.

All of the Lord Tracy albums, and especially Deaf Gods of Babylon, are thoroughly enjoyable and well worth owning if you can find a copy.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A highly underrated hair metal classic! 2 août 2011

Forget Ratt, Poison, Motley Crue and those other "name" bands. This is, quite far, one of the finest albums of the hair metal/glam genre which got lost in the crowd. Fortunately it stood the test of time while the other bands just seems to be stuck in formulaic excess.

A roomie of mine back in college (not a friend, mind you) had this on tape in the early '90s. It was only recently that I rediscovered the album via P2P. It was something I realized was a forgotten classic that, once placed on my MP3 player, was an album I just had to listen to over and over. I was able to find the CD here used on Amazon in excellent shape.

The attitude is there. The hooks are solid. The humor is infectious as it even takes some shots at the genre. It's a perfect album to put on to please the girlfriend or just for general rockin' out. There's not a dud track to be found here as it veers from hard rock to ballad to speed metal satire.

But I really love how the song "Chosen Ones" builds up as the be-all-to-end all power anthems. The mix of the album is perfect but definitely shines on this track with its various percussive elements. The shaker on the left channel sounds like its elsewhere outside of the speakers as though its right inside the room.

The liner notes for the album are an interesting read with mention of the "mindless guitar" and "Viking" parts of "Piranha" as well as huge praise for Mark Dodson's production and guitar work. And, yes, the lyrics are scrawled in there as well.

If you can find this then check it out. It's amazing stuff from a band that has its origins in Pantera back when it was glam in the '80s. I'd rank this with Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" in regards to pure music satisfaction.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 This CD rocks and is funny as hell in places! 5 mars 2005

I am not sure how i got this cd but i love it.

Chosen Ones & Foolish Love are similar to other 80's power ballads

3HC is as funny as AC/DC's Big Balls

Shes a bitch is a perfect song if your ex wife (like mine) is a real big bitch. The chorus consists of the men in the band shouting Shes A Bitch.

East Coast rose is decent as is Out With The Boys.

All in all a solid effort. I wish they had done a follow up so they had a second chance to get big

This band should have made it. They were among the "hair bands" of the 80's but show a ton more talent than most. If you were lucky enough to see them live then you were in-deed lucky. Buy it, hold on to it, and play it loud!
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Overlooked '80s party rock album 22 août 2012

1989's Deaf Gods of Babylon (great title, by the way) was the debut album from Lord Tracy, one of the more overlooked bands from the `80s hair metal era. Lord Tracy - a play on the name of actress Traci Lords - featured original Pantera vocalist Terrence Glaze and was a fairly straightforward party rock band.

Since Lord Tracy debuted later in the decade, they bypassed some of the lipstick and spandex silliness of early Poison and Pretty Boy Floyd. Instead they went for straight-up, no frills party rock. Deaf Gods of Babylon is a full-on barroom rocker with great guitar hooks, shout-along lyrics, just enough bluesy swagger, and a dose of humor to keep things from getting too serious. It's not complicated. It's fun. And that's why we love this kind of rock in the first place. Highlights include opening rocker "Out With the Boys," the slower "In Your Eyes," and the third song, which has a title I probably can't print here.

Lord Tracy never really caught on, except with the most dedicated fans of the `80s hard rock sound, and of course the `90s didn't treat bands like this very well at all. Deaf Gods of Babylon is a fun album though, and one that is worth checking out if you're into bands like Ratt, Motley Crue, Tangier, Junkyard and the like. Unfortunately it's been out of print for ages.
