Vibrant, colorful images that bring the story to life on your tablet and computer

Donuts is a fairy tale with a modern day appeal. Meet Merl, a plucky, young squirrel who makes his home in a vast wilderness where all the trees have been cut to the ground. When Merl finds the very last acorn, he makes an extraordinary wish, resulting in one final oak tree sprouting. However, Merl’s wish is far from granted when the tree’s sprawling branches fail to bloom one single nut. A visit to a park turns Merl’s world upside down and his tree will never be the same. This is a majestic and poignant tale that exemplifies the beauty of loyalty in the friendship that grows between a squirrel and his tree. Donuts will touch the hearts of readers and make the most ardent cynic, smile. Stunning illustrations and melodic rhyming text make this enchanting adventure a memorable read.

"Donuts" by Julia Dweck, and spectacularly illustrated by Adam Duff, is an absurdly cute and colorful story about a bunch of squirrels who are forced to relocate after somebody cut down all their trees. However, there was one little squirrel, by the name of Merl, who stayed behind. Merl the squirrel searched for acorns every day, until one day he found one lying in the grass. Instead of eating it or storing it for winter, he used it to make a wish. He closed his eyes, held the acorn tight, and wished for a tree. When he opened his eyes, lo and behold! There was an oak tree! It was a tall, healthy looking oak tree, but didn't have a nut to its name. Still, it was Merl's tree, so he watered it and shined its leaves, and spent a lot of time just swinging on its branches, or running from limb to limb. But Merl still needed something to eat, so he went to a local park where humans sometimes fed the squirrels. He saw a man on a bench, with a paper bag in his lap, so he ran over to the man, hoping for a few crumbs. But the man didn't have any nuts, just a donut, which he gave Merl.

This tale continues through a few seasonal changes, and crowds of onlookers. The story really has no purpose other than to entertain children, and the artful illustrations certainly help in that regard. It is a cute story, and ideally suited for preschool aged children. I recommend this for kids up to perhaps first or second grade, at which time they should be reading it to themselves. They will appreciate the tale for its accompanying illustrations, which virtually tell the story themselves.

Merl is a squirrel who is forced to live alone because all the trees where he lived had been cut to the ground. He searches everywhere for a nut to eat. One day he finds an acorn and wishes for a tree to grow. An oak tree sprouts but it has no leaves or nuts. Still Merl protects his tree and waters it every day. One day Merl goes off to search a park for food and meets a man on a bench eating his lunch. He has no nuts but gives Merl a donut with lemon on top. Merl eats the donut and lo and behold tree sprouts branches and leaves with donuts on the top of the tree! Tourists come from everywhere to see it. Merl gets tired of all the visitors and begins to cry. The branches dry up and wither away. What will happen to the tree and will Merl be forced to leave the forest?

This book is written in rhyme. The illustrations by Adam Duff are some of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. Though some of the events in the story line are a bit far fetched, the story lessons are good ones. Older preschoolers and primary grade children will love this book.

There is no doubt, this is my favorite kid's book of the year. How can you not love this book? These are the best illustrations I have ever seen for Kindle. You actually forget you aren't holding a "real book" when you read this. The story is adorable and has a good message as well. My kids loved this so much that we are on our fifth reading already and I expect this has now become their overall favorite. I certainly recommend this book to anyone with children...maybe even if you don't have children, it is just so sweet!

Donuts! Did that grab your attention? One of our favorite breakfast delicacies is the focus of Julia Dweck’s book.
Merl, the last of the squirrels, lives alone in a land devoid of trees. All the trees have been chopped down. Luckily, he makes a magical wish on a lone acorn & delights when a tree grows. But, Merl’s tree has no fruit or nuts on it. After a visit to the park, Merl is given a donut by a friendly man. Not exactly the kind of nut you’d think a squirrel would want, is it?
However, Merl discovers what I’ve known for decades- donuts are awesome! When crumbs fall all around, the tree begins to bloom. Like no oak tree before it, it grows donuts. When word spreads to other animals, Merl’s desolate world becomes over packed with visitors. Can Merl balance his new found food with the overpopulation around him?
Filled with fantastic art provided by Adam Duff, Julia Dweck provides us with the wholesome entertainment we’ve come to expect from her. She has an unbelievable talent to capture our hearts & minds through her writing. My kids adore her work & yours will too. In each story, she provides a strong lead character, like Merl, who has a will to survive, never gives up, & has a solid moral compass. I recommend her work highly.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
