Présentation de l'éditeur

This is a collection of the first three titles in The Descent Series, which are gritty urban fantasy books about an exorcist, a witch, and their battles against the forces of Heaven and Hell. (Approx. 200,000 words total.) Books included: 1. Death's Hand 2. The Darkest Gate 3. Dark Union DEATH'S HAND Elise Kavanagh doesn't want to hunt demons anymore. It's been five years since she killed her last enemy, and life has been quiet since then. She went to college. Got a job, and then lost it. Made a friend or two. Lived a normal life. Now her former partner, a powerful witch named James Faulkner, wants Elise to fight one more time. The daughter of a coven member has been possessed, and Elise is the only exorcist nearby. Becoming a hero again would mean risking discovery by old enemies. But digging into the case reveals that it might already be too late--bodies are disappearing, demons slither through the night, and the cogs of apocalypse are beginning to turn. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead... THE DARKEST GATE When Elise Kavanagh retired from demon hunting, she swore it would be permanent. But an attack from a powerful necromancer forced her back into the business, and now she's trying to balance her normal boyfriend and normal job with everything supernatural. Mr. Black is a demon hunter gone rogue. He's enslaving angels and stealing ethereal artifacts in pursuit of forbidden immortality, and an old grudge drives him to make his final stand in Elise's territory. Destroying her life and killing her friends isn't the goal, but it's a definite perk. A demonic overlord offers to join against Mr. Black and protect Elise's loved ones. All she needs to do is ally with the demons she's sworn to kill, at the cost of her morals--and maybe her immortal soul. But once she crosses that line, there's no turning back. Nothing is sacred when Heaven and Hell collide on Earth... DARK UNION Every fifty years, the most powerful ethereal and infernal beings convene on Earth to resolve conflicts with mediation by kopides--humans born to police relations between Heaven and Hell. They're meeting in Elise Kavanagh's territory this year, and she used to be the greatest kopis in the world. But she's not invited. An old friend, Lucas McIntyre, asks her to attend the summit in his place. But when she arrives, she discovers that a human faction called The Union has taken charge of the summit, and they're not playing nice. Worse yet, someone has killed a prominent Union member... and now they're demanding blood.

I read the reviews to this three book collection before I decided on getting them. After seeing some of the reviews I almost left this book (well all three) behind and moved on to look at something else. Despite my hesitation I decided to go ahead and get it, why not its free right?

Well it surprised me. I found myself flying through the pages and enjoying the story much more than I thought I would. Many people complain about the jumping back and forth between the present and the past, but I had didn't have that problem. The time jumps are clearly stated and happen only with a new chapter, it's not like it just changes all of a sudden. I would have been disappointed if I didn't get the glimpses from Elise's past. The past explains the present, both are important and in my opinion the jumps are well done.

The romance that simmers in the air is fun and complicated, which is exactly what it should be in a story such as this. I love how the romance is down played and the action never seems to stop. The past gives you just enough information to enjoy the present, but leaves you guessing and interested in what will happen next.

I will be continuing this series, and hope to dabble with some of the other stories that this author has written.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Descent Series - Book 1-3 - by SM Reine 17 décembre 2016

This is a dark series of demons, fiends, witches, Angels, humans and a Godslayer. Elise and James are the main characters, she is a kopis and he is her aspis. The stories revolve around Elise and James fighting demon procession of a human child and then on to trying to keep the gates to Heaven and Hell from falling into the wrong hands. This a great story with all kinds of nasty, gross, disgusting creatures and demons. I only have one negative thought and that is Elise isn't a female hero to me. She has suffered much, but her attitude toward those who she should care about is severely lacking though out the series. Only when death takes away one special person does she barely show any remorse. Otherwise I really enjoyed the series and want to continue reading future installments. Kathy Barber Doyle - 12/17/2016

These books are just simply OK.

Book 2: I'm not sure what makes me unable to decide whether or not I like these books. I like the theme, the angels which are not exactly the benevolent guardians we think, the demons who enslave angels. I think my problem is with the main character. She is simply irritating. She is supposed to be tough and the best in her field, but she just makes stupid and illogical decisions, and almost dies in every fight. And, she is a bitch (not in that charming, funny way say, Dr. House is, she's just a mean bitch), and she has this tomboy image which is thoroughly ruined when she acts like a jealous idiot. I simply cannot relate to her.
Still, I can't give them up. There's just something that makes me read on, and not want to make me put down my Kindle. It's a strange love/hate-relationship between Elise and me.

Book 3: Elise get more irritating by the page. I had no connection to her whatsoever. In addition, this book was... well... I don't really know. I didn't really see the point of it. It didn't seem like a whole book, it seemed like the beginning (a very slow one, but still) of a book.
All the characters were frustrating, none of them seemed plausible.
It's really quite difficult to write a review of this book, it just seemed to lack a bit of everything that makes a book good. It was simply "meh".
And the grammatical errors (in all three books) didn't help one bit.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Heavy-handed and disturbing 20 décembre 2014

This ebook is three books combined, a whole trilogy. I read the whole first book, and about half of the second book, before putting the trilogy aside. There's certainly a lot of action, and other than typos and a few grammar errors it's decently written, although the author could vary sentence types more to create more interest. There's an extremely strong female lead; plenty of mystery, intrigue, and challenge for the characters; the mystical aspects are well constructed; and the story doesn't drag.

Why did I set it aside? Honestly, I'm not sure, but when I started to think "oh yeah, I'm still reading *that* book; well, better finish it" I knew I was nearing the end of my interest. I never felt like I connected intimately with the main character, even though I adore strong female leads. I also found the writing to be a bit over-written: as though the author was making every effort to use the most dramatic and impactful words possible. There was a lot of exploding, crashing, bursting, shattering, etc. used to describe most sensations and actions, as though the author really wanted to describe how extreme all the activity and feelings were. After a while, it got to feeling like the author was repeatedly hitting me over the head with the word choices and commanding "this is dramatic! This is thrilling! This is outrageous! Be worked up about it!" When most things are written at the same pitch, they lose the impact and become annoying.

I also got the feeling that the author wanted to create a dark, twisted, disturbing world. During one scene near the end of the first book the author accomplished that for me. I won't spoil it, but the scene was so disturbing it made me nauseated, and I don't think that's ever happened for me with a book before. Making a dark and disturbing book is fine, and I have read such books before. Even doing it so well as to nauseate the reader is something of an accomplishment. If the forced dramatic writing style hadn't been so heavy handed, and if I'd liked the main character, I might have finished the series. As it is, I'll leave it for others to whom this style is more favored.

The beginning of the series is a little hard to follow because it goes back and forth between the past and present. Once you get used to the flow of the author and her style he story becomes really easy to follow. It is well written and fun to read. The characters are a lot of fun. I can't chose which is my favorite. This story is about a Demon Hunter/Exorcist and her Witch/Warlock partner in crime. Their relationship gets to be muddled but by the end you know where they stand. This book isn't in any way scary to read. There is violence. This is a book about Heaven vs Hell. Good vs Evil. In the end who will win. I still don't know. I have to get the rest of the series! Definitely worth picking up a copy! Enjoy!
