Présentation de l'éditeur

What gardeners want most is a bigger and better return on their investment of time and money--maximum yields and superior flavor for edibles, long-lasting blooms for flowers. Derek Fell's Grow This! features expert advice for choosing and growing the top-performing plants (and avoiding the ones that disappoint).

Derek Fell has grown hundreds of varieties and annually visits gardens and test plots across America, so he's qualified to guide gardeners to the best of the best--more than 600 vegetable, flower, herb, and lawn grass all-stars. He offers honest feedback about plant performance, even when it contradicts favorable public opinion or a grower's claims. Seed racks may be filled with 'Kentucky Wonder' snap beans, but he dismisses that variety as too fibrous and needy and instead recommends 'Blue Lake' beans for tenderness and high yields. Fell's firsthand experience means the difference between choosing plant winners and losers.

Packed with insider evaluations from seedsmen, growers, and nursery retailers that readers won't find elsewhere, Derek Fell's Grow This! explains industry lingo and debunks marketing hype to help gardeners select the best-performing plants for all garden conditions and goals.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic book, great for beginners 15 juillet 2013

This is an excellent book for beginner and experienced gardeners alike. It covers an extensive variety of vegetables, flowers, annuals, perennials, grasses and more. Fell begins by explaining his extensive gardening experience, his test gardens, and generally why he feels that he can recommend some plants over others. There is also a small section of the best places to purchase seeds and plants, and on how best to start and care for your garden. But the meat of the book discusses the plant varieties themselves.

His reasoning for choosing some plants over others is very thoughtful and well explained. For example, some plants may be recommended because they produce superior fruits, have higher yields, take a shorter amount of time to mature, or are less prone to pests. But he also has recommendations like avoiding speckled lettuce varieties, because they taste identical to regular lettuce, but the speckles resemble plant disease and are thus hard to serve to guests. He also doesn't recommend peppers hotter than jalapenos for most people, such as habaneros, because they are just too spicy to use in most recipes, and can be dangerous if handled without gloves.

What I love most about this book though are the bits of plant history sprinkled throughout the pages. For example, in the melon section, Fell mentions that Victorian ladies used to carry small pocket sized melons, called the "Queen Anne Pocket Melon," because they were pleasantly fragrant, an asset in times when bathing was infrequent. However, the melon is quite flavorless, despite its delightful fragrance, so it is on the list of not recommended plants. He also frequently introduces plants by talking about how the seeds date back to the 1800's, which I found quite interesting.

Each plant section ends with a list of their common pests, growing zone, how to plant, and a list of suitable companion plants.

I do wish that Fell provided more information about herbs. He lumps all herbs together into a small section. Many herbal plants can be quite beautiful and decorative in their own right, and deserve more than the two pages they were given. Fells also lists arugula as his favorite and most useful herb, which I thought was a weird choice, as I mainly see it as a peppery addition to salads.

I can't wait to test out some of his recommended plants next year.

This is a great book written by a great gardener. This book is mostly a reference for garden plants but also has some helpful information and tips on gardening in general. This year I bought the Red Ace Hybrid beet based on Derek's recommendation. His reason was that it grows faster than the regular Detroit Red. My mom wanted her Detroit Red so I ordered it for her and ordered the Red Ace for myself. My beets are way ahead of hers! I also tried the Burpee Golden Beet and it will be in my garden again. Imagine taking red beet eggs that are a golden color! I've though about adding a few red beets to the goldens to give it a fire orange color!

We moved to the U.P. and had a hard time with finding vegtables that would grow with our short season. Love this book. I am going to try all the recommended veggies.

I have Derek's earlier book on Vertical Gardening and like it. Buy this one ( for me) is a bit broad and covers to many things while I was hoping for vegetable growing tips.

Not a fault of the book, but I was expecting a bit narrower focus. If you want to read about everything from Asters to Zuchinni, this might be ok for you.

His many years of experience working with varieties in various locations, observing the varieties that perform best for him, provides the reader with valuable information to help them be successful.
