I enjoyed this short book enormously and I wish Amazon would let me give it more than five stars! It expresses thoughts which I (a manic ebook reader and reviewer) have on a daily basis.

I love memoirs and I'm thrilled that self-publishing has made available so many fine books that publishing companies would never had taken a chance on. Many of the first-time authors who have impressed me with their excellent writing skills are actually experienced professionals in copy-writing, advertising, public relations, or entertainment. Some are writer/editors for business, scientific, or non-profit publications. There are many ways to become a competent writer without having published a book.

On the other hand, those who have no writing experience should not be discouraged from telling their stories. One of my favorite authors is an English housewife who swears she never wrote anything more exciting than a grocery list when she started her hilarious series of memoirs. If you want to tell your story and feel that sharing your experiences might be helpful to others, you should do so. Don't try to be fancy. Just tell your story simply and don't pad it out to make the book longer. Most readers will not be expecting perfection, but you SHOULD try to have your book edited because it shows that you cared enough to get it into good shape before you sent it out into the world. If you can't afford a professional editor, try to find an English teacher or even an English major in college who might be willing to help you for a small payment.

New authors should be prepared for two brutal facts of life. First, your book WILL be criticized, perhaps even harshly or unfairly. Second, there are VERY few people who make a living writing. Be realistic and you won't be disappointed.

As for the flood of short non-fiction "books" now clogging the Kindle site, I am both irritated and curious. Many of them are poorly written and obviously quickly cobbled together from Wikipedia and other free sources of information. I pick up some as freebies and usually discard them after a few paragraphs. Does anyone actually BUY these things?! If you do not speak American or British English your readers will know, even if you call yourself "Ed Jones" or "Sally Smith." English as spoken in India and other Asian countries is sometimes charming, but it doesn't sound the same! And that list of glowing five-stars Fiverr reviews is more likely to harm than help sales. I recognize the names of those reviewers and automatically ignore any book they review. I suspect I'm not the only reader who does. Use your money for an editor and readers like me will supply good reviews for free!

I haven't finished the book yet, but I had to pause to say thank you. Thank you for saying what so many want to, but haven't gathered the guts or skills to say it properly.

I'm a reader, I have been a reader since long before I could actually read, I just always loved books. When I spend money on myself, I'll spend on books first, usually. I love indie authors, I love being able to give a gift of a book to someone, and have it start an obsession with an author's work that they wouldn't have found otherwise.

I don't love the indie "authors" who churn out trend-chasing 26 page booklet after booklet, (The oh gods kill me series, book #32 of #3050) whether about becoming a bazillionaire, or bedding one (Captured by the hot whip-wielding vampire/merman/werewolf crossbreed bazillionaire) drowning the good stuff out.

I'm beginning to feel about my books the way an aging punk-rock hipster feels about their music, and that annoys me. I'm just so glad I'm not alone.

Every kindle writer needs to read this book. They won't and that makes me want to pluck my eyes out with a bent fork.

This book covers the main reasons that books get bad ratings. It is careful not to load up on fluffery. It gives the facts, the reminder to edit. The only thing it didn't say was, "have an English as the native language speaker edit your translated book."

I dislike telling authors that their books are too badly edited or cobbled together to make even basic sense of it. The author walks away mad because I just tore the head off their 8 year labor of love over a "few editing errors". (Few editing errors on every single page times just under 500 pages. Major errors as in missing or misused words.)

I dislike the throw the key words around without really giving information that is more than vague. Or the term paper like theme books where the verbiage is technical but doesn't say much.

Love this book for the real tips it provides.

What an absolutely fantastic read, full of common sense laid out in a wonderfully readable and often humorous style. Right from the start I identified with the author's comments and frustrations and, judging by the other reviews, there are many more out there like me. For such a short book it's amazing the number of times I wanted to cheer. M K Larson, if you're ever setting up an Amazon reform group, please count me in.

Every writer who wants to publish a Kindle book or any book, for that matter, should be required to read this probably several times. It's just a good, short book with very good advice on how to and how NOT to write an interesting, useful book.
