4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Poker Book 20 décembre 2012
Par frank w. bennett - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This is a very solid and sound book. I have read well over 30 poker books and I like the way she thinks through hands. Not only did I read it once, I referred back to it a few times over the last year. I'm really writing this review because most of the 1 star reviews are irresponsible and I wanted to reply. If you read the 1 star reviews you will notice a few things. First, most of them did not read the book. Second, most of them are angry at her brother and simply wrote an angry comment. Also, most of the comments are completely meritless. Several reviews said that she is not qualified to write a poker book because she does not win. This is incorrect. Annie Duke has won over $4,000,000 in poker tournaments and cashed over 40 times. If this is not winning, I want this level of failure. One of the 1 star reviews is clearly just a promotion for 2 plus 2 books. He not only complained about this book, he managed to complain about all of the Gordon books as well. One of the reviewers actually tried to claim that all 75 five-star reviews must be fake. So this one mean that got 75 people that live in different places to write long and detailed reviews (some over 300 words) that are all fake. What seems more realistic, that 75 people are lying or that 12 people that gave the book a bad review have their own agenda's. I don't know Annie, but I would really hate if my work was insulted because of something my brother was involved with. If you are a low to mid level player you will get some good ideas from this book. Its worth the price. It's not perfect, but I have gotten a lot out of it and I have definitely applied things I learned in this book to my game.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A good book for investors as well as poker players. 10 novembre 2016

This is not just a good poker. It should be mandatory reading for anyone who has to make decisions in the face of limited knowledge. It teaches the importance of managing ones risk so that one is not put in the position of making difficult decisions when a lot is at stake. It also reminds us that a good decision is not necessarily a winning decision, but, one which fosters long term success.

The unlikely will happen. It doesn't mean that the risk model has failed. [The pollsters who are beating themselves up over the failure to anticipate the Trump victory should recognize what every good poker player knows: sometimes when bets in with an 80% chance of winning, one loses and when an opponent fills a straight on the last card. It was still a good bet.]

5.0 étoiles sur 5 It Feels Honest 22 novembre 2016

I like this book. There's a sense of honesty I haven't gotten from some other books. I've played enough poker to know that it's foolish for anyone to think there is a perfect ABC step approach to the game and the bulk of the book is dedicated to situations. I think those situations are well described in human terms. There are no math tables because we have the internet, and the statistics can easily be looked up. On the other hand, I did buy one of the math books by Alton Hardin (mostly just because I like reading about math and I learn better when I have a tangible book in my hands), and I feel like this book does a much better job at putting the numbers into context since the authors factor in opponents' play styles, the ebb and flow of table tightness, and the power of position into terms that scared me a bit... which they should since my scope of the game widened quite quickly.

I came away with a much bigger perspective on the game and I am going to be a better player thanks to this book. All on its own, the large portion of the book dedicated solely to playing top pair made me feel like I got my money's worth. The attitudes and logic on hole card selection were also very beneficial to someone at my skill level, which is above beginner but still too short of confidence to go for the $20-$40 blinds table on my income.

There are no secrets on opponents tells (but there are recommendations on that literature) and I wonder if some of the tactics may be a bit dated since the book is nearing 6yrs in print. Even if they are, I feel like several of my fundamentals are stronger and I am much harder to push around than I was a few months ago.

If you're rocking $20-$40 tables, maybe you won't need this as much. On the other hand, if you're playing $20-$40 tables... I can't see how this would be bad to buy for less than one big blind.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 It's Finally Sticking!!! THANKS!! 20 avril 2013
Par M. Forehand - Publié sur Amazon.com

I had read this book before, reading bits and pieces here and there. I thought I was applying it in my play, but I was doing it totally incorrectly and - more importantly - inconsistently. However, I knew enough to recognize that there was something there that was missing from my game that I hadn't learned from the many other poker books I've read.

So - in order to try to really learn it, I downloaded the audiobook version and started listening every day during my commute. I am now into my third listen, and I'm still learning and getting better. My tournament results have sky-rocketed, helped no doubt by a healthy dose of winning races in key spots. This audiobook has paid for itself about 400-500X by my estimate.

However - and WAY more importantly - I am 1000% more comfortable at the table and positive of the moves I make. This confidence is contagious and helps me to project a much more scary table image and get way more respect. No longer am I picked on as the weak-tight fish just hoping to make it into the money. I recently won my first tourney in the local card room, and one of the players in the final 3 told me "I had a feeling early on that it would be me and you in it to the end."

This book had not only made me a better poker player, but it's made me a happier poker player. Now that is a good poker book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Annie at her best 30 octobre 2013

Really great poker advice from Annie Duke. Goes against a lot of the books out there, and against "conventional wisdom." A lot of the humor and slightly raunchy language must come from her co-author, and it's terrific. My only problem was trying to wade through the hundred or more pages on playing top pair - with or without the lead, heads up or multi-way, textured or non-textured board, on and on. Sure, if you're going to play top level poker you need to understand all that, but it's a huge pill to swallow. I'm re-reading it now. Anyway, just the advice on raising pre-flop is probably worth far more than the book price. The other sections on playing big hands and on bluffing taught me more than all the other poker books I've read, including Brunson and Harrington. This one is wonderful.
