Présentation de l'éditeur

Her head was yanked back by the hair as a large, tanned hand moved menacingly down her throat. Her sobs flecked his shirt with tears, which now flowed freely, their salty water aggravating the wounds accumulated on her naked flesh over the endless days she had been held captive. The end must be near now and she was so sure that it must end. She tried in vain one last time to wrench free her hands, but the bindings held firm. Knees, so long on the floor, would not have held her up anyway - had she tried to run. He was calm. She was wretched. Instinctively, she pulled her thighs to her abdomen to protect her unborn child. His hands tightened, her eyes widened - pleading. His pressure did not relent and slowly everything faded...

After months of mental and physical therapy, Yvonne Giles, an Oxford DI, is back at work and that's just how she likes it. So when she's asked to hunt the serial killer responsible for taking apart young women, the DI jumps at the chance but hides the fact she is suffering debilitating flashbacks. She is told to work with Tasha Phillips, an in-her-face, criminal psychologist. The DI is not enamoured with the idea. Tasha has a lot to prove. Yvonne has a lot to get over. A tentative link with a 20 year-old cold case brings them closer to the truth but events then take a horrifyingly personal turn...

Biographie de l'auteur

I grew up in the small market town of Newtown in Mid-Wales, thirty miles from the English border. From the age of three, I was an avid reader of anything I could lay my hands on and later wrote poetry and short stories for my school magazine. I left Newtown to study for a degree in biochemistry at UCW Aberystwyth on the Welsh coast and followed this with a PhD in medical biochemistry at the University of Bath and then ten years of research, at the Metabolic Research Lab in Oxford. Meanwhile I 'gigged' on the Oxford music scene with my band called IRIS. In the last two years before I left Oxford, I joined the Police Special Constabulary, going out on an eight hour shift every Friday night, as part of a response unit. It was after a particularly harrowing shift that the ideas for my novel first formed. In 2003, and following much soul-searching, I moved back to my home town here in Wales to be near my family and begin a new life and career in Criminal Justice. I have a beautiful son and two wonderful cats and a home set in a picturesque welsh village. Besides writing, I enjoy oil painting and photography. I am now working on my second novel.

I give this book 4 stars & if I could add another 1/2 I would! It's an amazing read, one I couldn't put down. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I reserve those for the very very few that have plots & characters I'm still thinking about for weeks after the end of the book.

From the very first pages, this book had me & I could not put it down until the last page. The book is a little longer than most, but the mystery is so good it reads very fast.

The main character, DI Yvonne Giles is one of the better female title characters I've seen penned in quite a while. She is not silly, frivolous or constantly extolling the virtues of chocolate and coffee as is the norm for female sleuths these days it seems. Nor is she 'hard' or rough around the edges. She's a perfect blend of flawed, driven and intelligent. That said, it does make one of her choices toward the end of the book questionable, since she has been so smart throughout. Although without that lapse in judgment there wouldn't be a plotline to the rapid fire conclusion. It doesn't detract from the overall book, I just don't care for a characters well developed traits - intelligence & caution in this case - sacrificed for plotline. However, it was an error anyone could make which in turn just makes her all the more authentic.

If I have to point to something I didn't like, it would be the direction of the relationship between Yvonne & Tasha. It was distracting & I didn't feel it was in DI Giles' character, it felt as if the author was pushing something on us that didn't add to the story at all. I really liked the character of Tasha, her being a lesbian has nothing to do with my feelings on this. In fact, she was a great addition & a very smart character who I felt if not distracted by her attraction to Giles, should have & would have picked up on several clues she blatantly missed - considering her character was built up as a leading in the field of criminal psychology. I definitely enjoyed the friendship that was built between these two female leads, but it was pushed further which led to the feeling of a forced romantic angle. Again, this doesn't detract from the overall book - the book didn't need the romantic angle at all. It's a great mystery/thriller and one I would enthusiastically recommend to all lovers of a great, edge-of-your-seat thriller.

This was a great murder mystery. From the start, you are never sure what is really at work, the story weaves together current murder spree with a long forgotten crime that eventually leads the investigators to the true culprit. I thought the characterization of the police was great, and the ending was thrilling and surprising.

This is one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. It's creepy good while still being very believable. The characters are very well developed and could be the folks next door. There are twists and turns throughout, with a very unexpected ending. This one will keep you up nights. Very well written and edited.

Any parent's worst nightmare is you child being kidnapped. How naive kids can be when it comes to the internet. While there are a few typos, it didn't detract from the book. This book keeps you wanting to see the nightmare end. If you like murder mysteries then it is one worth reading

Yvonne Giles, an Oxford DI, is asked to hunt the serial killer responsible for taking apart young women, the DI jumps at the chance but hides the fact that she is suffering debilitating flashbacks from some tragic event which has occurred “off page”.

The victims in this case appear to meet their murderer willingly, telling their families they're going on vacation. No one sees them again until their macabre death scenes. What’s the common thread connecting them all together, aside from the food and wine stains the killer leaves on the backs of the girls?

Yvonne thinks there is a link to a 20-year-old cold case, but no one else believes her. Pressure is coming down from the top to solve this one quickly, so Yvonne is told to work with Tasha Phillips, an in-her-face, criminal psychologist. She’s very attractive, so the men on Yvonne’s team are agog, but Tasha only has eyes for Yvonne.

There is some gruesomeness to this story, and I don’t think the lesbian love angle was really necessary, but I do give the author points for handling it well. And it did add to the complexity of Yvonne’s character. Even with those issues, the plot was gripping and the chase to find the killer compelling. I think I would read more in this series – assuming it is a series, being labeled “Book 1” – I’m a big fan of British police procedurals, and this one didn't disappoint.
