I purchased this model to replace my EX-Z600, which I bought new in 2006 (the battery occasionally loses charge after all these years, and the contacts are not great anymore, but the batteries Casio uses are unmatched. I literally charged my old camera about 14 times in all those years). The 500 is a bit larger than my old camera, but seems equally sturdy and has the same tough screen cover. As of yet, I am unable to find a protective case for this new camera, there are few options for a larger digital camera (4.1" (W) x 2.3" (H) x 1.1" (D).

Two things that aren't ideal, one is the dial for choosing picture mode, which also calls for going into the menu to further narrow down the options; I may learn to like it more, once I've used it for a while. The second thing I don't like as much is the lack of filters, I liked a red filter for certain scenes. For all I know, the 'Sunset' option in the Best Shot menu is the red filter option.

Overall, I have been enjoying this camera very much, the 12.5X zoom is just a delight, paired with my tripod I have amazing results. The macro works very well for photographing jewelry I've created in full detail. I have also been experimenting with the Best Shot menu and different effects than my old camera had, and my favorite sepia is still an option. Low-light situations are much improved over the old model. I am a fan of Casio cameras, the prices are decent and the quality is great.

I ordered this camera directly from J-Made in Japan, received my box in the mail in about six days while the Amazon estimated delivery date was two months out. Bravo, J-Made, for expediting my shipment and knowing how difficult it is to wait! The menu and printed manual were both in Japanese, it was easy to scroll the main menu on the screen to 'Language' and change it to English. I got the .pdf manual in English from support.casio.com.

I knew before I ordered this camera it's a Japanese import...but who would have thought it was made in China? Thankfully, when I set it up straight out of the box, the English language was the default. Being an import camera, the manual that came in the box is Japanese, but you can download the English version at Casio's web site.

This is my 3rd Casio camera and the most expensive one yet - the others being an EX-Z16 budget camera and the better quality EX-H5 which I loved but it was stolen unfortunately...these two models were new around 4-5 years ago. Both these Casio models took better photos than the ZR500. Mind you, not as quick, but better quality, brighter colors and less noise.

The ZR500 is fast at capturing, fast at recycling to take another photo, etc., and I love the Time Lapse feature that is usually found on much more expensive cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix LX7. But even when set to Premium Auto Pro, the photo quality isn't any better than the cheaper models. The Best Shot setting is basically the Scene Setting on other brand cameras, and you have to press "set" just to choose the menu and "set" again once you've chosen the scene you want.

Outdoor shots are OK, but outdoor shots on any camera are good, even the under $100 cameras. Macro shots with this Casio are absolutely horrible, grainy, noisy and flat/dull...so bad that tweaking them with photo software doesn't help.

The camera body is plastic, the battery door is flimsier than most, and the SDHC card is hard to get in/out unless you have long nails. There is a small plastic grip on the front right, but nothing on the back.

Video quality is nothing spectacular. My personal opinion is any of the newer Sony cameras, even the budget models, take better video than this camera.

On the plus side, battery life is excellent; other than the initial charge, I have taken 200 shots and a few movies and the battery indicator is still on full. The battery is charged inside the camera on this model.

I've used this camera for about a week, very carefully. The zoom motor noise sounds a little unstable at times, so I plan on returning this camera. Sorry, Casio, this camera doesn't cut it for me.
