This is a novella set after the last book in the Descent series (Dire Blood) and told mainly from James' perspective. It helps progress the story from where we left off and we get a better understanding of why things happened the way they did. In addition to that, Ms.Reine has very skillfully added new twists to this very awesome story. Normally I do not enjoy flipping around from the H and h's POV but I've become so invested in this story that it didn't bother me. Also, i didnt feel that this ending was as much of a cliffhanger. Thank you, Ms. Reine. of course you'll need to read the next to find out other things, and maybe because the last cliffhanger was such a doozy, but this one had a more satisfying closure while making me want to read the next book. I read this in one evening and would whole-heartedly recommend this series to anyone who likes urban fantasy.

This Descent Series is great, you will have to get comfortable because there are many books with Elise and James. They are fighting demons and trying to stay out of hell while doing it. All the while there are secretly in love with each other but will not admit it. There are a lot going on between them and I will not spoil it for you. If you love a great series with demons & angels, love & hate and all the feelings you could want in a series, then this if for you. SM Reine has hit the nail on the head with this series and I can't wait for the next book.

Chapter one of "Defying Fate" reveals exactly who James Faulkner is and has been since 1993. Whereas Elise became a demon, James ended up an angel instead.

There is a need in me to try to understand something about the characters I meet in various fictional and non-fictional works. In "Defying Fate" it is easy to understand a person like Zane St. Vil. Zane is a kopis with the Union. He is of average intelligence and pleased with the power and firepower the Union brings him. He is a coward at heart and bullyish on the outside. Zane will always do what makes him seem bigger and badder than the rest and if he meets resistance he will use the greatest force possible.

Then we have a person like James. Ultimately, I know that James will do what serves James the best. But what route is he going to take? We are talking about a highly intelligent man with a devious mind and lots of power at hand. He is perfectly willing to harm the people he loves if he thinks it will serve them in the long run, in spite of him never having had the gift of prescience. A person like that is difficult to predict.

I won't pretend to understand James. His personality has so many twists and turns that I cannot follow along. I imagine part of that personality has come about because he has had to hide his nature from Elise and every other person he has met since his change. Part of it has been with him all along, but as we tend to be the sum of our parts, being an angel would have influence on some of what James does.

Nathaniel is the perfect son for him. This is one powerful kid. James needs a person who exceeds his own abilities so he can stop seeing himself as the epitome of witchcraft. In addition Nathaniel is a 12-year-old in the way that only peeved-off and disappointed 12-year-olds can be. He'd practically worshipped his father ever since he discovered who his father was. Then Nathaniel met the person behind the myths and found that James was not as glorious as he had been made out to be.

Nathaniel is like Elise in many ways. He is fiercely loyal to those he attaches himself to and he will do just about anything for them. In this case that means saving Elise. James says he cannot come along and Nathaniel pretty much says that James has nothing to say in the matter. In the end James brings Nathaniel along because a coming together of choices leaves Hannah dead. Poor Nathaniel.

Gary Zettel is a dedicated and driven leader of the local unit of the Union. He and Allyson are probably the two worst people the Union could have made kopis and apsis. The two of them together are a nuclear bomb waiting to explode. Their potential for destruction is enormous and, like James, they don't care who gets hurt along the way. Well, James cares, but he still does it. Gary and Allyson on the other hand follow the teaching of "ends justifying the means". They are also unpredictable.

With a group of people like this "Defying Fate" can only be one thing - full of thrills. My goodness, Reine writes action well and her descriptions of Malebolge are a delight. Dark, violent and crazy is what "Defying Fate" is.

HASH(0x9cde26b4) étoiles sur 5 What a great series!!!!! BEST SERIES I'VE READ IN YEARS 5 mai 2013

I usually read a series when I can read it all together back to back because I'm not very patient. I can't believe I have to wait for the next book. With all that being said, I'd still HAPPILY would have spent the last 6 days reading this series because it is excellent! I don't even think the next book in this series will end it because there are so many great paths it can explore further. The writing style and world Reine created blows my mind with its creativity, especially as a writer myself. The story lines are as riveting as the characters' mind blowing depths. It's truly amazing to see what a brilliant mind can imagine. I found myself in awe of this writer and humbled.

The series, I believe must be started at the beginning. In no way do I want to over share here and blow the experience for anyone who reads it so while I'm sorry I'm vague I think you'll agree when you read the series. I'd strongly suggest that you don't read any reviews that delve to deeply into specifics in the storyline. It would hurt the brilliance that you are experiencing as you can't wait to turn the next page. With that being said ..

The main characters Elise and James are both broken in many ways but complete each other in others that developed beautifully. So many motivations and secrets are revealed in this book, and they are shocking. For me, they provoked so many conflicting emotions within. I was sad for them both but hopeful that it can still work out because you can't count either one of these two out. I was mad at one but my heart broke in sympathy at the same time. I rooted for people I didn't expect and hated people I thought I wouldn't. I loved the brilliant supporting people of the story that were so unexpected. Elise is strong, independent, loyal, a force of nature with a spine of steal. She is also emotionally broken by an exceptionally hard life. James' love and constant companionship while strengthening her maybe the one thing that has the power to destroy her. James' love and will may also be the only thing that saves them both from a fate set for them long before either was ever born.

As I said before, what I loved most was how unexpected this whole new world Reine created is. I will dream about it because the creation was so real that I was immersed. Even with all the screwed upness of that world I would love to visit, and CAN NOT WAIT until Reine brings it back again. I may actually re-read the series, which is something I have NEVER done! HUNDREDS OF BOOKS ON MY KINDLE AND NEVER ONCE HAVE I REREAD BEFORE NOW! I'm just not ready to leave Elise and James yet. Additionally, I'm sure between the unbelievable amount of depth and my need to find out what happened next, I'm sure I'd see even more with a reread. Have fun reading this series, I'm smiling for the experience your getting ready to have.

I might need a few minutes after reading this book. Or a week. I don't know. A lot happens. A LOT. And I'm all flaily hands at things now. So, if this doesn't make sense, blame S.M. Reine. *nods*

Seriously, I don't know if I know where to start. I mean, THINGS HAPPEN and they aren't all good. We're given answers to questions we didn't even know we should be asking and OMG!WTF?I HATE THE UNION.

So. Elise. She's not in this book much. Which is funny because every step James takes here is with her in mind. Alas, poor Elise has been dropped in the garden and James is going to do his damnedest to find a way to get her out. His damnedest is pretty darn accurate, come to think. He travels to a hell dimension or two, consorts with demons (AS ONE DOES!), and ... err, does other stuff.

But that's all in the past now, right? Water under the bridge. James might have been lying to Elise for the last ten years but... okay, wait. How does one come back from that? They've died for one another. They've pulled each other out of impossible situations. Elise came back from the dead and went to hell to save James.

Their relationship is very tangled, isn't it?

I ADORE this series. It's insane and fast paced and darkly brutal at times and it's utterly captivating. I am completely smitten with everything that's fallen out of S.M. Reine's head at this point. And I'm deathly afraid of the final book in this series.

No matter. I'm going to read it anyway. ONWARD!
