Présentation de l'éditeur

Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel relocates to London to take on another harrowing murder investigation.

The bodies of two black girls are discovered in quick succession in North London. Concerned about a reaction from the local black community, the police are puzzled to learn that two teeth were extracted from both victims after they died. One of the girls worked in a massage parlour and suspicion falls on a client of hers, a known racist, but while the police flounder, the killer takes another girl home to his attic, where he keeps his victims chained up while he shows them his 'collection'. With the death toll mounting, Geraldine is running out of time as she hunts for the elusive killer the papers are calling 'The Dentist'.

This is the 4th in the Geraldine Steel series, and it would appear that having found a winning formula, Leigh Russel is sticking with it. The first couple of books were interesting, but by the third one, there's a distinct feeling of deja vu. Same plot - different storyline - suspect everyone else but Geraldine is sure of, ( she turns out to be right, of course) unstable relationship with her sister, inability to hand over responsibility, boss who takes all the credit for Geraldine's work, etc. etc. I won't be reading the 5th book.

Liked this one. Much better than the others, quite fast moving and good insight into the problems of facing a new job in a different city. Good read.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Definitely a mystery author that I will read again 27 février 2014

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Of course, it's me reviewing this book as it is a mystery and I can't help but read them all for myself! I did enjoy this book and story mostly and it kept me interested for the most part. The story got a bit slow and bogged down toward the end. I felt like maybe the author was trying to put too much other stuff into the story and not focusing and concentrating on the mystery/thriller part. So it got slow and the inner dialogue with Geraldine about her mother was a bit over the top. I didn't feel like it added to the story and it almost felt like it was just thrown in to add drama, which I didn't feel like it did.

I would probably read more books by Leigh Russell as this one was well written and even though it took place in England, it wasn't too heavy on the slang, which some books tend to be. Even though I was reading and uncorrected proof, it was pretty well edited and I didn't notice too many errors. I like that about unedited books as even though they are marked as unedited, I still have a hard time reading them if they are too heavy on the errors. I do agree that she is a "brilliant talent" as Jeffrey Deaver called her (another author I absolutely LOVE!).

But sadly the lead character Geraldine Steel is SO awful it's hard to enjoy the book. I've read all the previous 3 books, and while they lack a certain something, they also have that little something special about them as well. The lead character has never come off as particularly nice, but this book takes the cake. She's rude, homophobic and quite honestly I wish I hadn't bought the rest of the books in the series, goes to show, buying kindle, best to do it one at a time ! I won't be buying anymore books from this author.

Really enjoyed the new setting, the new characters, possibly geraldines new sexuality...And I'm loving the birth Mom angle and the angst that comes with it

I've liked this series so far but this one just isn't plausible at all. The intuitive leap required to solve the case is pretty ridiculous and the personal backstory for the main character is getting rather tedious. I hope the next in the series is better.

Russell has a great protagonist in DI Geraldine Steel: deeply committed to her job, yet flawed and realistic.
Wonderful series but start with the first, CUT SHORT if you haven't read any yet so you can follow her history and personal life. Four in print in US, with 5 and 6 coming this spring.
