HASH(0x883b2f9c) étoiles sur 5 Hardly Definitive Of Their Brunswick Years 16 mai 2012
Par George O'Leary - Publié sur
Format: CD
Beginning with the June 1995 12-track CD from Brunswick, then the 10-track volume in March 2002 from EMI Special Products, and on to the August 2003 10-track release from Collectables, all titled The Best Of Young-Holt Unlimited, there is one common factor: not one among them contains all six of their charted singles (never mind any of their flipsides). And that's something collectors like myself expect to see in a volume titled "Best of" - especially when so few actual hit singles were involved - since these were the songs that got them heard on the air waves and in juke boxes, in addition to being their best-selling singles.

So then I saw this October 2005 20-track release from Brunswick boldly blaring The Definitive Young-Holt Unlimited and thought, maybe, that at last we were going to be rewarded with at least all five of their Brunswick charters and, hopefully, their B-sides (their last was for the Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion so its omission is understandable in the circumstances). But alas no, there are two Brunswick charted hits omitted along with several flipsides.

Drummer Isaac "Redd" Holt and bassist Eldee Young, graduates of the Chicago Conservatory Of Music, started out as members of the 1950s group The Clefs, along with Ramsey Lewis (no charted hits), then in 1956 became original members of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. There they were part of one minor hit, 1964's Something You Got (# 63). When they in turn decided to form the Young Holt Trio, Ramsey's new group would go on to chalk up some 18 hits, while for Holt, Young, and pianist Don Walker, despite introducing some unique touches to the soul sound with Young's acoustic bass and the use of a cello on some cuts, the pickings became much slimmer.

Their first charter with Brunswick, in fact, didn't come until 1967 when Wack Wack rose to # 12 R&B/# 35 AC/# 40 Hot 100 that January b/w This Little Light Of Mine on Brunswick 55305, tunes that were very much in the same vein as the material being produced by The Ramsey Lewis Trio - the group they left ostensibly to pursue a "different sound." But when they did pursue that new sound it kept them off the commercial charts for almost two years, during which time Walker was replaced by Canadian Ken Cragen and the name was changed to Young-Holt Unlimited.

That came just in time for their smash hit, Soulful Strut, which shot to # 2 Adult Contemporary (AC)/# 3 Hot 100/R&B in late 1968/January 1969 b/w Country Slicker Joe on Brunswick 55391. An oddity here is that this exact same hit melody would be used by Barbara Acklin as the instrumental behind Am I The Same Girl, # 33 R&B/# 79 Hot 100 later that year, also on Brunswick. In March 1969, Who's Making Love topped out at # 57 Hot 100 b/w Just Ain't No Love on Brunswick 55400, but both sides were shut out on the R&B charts. This last hit, and three B-sides, are omitted from this so-called "definitive" compilation.

The reverse happened in June when their fourth hit, Just A Melody, became a weak # 49 R&B b/w Young And Holtful on Brunswick 55410, failing on the Hot 100 and AC charts. But while both sides of this minor entry are included here, they then omit Straight Ahead, a # 32 AC/# 110 Hot 100 Bubble Under in September and it's flip, California Montage (Brunswick 55417. Their sixth and final hit came over a year later with Atlantic's Cotillion subsidiary when Mellow Dreaming rose to # 18 AC and # 106 Hot 100 Bubble Under in October 1970 b/w Black And White. Good luck finding those two in any CD volume.

The sound quality here is certainly excellent and there are liner notes by the noted music writer/historian A. Scott Galloway. But calling it a "definitive" collection of their work is misleading. Too much left out to go beyond 3 stars. And so we wait for a truly all-encompassing volume, hopefully from someone like Ace or Jasmine of the U.K.

HASH(0x883b400c) étoiles sur 5 Underrated Instrumental Soul-Jazz 30 décembre 2013
Par Donald E. Gilliland - Publié sur

As noted in the main review, Eldee Young and Red Holt were members of the great Ramsey Lewis Trio, and then left to form this musical outfit, fusing jazz with soul and pop. This is an almost entirely instrumental collection of music and includes some terrific funky compositions. Soulful Strutting indeed! A couple of the covers they do aren't particularly amazing (I can live without hearing another version of "Light My Fire," for example), but for the most part this CD has some really fun stuff.

I don't know enough about the recording history of the various Young-Holt lineups to know if this CD truly qualifies as "Definitive" (I defer to another more knowledgeable reviewer on that point) --- but at least one truly great track, "California Montage" is missing from this collection. Looking through the list of other available compilations by Young-Holt, I noticed a CD titled "Wack Wack: The Best of", released by Demon UK, that could be a truly definitive collection, as it includes "California Montage" as well as the other big hits such as "Soulful Strut" and the title track. If Demon is putting it out, it should be good quality, but it's not clear how many tracks are on it. Amazon gives a track listing for 19 songs, but in the product description it says there are 21 tunes! No reviews for that CD yet, so details aren't clear. Anyone want to take a chance on that one?

But what is clear is the Young and Holt were a very talented and still underrated recording act, one that gave us some very memorable music with funky rhythms galore.

Retro, funky, r and b, and smooth. All that. How can you ask for more? "Unlimited" is right. Thanks, fellas.

Soulful Strut? Love it. I thought the rest of the CD would be just as good, but I didn't care for much of it. I loved Holt and Young when they were with Ramsey Lewis. Tremendous albums! Then I heard "Soulful Strut," and I thought anything they do has to be great. There's a lot of people who like their stuff; I just found them to be a one-hit wonder.

This team was great, indeed. Listen for instance, the theme Soulful strut is a theme ahead its time. Such arrangements anticipate the smooth jazz. In 1968!

Purchase this album as soon as you can. You will be amazed with these guys...
